(U.R; U.S. defenses are being pushed to the limit of outer space at a secret rocket development pro ject in the mountain fastness of California. ; Gigantic rocket engines to power future space ships and intercontinental ballistic mis siles are being tested in the Santa Susana Mountains just 35 miles from Los Angeles. The Air Force and North American Aviation, Inc., cau tiously lifted a part of the veil of secrecy Wednesday on the tests conducted by several thous and scientists and technicians at the largest rocket laboratory in North America. "Modern science and industry are packing enough power into rocket engines to drive missiles from continent to continent and perhaps some day out of the world," the aircraft company said. Proving Into Space In deepest secrecy for six years, the scientists have been conducting experiments that may drive missiles out of the Earth's atmosphere and down on targets thousands of miles away from their launching cities. And some day man-made vehicles may be pushed into space. The testing towers rose to heights of 150 feet and dot three square miles of this isolated mountain and valley retreat. Horrendous noise from the ex periment is trapped in the moun tain bowl, sparing the ears of the people of Los Angeles and denelv populated San Fernan do Valley. Testing installations are be ing prepared by the scientists to test rocket engines that deliver a stupendous 1,000,000 pounds of thrust. In comparison, the most powerful jet engines in the world today deliver 15,000 to Meat Inspectors In Northeast Oregon Salem (U.R) The statewide pilot compulsory meat inspec tion program is now concentrated in Wallowa, Union and Umatilla counties, the State Agriculture Department said today.- Two survey teams are inspect ing 12 plants in this area. Each team remains in the plants for three weeks of contin uous inspection. Animals passing inspection are stamped "Oregon Department of Agriculture in spected and passed." The pilot program was au thorized by the 1955 Legisla ture. Findings of the surveys will not be complete until the Legislature convenes next January. 20,000 pounds of thrust. Small But Powerful And officially it was learned that other scientists are devising engines no bigger than a small sports car which will generate more horsepower than the total output of Hoover Dam. Newsmen, 1200 feet away from one of the gigantic firing towers, saw an engine blast out some 150,000 pounds of thrust, three times that of Germany's World War II V2 rocket. L. L. Waite, North American vice-president, said "the engines are probably the largest in the world. We are not sure what goes on behind" the Iron Cur tain." The tremendous scope of the project is indicated by the 30 to 40 firings of each of the rocket stands per month. Reporters saw at least eight stands, anchored in bed rock. The total number is secret. Extraordinary safety, precau tions rival the security measures taken at the vast project. There has been only one serious in jury, a man lost a hand, in the years since 1950 when the first firing of a unit larger than a V2 took place. Wreck Near Lowell Fatal To Girl, 17 Springfield, Ore. (U.R) A 17-year-oid girl was killed and three other young persons were injured yesterday when a . car failed to negotiate a curve and rolled over near Lowell, about 18 miles southeast of here, state police reported. The victim was Wanda Gain es, who was thrown from the car. Injured and taken to a Eu gene hosital were Ann Bangness, 15, Springfield and two sailors, Harry M. Smith, 18, and Richard Curtis Mangum, 21, whose home addresses were not immediately available State police said they did-not believe the injured were hurt critically. 4-H Club News Upper Rogue Club Upper Rogue 4-H club had a monthly meeting Monday eve ning at the home of Robert Peile. Ambassador James Wadsworth, deputy U. S. representative to the United Nations who led the 12-nation negotiations on the agency, disclosed the President's feelings after a call at the White House. - The United States, Russia, and 10 other nations yesterday ap proved a draft charter for the international agency which Mr. Eisenhower first proposed in his historic atoms for peace address to the United Nations in 1953. Wadsworth predicted that the charter will be ratified by an 84-nation conference which will be held at the U.N. Headquar ters in September. AppointmentsMade For County Drives In State Campaigns Four Jackson county men have been appointed chairmanships of committees supporting political candidates. Robert R. Dickey, Medford attorney, has been named Jack son county chairman of the Mark Hatfield for Secretary of State committee, state chairman William E. Walsh has announced Walsh said that the Hatfield campaign "is meeting with an enthusiastic response through out the state." Invites Contribution! Dickey noted that "it was a group of Jackson county resi dents who first actively urged Mark Hatfield to announce for this office early last fall." He invited contributions for the campaign. Robert Root, Medford, has been named Jackson county chairman of the Elmo Smith for Governor committee, R. A, Rawlinson, Salem .state chair man, announced. Root said he will announce names of members of the county committee soon. Rawlison said the committee expected to conduct a vigorous statewide drive to keep.. Elmo Smith as governor.
