TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) Specs Worn By Umpire For KC Mix Kansas City, Mo. U.R) A history-making event for major league baseball was recorded yesterday in the Kansas City Detroit game, but Umpire Frank Umont, who achieved it, would not comment on it. Through the years one favor ite chant of disgruntled fans has been "Umpire, you're half blind. You need glasses." Umont wore specs in the game. It was the first time a major league umpire has appear ed in a game in sDectacles. After the game, sports writ ers went to the umpire room in the municipal stadium to ques tion Umont. but he wouldn't talk about his new eyeglasses. Nothing To It He referred the newsmen to Charley Berry, a fellow umpire, who remarked: 'There's nothing to it, really. Frank has a slight defect in his left eye and his doctor told him to wear glasses, which will cor rect it. He can see as well as anybody." Umont, a 37-year-old husky six-footer who played pro foot- ball with the New York Giants for several seasons, has been an American league umpire since the 1954 season. Formerly, he was an umpire in the American asociation and Piedmont and Caroline leagues. Pete Proctor socked a homer with one man on base in the first inning and Allen Drews also got a roundtripper in the frame. Chuck Nevi hit for the circuit in the fourth inning with two men on base. The Cavemen got five of their runs in the opening stanza. There were two walks and Nevi, Butch McFarland - and Tibbetts got hits along with the homers. Proctor had three hits in four times up yesterday, Drews and Tibbetts got two for three, Walt McCurdy two for two and Nevi two for four. Frank Thomas and Larry Cochell combined for a one-hitter for GP. Thomas yielded a single to Allen Gosnell. Gold Hill scored over Sams Valley .by a 80Vi to 3 score in the A division and the B squad won by a 50 2-3 to 29 1-3 count. A new record was set when Terry Cooper threw the baseball 282 feet 4 inches. The victors won firsts in all events in Class A with Cooper a triple winner and Eldred, Turner and Jones taking two events each. EACH LOW DOWN PAYMENT LOW MONTHLY PAYMENTS Conditions Look Good For Opening of Trout Season on Week End Barring a change in weather this week, conditions of water, roads and weather look good for the opening of trout season Sat urday, Cole Rivers, Grants Pass, field agent for the Oregon Game Commission has reported. In general, there is more wat er in the streams than normal for the opening of the season, but in spite of snow run-off, the streams are not roily. Rivers said. Waters are colder than normal which means that best catches will be made with the use of small spinners, worms, single eggs or combinations thereof. The old angle-worm will probably produce the best catches. The main Rogue is slightly high for good angling, the agent stated, but water temperatures are improving to possibly afford some good catches. Water col or is good providing logging op erations do not muddy up the river before the weekend. Bait is recommended but possibly a few catches can be made in the evening with the use of brown or black hackle flies. Applegate Excellent Fly fishing in the upper sec tions of the Rogue will be poor according to Rivers. Regardless of the bait or lure that is used in the north fork of the Rogue, catches will be poor. Rivers reported Applegate river in excellent shape above the mouth of Little Applegate river. Intermittent silt loads from the Little Applegate have been muddying the main Apple gate below Ruch. Loggers on So.uaw Creek are causing some mud, but the silt load to the main river has not been too ex cessive for angling. Carberry creek and its forks Took very good, the game man said. Sucker creek in the Illinois valley is in excellent shape, but the water is very cold and catches will be difficult to make. Little Butte creek is good, particularly the north fork, pro vided logging does not discolor them before the weekend. If continual road maintenance is not provided, passenger cars may have trouble later in the week end. Lloyd Morris, resort owner at Fish lake and Willow creek res ervoir, said the Dead Indian rd. from Ashland to Fish lake was in good condition, and that work is being done by the forest serv ice on the road from Eagle Point through McAllister Springs and from Butte Falls. Both roads, he said, should be in good shape by Saturday. The camp area at Fish lake, he said, was partially cleared of snow. Ice on Fish lake is almost gone, he added. Willow Creek reservoir is in excellent shape, according to Rivers. Good catches are expect ed to be made provided the use of motor boats does not get out of hand. The road is good. Camp facilities are abundant and in good order. No snow remains in or around the lake area. Ice Rotten The Game Commission's new ruling on ice fishing allows for fishing through the ice on lakes that are open to angling. If ice remains on lakes, such as Fish lake, it is -now legal to fish that lake. Anglers should be warned that the ice is always rotten in the spring, and no one should attempt to walk on it. Fishermen should be advised to pick up an angling synopsis at their nearest sporting goods store and become acquainted with the season, area and bag limit. Rogue river regulations (Zone 4) are found on pages 19 and 24 to 26 of the synopsis.
