Old Songs If people must sing the old popular songs, why do they in evitably render such numbers as "Sweet Rosie O'Grady," "Side walks of New York," "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" and "Just Because She Made Them Goo Goo Eyes?" Why not sing some of the really good songs of that period such as "Dearie,", "Caro lina in the Morning," "Love Me and the World Is Mine?" Or Two Little Love Bees," "Just A-Wearyin' for You," "Can't You Hear Me Callin' Caroline" and There's a Little Spark of Love Still Burning." Was originally called Series of Mishaps In Oregon Fatal To Five Persons By UNITED PRESS Five persons met death in Oregon in a series of mishaps from Monday night until early today. Three died in auto crash es. An airman identified as Phile mon Brown, 23, was killed near Portland early today when a car smashed into a power pole. His companion, Donald Rhine, 23, was injured seriously. Both were stationed at Portland air base. Collision Fatal Mrs. Mary Garner, 30, North Bend, was killed yesterday after noon when the car in which she was riding collided with a load ed heating oil truck near Junc tion City. Her husband, Dewey, was hospitalized in Eugene with serious injuries and their five-year-old son Darrell, also was hospitalized. William J. Evitt, about 30, of O'Brien, was killed yesterday when his pickup truck went out of control on a sharp curve near Cave Junction and crashed into a drainage ditch. A passenger, Annis Dixon of Kerby, was not seriously hurt. Struck by Train George Gilbert, 76, was killed at Albany when struck by a freight train near the eastern city limits. Allan Whitmore, 31, night watchman at a lumber company about 30 miles west of Corvallis, apparently was killed when he fell about eight feet Monday night at the mill. His body was found by a friend who had stop ped to talk. EDITOR DIES New York (U.R) Shelly Pierce, 57, financial editor of the Journal of Commerce and a native of Oregon, died yesterday in San Juan, P.R., as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage suffered while vacationing, it was an nounced here. J-1971 By PETER WEBB United Press Correspondent Cairo (U.R) At first Cairo from the air looked like a clust er of jewels shimmering and sparkling on black velvet. Then suddenly the city was plunged into darkness as though some one had thrown a giant switch. Down below all traffic stop ped. Police whistles blew, voices screamed at lighted windows and army dispatch riders with mask ed headlamps on their cars roar ed past long lines of halted traffic. It was just a practice air raid alert, one of those occurring with increasing frequency as tension rises along tlie Israel Eygptian border. But it pointed a moral to those who remem bered the 1948-49 Arab-Jewish war. Then, Israeli B-17 bombers droning in from airfields out side of Tel Aviv were over Cairo. Less Obvious Tension But apart from air raid alerts and war films glorifying Egypt's new arm there is far less obvious tension here than in Israel. Reports here say Egyptian commandos spread "panic" among Israeli farmers in border settlements and have caused heavy damage and casualties. Egyptian authorities have refus ed to allow foreign newsmen to visit the scene of the Gaza clash es on the grounds "we cannot guarantee their safety." The Israelis have claimed that three EgyptiaVi brigades are con centrated on the Gaza Strip in violation of the armistice. The visit of United States Secretary General Dag Hamarskjold has temporarily lessened the likeli hood of any immediate outbreak of hostilities, but there is little prospect his mission will have any lasting results. Both sides have shown, little respect for United Nations structures and resolutions in the past. All-out Soviet Drive Meanwhile, with the Western Powers divided among them selves over basic policy, the Soviets are launching an all out drive to destroy Western in fluence in the Middle East.
