Space Signals To Be Picked Up Pasadena, Calif. (U.R) "In credible signals" which reach the earth from outer space will be picked up by a "radio tele scope" mounted on Mt. Palomar, Calif., California Institute of Technology scientists said today. Cal Tech scientists said the listening device is a bowl-shaped antenna, 32 feet in diameter, which is so sensitive it can de gtect a moderate power television transmitter at the distance of the sun. John Bolton, former research officer of Australia's Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research organization, will be scientific director of the new project. The office of Naval Re search has donated more than $400,000 to the program. "These signals are of course, natural phenomena and there is neither hope nor fear they are being broadcast," Bolton said. "But what they tell astronomers about the universe is full of meaning." The device, which will be turned on next Tuesday, mainly will be used to record precise measurement of distances with in the solar system.- An estimated 200 languages are spoken in India. His appetite for things finan cial is bullish. To some ob servers, it also is puzzling. But it has put young Ross in a posi tiorv that has made it possible for him to train his sights on TVs top giveaway prize $100, 000. Ross, who lives in Tujunga, Calif., and stands 44-and-three- quarters inches high, is current ly wowing the customers on NBC-TV's "The Big Surprise." He has reached the $20,000 level in the quiz game by plunging through a series of questions on stocks and the stock market. This Saturday, he'll take a crack at $50,000. If his luck and memory hold out, he can double that stake the following week and, presumably, retire at the age of 10. Lennie's knowledge of the Wall Street merry-go-round is overwhelming. The exchange now helps write the TV questions that are fired at him. One financial writer for an eastern newspaper, after shoot ing questions at the youngster for two hours, came out con vinced the boy was a wonder. Brain-Breaker Lennie's last question on "The Big Surprise" was a brain breaker for a child under the pressure of exposure to thou sands of dollars and millions of eyes. He was asked to distinguish between "quotation" and "price," to explain how the yield of a stock is computed, and to give the name of the company listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the longest rec ord for paying dividends and to name five of the 50 firms listed on the exchange who have paid a dividend since 1910. Young Leonard rattled off the long answer with comfortable assurance and threw in a few extra oddments just to round out his reply. He comes by his interests in financial affairs quite naturally. His father, a certified public 'ac countant, invests in the market. "I began getting interested in the market about three years ago," says the 10-year-old with almost dismaying aplomb. "My father talked about the market and it was only natural that I should begin to listen and learn." A Matter of Values At an age when most young sters devote a major share of their intellectual energies to comic books and Pinky Lee, young Ross began making trips to brokerage offices in nearby Pasadena and Los Angeles, just 21 miles from his home. "I enjoyed studying the ticker tape," he explains, "I also began following the newspaper quota tions and reading a few books on the subject. I now counsel my mother in her investments and in a small 'way, I believe I have been successful." However, despite Lennie's ex pertness in money matters, he has no intention of making a career of it. "What I would like to do," says young Lennie with a look of a young owl, "is devote my self to politics. I would like per haps to run for office or enter the diplomatic service. "You see, politics has been quite a hobby of mine for some time. I've been active in the field since. I was seven." Next: How Lennie Ross land ed on TV and what ha plans to do with his money.
