PorfJanders Divide Sacramento Tangles
By DON THACKREY
Uniled Press Sports Writer
Pacific Coast League teams
completed their first rain-splat
tered series of the 1956 season
last night all bunched up like a
pile of wet wash.
The weatherman took two
more decisions yesterday and
all eight teams prepared for the
mid-week partner-swinging with
near-identical records.
Vancouver got into the win
column via a one-hit 3-1 victory
for Bob Harrison over San Fran
cisco and Portland split with
Sacramento, winning 6-1 in the
daylight and losing 6-5 under
the lights.
Los Angeles at San Diego and
Seattle at Hollywood went down
the drain as the rains came to
the southland.
Today the teams shuffle about
a bit with Vancouver going to
Los Angeles, Seattle to Sacra
mento,. Hollywood to San Diego
and Portland to San Francisco
Close Pack
After the first whirl Portland
and Los Angeles topped the loop
with 2-1 records while San Diego
and Sacramento sat in seventh
and eighth with 1-2 marks
Everybody else was even at 1-1.
Easily the best game of the
season was turned in yesterday
afternoon when Harrison, a 25-
year-!ld strikeout artist from
Wichita of the Western Associa
tion, limited San Francisco to a
single.
Harrison was wild in the early
innings and deprived himself of
a shutout by issuing three walks
after giving up his only hit a
single by Don Lenhardt in the
fourth frame.
The walk that forced in San
Francisco's run was the eighth
Harrison gave up in four frames
and the last of the game as he
cut the Seals down the rest of the
way.
Rightfielder Angelo Dagres
MedfordJTrebune
provided all the necessary punch
for the Mounties' initial win
when he singled with the bases
loaded for two Vancouver runs
in the third.
Dick Young of Portland hom
ered as the first man up in the
first game of an afternoon-night
doubleheader with Sacramento
and the Beavers were never be

Sam Snead
Leader at
Greensboro
Greensboro, N. C. (U.R)
Creeking old Sam , Snead, who
won the first Greensboro Open
back in 1938 and enough others
in between to stake his claim
here, was the familiar figure in
front of the field this Friday
the 13th.
Time may be slipping on the
balding, eagle-eyed West Virgin
ian but he played Thursday's
first round with the bravado of
a pirate. Snead, the defending
champion, faced the challenge
of a four-under par 67 posted by
early-starting Frank Stranahan
of Toledo and met it with three
birdies on the last five holes
for a 66.
Stranahan had trouble find
ing the green on the front nine,
partly because of a morning
wind. He made up for it with a
blazing putter, having 13 one
putt greens. He posted -a 32
coming in four strokes off par.
Six Others
Right back of the leaders go
ing into the second round were
six other challengers who bested
par Thursday and were within
either two or four strokes.
Jimmy Clark of Los Angeles
put 34s back to back for a 68.
Young Bill Casper of Chula
Vista, Calif., who played in the
Navy with Gene Littler and Bud
Holscher, sneaked in late in the
day with a steady 68.
Bunched at 70 were a former
champion, Doug Ford of Ma
hapac, N. Y.. Al Besselink of
Grossinger, N. Y., John Serafin
of West Pittston, Pa., and ama
teur Wayne Jackson of Warwick,
