Hurn, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, Holly and First sts., began a series of sermons last Sunday to conclude on Pente cost Sunday, May 20th, on "The Personalities of Pentecost." Last Sunday the sermon was about "Jesus and the Promise of Power." Next Sunday night he will preach on the "Holy Spirit and What Happened at Pente cost." Additional subjects in the series include "But Peter Stand ing Up," "Barnabas, Son of En couragement," "A Lame Man Leaping Up," "Ananias the False Prophet.' 'Answered Prayer Rally Theme Sunday At First Baptist A southern Oregon "Answer ed Prayer" rally in honor of a Baptist missionary who has just returned to the United States from a Chinese Communist pris on will be held Sunday at First Baptist church, at 3 p.m. The missionary, Dr. Lee Love gren, attributes his release to the prayers offered for him dur ing his 4Vi years in a Commun ist prison He was released on September 19, 1955 on his 67th birthday. His wife had been waiting for him for 3V2 years. During her time in Hong Kong, Mrs. Lovegren continued mis sionary work among Chinese re fugees. Her daughter, Mildred, is also a missionary in Hong Kong. Dr. and Mrs. Lovegren re turned to the United States by way of Jordan, where their son, August Lovegren, is a missionary-doctor. During their visit with him, the Arab riots broke out and their lives were imper iled when an angry mob threat ened to burn down the hospital supervised by their son. The mob was finally dissuaded by the young doctor. ' - The Lovegrens went to China as missionaries in 1917. UMC Officials to Attend State Meet Three representatives of the .United Medford Crusade will be In Portland next week for the 13th annual luncheon and meet ing of the Oregon Chest and the following western conference of the United Community Funds and Councils of America. M. M Huggins, newly elected representative to the Oregon Chest board from Jackson coun ty, and Harold B. Cook, execu tive secretary of the United Medford Crusade, will attend luncheon meeting April 10 an.d Cook and UMC President Wil liam Prentice will attend the conference April 11 to 13. Gov. Elmo E. Smith will ad dress the annual meeting at the Multnomah hotel and present a special citation and plaque to Chris Seely, Salem, presi dent of the Oregon Chest in the 1955-56 term. More than 1,000 volunteer leaders of Community Chests, United Funds and social service agencies from the state have been invited. A series of lectures and semi nars on problems of fund work will be held during the confer ence. James Linen, publisher of Time magazine, and presi dent of the United Community Funds and Councils of America, will open the conference. Phoenix Pastor To Begin Series; Topics Announced Phoenix The Rev. Ernest R. Volkman, pastor of Phoenix Presbyterian church, will begin a series of sermons Sunday which will continue each Sun day through the month. Next Sunday's topic will be, "Court ship and Marriage." Topics which will be given on the remaining Sundays are "Christian Friendship," April 8; "Christian Courtship," April 15: "Christian Marriage," April 22; and "Christian Family Life," April 29 Young people of the church now are editing a church news paper, entitled "The Presbyter ian Messenger." The first edition was distributed last .Sunday morning. Spring Sessions To Open on Sunday At First Methodist The spring session of the First Methodist "School of Christian Living" will open on Sunday, April 8 at 6 p.m., with interest groups for 'all ages.
