TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, April 13. 1958 PorfJanders Divide Sacramento Tangles By DON THACKREY Uniled Press Sports Writer Pacific Coast League teams completed their first rain-splat tered series of the 1956 season last night all bunched up like a pile of wet wash. The weatherman took two more decisions yesterday and all eight teams prepared for the mid-week partner-swinging with near-identical records. Vancouver got into the win column via a one-hit 3-1 victory for Bob Harrison over San Fran cisco and Portland split with Sacramento, winning 6-1 in the daylight and losing 6-5 under the lights. Los Angeles at San Diego and Seattle at Hollywood went down the drain as the rains came to the southland. Today the teams shuffle about a bit with Vancouver going to Los Angeles, Seattle to Sacra mento,. Hollywood to San Diego and Portland to San Francisco Close Pack After the first whirl Portland and Los Angeles topped the loop with 2-1 records while San Diego and Sacramento sat in seventh and eighth with 1-2 marks Everybody else was even at 1-1. Easily the best game of the season was turned in yesterday afternoon when Harrison, a 25- year-!ld strikeout artist from Wichita of the Western Associa tion, limited San Francisco to a single. Harrison was wild in the early innings and deprived himself of a shutout by issuing three walks after giving up his only hit a single by Don Lenhardt in the fourth frame. The walk that forced in San Francisco's run was the eighth Harrison gave up in four frames and the last of the game as he cut the Seals down the rest of the way. Rightfielder Angelo Dagres MedfordJTrebune provided all the necessary punch for the Mounties' initial win when he singled with the bases loaded for two Vancouver runs in the third. Dick Young of Portland hom ered as the first man up in the first game of an afternoon-night doubleheader with Sacramento and the Beavers were never be hind. Three errors by Sac shortstop Tom Agosta contributed to the Portland scoring and the Solons RVCC Golfers To Play Webfoots; Qualifying Headed By Millette Harry Millette with his tabu lation of 75-71 146 headed the list of Rogue Valley Golfers who qualified for team action this week end with the University of Oregon varsity. (U.R) Top-seeded Vic Seixas meets Davis Cup Captain Billy Talbert today in a make-up first round match in the 10th annual Dallas Country Club Invitational tennis tourna ment. Seixas of Philadelphia, who didn't get to Dallas in time for Thursday's opening round, is ex pected to catch up with the rest of the field. The winner of the Seixas-Talbert match meets Tom Brown of Los Angeles in a second round match. were unable to make more than a single run despite 10 hits off Rene Valdes, the winner, and veteran Royce Lint. The second contest was a see saw affair, marred by seven errors, three by Sacramento and four by Portland. Sacramento got off to a lead, lost it in the top of the eighth and then came from behind with two runs in the bottom of the same frame to win. Veteran Jackie Tobin singled home the winning run. Bob Borkowski was Portland's hitting hero, collecting three singles good for four of the five Beaver runs. S. team which will defend the Wightman Cup against a British tennis team at Wimbledon, England, June 15 16. Miss Brough, former U. S. champion, was appointed cap tain of the squad. The American girls team has won the cup 24 times in 28 meetings with Britain, the last 19 in a row to turn the series into one of the most lopsided in ternational competitions in his tory. Sam Snead Leader at Greensboro Greensboro, N. C. (U.R) Creeking old Sam , Snead, who won the first Greensboro Open back in 1938 and enough others in between to stake his claim here, was the familiar figure in front of the field this Friday the 13th. Time may be slipping on the balding, eagle-eyed West Virgin ian but he played Thursday's first round with the bravado of a pirate. Snead, the defending champion, faced the challenge of a four-under par 67 posted by early-starting Frank Stranahan of Toledo and met it with three birdies on the last five holes for a 66. Stranahan had trouble find ing the green on the front nine, partly because of a morning wind. He made up for it with a blazing putter, having 13 one putt greens. He posted -a 32 coming in four strokes off par. Six Others Right back of the leaders go ing into the second round were six other challengers who bested par Thursday and were within either two or four strokes. Jimmy Clark of Los Angeles put 34s back to back for a 68. Young Bill Casper of Chula Vista, Calif., who played in the Navy with Gene Littler and Bud Holscher, sneaked in late in the day with a steady 68. Bunched at 70 were a former champion, Doug Ford of Ma hapac, N. Y.. Al Besselink of Grossinger, N. Y., John Serafin of West Pittston, Pa., and ama teur Wayne Jackson of Warwick, Va. GP Takes 2 Meet Wins Grants Pass Grants Pass ninth graders overpowered Mc Loughlin of Medford and Crater of Central Point in a track meet here yesterday. In other action McLoughlin crushed Grants Pass in an eighth grade session and GP won oui over the Bulldogs in seventh grade rivalry. In the Ninth grade ruckus GP ran up 101V4 points. McLough lin got 31 and Crater 5V4. The Cavekids won all contests except the 660 which was captured by Bill Turner, McLoughlin. The Bulldog eighth was victor in eight of the 12 events in a 67 to 46 verdict over GP. In the seventh grade meet Grants Pass scored 46 to McLoughlin's 40 and walked off with firsts in six of the 10 events. For Best Results!
