Orchestra to Give Concert At School Auditorium Today Richard D. Werner will con duct the Philharmonic Society of Southern Oregon in the final concert of the season this after noon at three o'clock in Medford Senior High school auditorium. Mrs. DeVoss will sing two groups of songs, one with or chestral accompaniment and the other with pianC accompaniment by Bruno Pellegrini. The ochestra's principal num ber will be Schubert's "Sym phony No. 8 in B Minor" known as the "Unfinished Symphony." Also on the program are num bers by Mozart, Verdi and Biz et. Before coming to Medford Mr. Werner played as a first violin ist with numerous famous or chestras in New York, including the New York Symphony, under Walter Damrosch; the Russian Symphony under Modest Alt schuler; the North Shore Sym phony of Long Island under Con ductor Cesare Sodero, once con ductor of the Metropolitan Op era house, and the Ormandy or chestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy. Mr. Werner has also composed extensively in various musical forms including the symphony, chamber music, opera and song. Mr. Pellegrini has worked as a colleague of Mr. Werner j since 1945, serving as official ac ! companist and now as assistant conductor of the Philharmonic I society. i Mr. Pellegrini studied piano in Trieste, Italy. His interest in music grew through playing in the opera houses in Italy, where he eventually became a coach for vocal work.- Later in New York he appear ed as pianist with an orchestra over radio station WOR, of the Mutual chain, and filled numer ous engagements as pianist with ensemble groups and as accom panist. At the same time he served exclusively as In operat ic chorus coach. Immediately following the concert, an orchestra supper party will be held in the Senior High school cafeteria for the mu sicians, the Society Guild mem bers and their husbands. Special guests for the concert and for the party will be Dr. Lu igi Rebuzzini, Italian educator from Milan, Italy, and his inter preter, Leon Segal. Elected Eugene Miss Regina Hannon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Hannon, 705 West Tenth street, was elected second vice-president of Pi Sigma Alpha, politi cal science honorary on the Uni versity of Oregon campus, at a meeting of the group held re cently. Davis has been named Woman of the Year for 1956 by Medford Zonta club for her service Jo Girl Scouts, Firs Presby terian church and the Medford Crusade. Mrs. Davis is seen (at right) received her award from Mrs. Irean Grigsby, club member. . (Srainerd photo) Mrs. Scott Davis Receives Annual Award' of Zonta Club Medford Zonta club's 11th "Woman of the Year" is Mrs. Scott V. Davis. Mrs. Davis, given the award because of her work with the Girl Scouts in Medford and southern Oregon, with First Pres byterian church and the Medford Crusade, was honored at a ban quet given by the women's service club at Mon Desir inn Thursday night. She was presented a scroll and an arm bouquet of roses by Mrs. Irean Grigsby, Zonta mem ber. Mrs. Davis has been a Girl Scout adult volunteer for 17 years. She has been a commit tee member, a finance chairman, and is a former commissioner for Region XI. She served as Medford staff and office chair man in 1947, worked in 1948 and '49 to promote the new Camp Low Echo at Lake o Woods from 1949 to 1952 was regional committee member rep resenting southern and eastern Oregon. For 1952-53 Mrs. Davis was second vice-president for the area, and from 1953 to 1956 was area staff and office chair man. During this latter period Mrs. Davis is credited with an "out standing job" in a troublesome period and during that time she personally promoted and super vised renovations and additions for the area Girl Scout head quarters in Medford. The new Woman of the Year has just completed a three-year term as trustee for First Presby terian church and during that time served as trustee on the house committee of the church. She is now on the church's com mittee for new church develop ment. Mrs. Davis was co-chairman for the United Medford Crusade last year and received an award for her outstanding efforts. Miss Vera Humphey, now of Eugene, was the club's first Woman of the Year, receiving her award for Junior Red Cross work. Mrs. A. Orin Schenck was the second, her award hav ing been based on her work as production chairman of Jackson county chapter, American Red Cross. Mrs. George B. Canode re ceived the award for her work "above the call of duty" as an elementary teacher and Mrs. G. Q. D'Albini was the award win ner one year, having been honor ed for many years of service in structing immigrants in citizen ship classes. Mrs. Justin B. Smith received the award for her work with American Association of Uni versity Women and League of Women Voters as an authority on international relations, and Mrs. Clarence Meeker, now na tional editor of Methodist Wom en, received the award for the field of Christian education. The late Mrs. John Gribble was Woman of the Year because of her years of service in mak ing Braille books for the blind, and Miss Hazel Swayne, Med ford nurse, received the award in recognition of her service to crippled children and on the Medford Safety council. Mrs. Henry Padgham receiv- ed the award two years ago in recognition of her public health activities and last year the award went to Mrs. B. Brandt Bartels, organizer and director of Junior Service league's kin- dergarten for deaf children. Sev eral of these women were pre- sent and were given corsages and introduced. Mrs. Margaret Fabrick, char ter member and first president of Medford Zonta club, was in troduced. Mrs. Ethel Tennant served as toastmistress and Mrs Effie Kurtz, president, closed the meeting. Decorations and appointments were in the club's colors. Shower Given for Two Brides-Elect A bridal shower was given at the home of Mrs. Ina Huson 505 Summit street, Friday, April 6 which honored Mrs. Huson's two granddaughters, Miss Mar garet L. Huson, and Miss Laura M. Huson, who are both to be married this summer. They are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Dar- rel F. Huson, 45 Lindley avenue. miss Margaret L,. riuson is engaged to wed Kenneth Brown of Medford, and Miss Laura M. Huson is the fiancee of Doug Wall, Seattle, Wash. The evening was spent play- ing games and the brides-elect were presented gifts. They re ceived the gifts at long table decorated with an umbrella cen terpiece and daffodils. White wedding bells were arranged above the table. Guests included their mother and Mrs. Orrin Brown, Mrs. J, A. Phillips, Mrs. Fred Phillips, Mrs. Charles Clemens, Mrs. Rich ard Phillips, Miss Darelyn Hu son, who presented her sisters each a bride's book; Mrs. R. Bohnert, Seven Oaks farm, Central Point, announce the engagement of their daugh ter, Miss Marilyn Bohnert, to James F. Rjce, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Rice, Myrtle Creek. Miss Bohnert, who is a grad uate of Crater high school, is a senior at Oregon State college. She is a resident of Azalea house and is a member of Mu Beta Beta and Delta Sigma Rho, na tional honorary societies. Her fiance is a graduate of Myrtle Creek high school and is also a senior at Oregon State college. He is a past president of Theta Chi fraternity. Miss Bohnert is to return Monday to Corvallis after being in Chicago, 111., for a week as a delegate, to a national meeting of Delta Sigma Rho society, which is an honorary forensics society for outstanding speech students. She was selected at Oregon State college as one of two outstanding delegates to the session, which observed the 50th anniversary of the founding of the society. Corporal Weds Tennessee Girl News of interest here is the wedding March 3 of Miss Dorris Ellen Moore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. V. Moore, Spring field, Tenn., and Cpl. Douglas V. Peters, son of Mrs. Maxine Vincent, 326 Benson street. The ceremony was read at Spring field by the Rev. K. B. Slifer of the Nazarene church. Corporal Peters in the mean time has been transferred to Germany with the 11th airborne division in operation gyroscope which is replacing the fifth in fantry division in Europe. The bride plans to join him in mid summer. At the time of the wedding Corporal Peters was a typist clerk in Company M of the di vision, stationed at Ft. Camp bell. Ky.
