I SAUSAGE BllN0 ?D, RIVER RESCUE Marine patrolman rescues an uncon scious man from the Charles River in Boston, Mass., after the latter had plunged from the West Boston Bridge, an apparent suicide. The 250-pound man was rushed to a hospital where he was reported in fair condition. A Nkhol's Worth of . . . Comment On This and That By HARMAN W. NICHOLS United Press Feature Writer Washington (U.R) It's open season on the tax collector, so another piece about the Internal Revenue Serv ice . seems in order. It seems some newspa pers can be pretty mean. The revenue folks, though, take it in stride and Harman Nichols even brag about their press clippings. ' Not long back there was a no tice of a new Internal Revenue Service building being planned for a large city in the South. One of the biggest papers there around commented: "We shall come to know this as the house our jack built." The guy who put finger to key and wrote those lines apparently was not aware that he was rat tling off a double pun. The head of the collection division in Washington is a nice guy named Robert L. Jack. In a certain city in the South west, there is a federal office building where the regional com missioner holds forth on the fifth floor. Two floors above is the alcohol and tobacco tax division. Just Them Alcoholics The regional commissioner put his cane to the "up" button and got into the lift after hours. He asked the operator: "Everybody gone home, Joe?" "Yes, suh," the man said, "Everybody but them alcohol ics on the seventh floor." This next one, 111 have to re late just as I got it from the tax people. Out in Denver, the IRS and the Chamber of Commerce sponsor ed a series of classes. Personnel of companies there was to be trained in helping colleagues fill out 1955 -forms. But there was a mixup. Some letters explain ing the plan were not stuffed, so a great many business firms received empty official tax en velopes. Phone calls were made and there were cries of "What goes on here?" Infernal Revenue Service The press in Denver was alert. Stories were done and one head line was written: "The guilty flee where no man pursueth. Comedian's Son Faces Narcolics Charges Los Angeles (U.R) Billy Anderson, 28, son of comedian Eddie (Rochester) Anderson, has been indicted by the federal Grand Jury on charges of pos session and sales of marijuana. Young Anderson has a prev ious conviction on a narcotics charge in Kentucky, federal agents said. The Grand Jury re turned the indictment yester day. Anderson was arrested by federal authorities during a huge roundup of narcotics sus pects here over the week end. A federal narcotics agent, Ralph M. Frias, said officers bought two cans of marijuana from the younger Anderson about three weeks ago. Business men just disregard those empty threats." The service just lets it roll off when addressed as "The Infernal Revenue Service" or the Eternal Reveriue Service." An agent in the nearby Balti more office sent out a letter that could qualify the service for an "eternal" label. He had sent a form to a local firm asking in formation about a former em ployee. There were a couple of blanks. One had to do with the year of employment. The other to which the reply should be made. The agent got them mixed up. As sent out, the form said: "The records of this office in dicate that the above named individual was employed by you in the year 1412." The former employer was on his toes. He penciled his reply with a question: "A.D. or B.C.?" Philomath School Destroyed by Fire Philomath, Ore. (U.R) Fire late last night destroyed the Philomath high school building. The blaze broke out about 10:30 p.m. and two hours later only two frame ends of the 35-year-old structure were stand ing. The roof collapsed about an hour after the fire broke out. Loss was estimated at $60,000. Corvallis firemen helped the Philomath fire department in battling the flames. A strong southwest wind and oil-soaked floors of the building combined to hamper efforts to bring the fire under control. Voters here recently approv ed a new S150,000 high school. The old building was remodeled last summer and was to have served next year as a grade school.
