Economy ' The female Is generally sup posed to be the economical sex. Yet the cigarette butts they throw away are on the average twice the size of those discarded by men. Measure the butts tossed away by your wife. If they aver age over a half a length of a cig arette, request her to use a cig arette holder and thus be easier on the family budget. Sunday, April 8, 1958 MEDFORD (OWSGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEIf Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) Francis Culbertson is an affable, hand some man but this month he does not win any popular ity prizes with movie and TV stars. Culbert son has t h e f; world's only job of chasing down enter tainers who get behind on Aline Mosby their income tax bill. He's a member of the Internal Revenue Service's motion pic ture and television tax unit, a special group set up because show people have so many head aches with their income taxes. From now until April 15 cele brities, like all other taxpayers, are chewing their pencils over their deductions. Later Culbert son takes over to talk to those ml ) i who are tardy with their pay ments. Orson Welles, Mario Lanza and Errol Flynn are among many stars who have been in hock to Uncle Sam. Cases Pile Up "There are seven of us collec tors and we collect about S4. 000,000 a year in back taxes," Culbertson explained. "Why, right now I alone have 165 cases both of individuals and of film producing companies be hind in their tax. Show people often have difficulties because their withholding tax is often not sufficient to cover the in come tax." Culbertson advises many show business celebrities about deduc tions and other problems. Esther Williams, for example, can claim her swimming pool as a deduc tion bceause she works in it every day. But Bing Crosby and Ralph Edwards can't claim their toupees even if they wear them only to work. "Toupees are ruled as per sonal use," the dignified tax ex pert said. "So is capping teeth. Certain types of clothing used for work are deductible. Also trips to New York to do TV shows." Culbertson has to keep up with show business to check his delinquent cases. He watches television closely in case he sees a delinquent actor working. The tax man will try to attach his pay check. Sometimes he has to pay a star's taxes by selling one of the three Cadillacs in his garage. Recently he sold Chico Marx membership in Hillcrest Coun try Club for back taxes. B. J.
