(International) B - congressmen uoservsng Naval Air Techniques Find Place To Sit At Premium By FRANK ELEAZER United Press Correspondent Aboard The Cruiser North ampton (U.R) Congressmen observing new naval air tech niques in the Caribbean suspect they have uncovered a basic fault in naval architecture: No place to sit down. The planes are great. The pilots are hot. The guided mis siles are hotter. But the more than 70 senators and representa . tives who left their seats in Con gress 1100 miles away have to lean, squat, and mostly just stand for hours to see the show. Initially, this was considered merely serious. As the maneuv ers progress, it is coming to be held by unanimous consent a fundamental, oversight in de sign. Ups and Downs There are sofas in the ward room and chairs in the cabins, but you can't see maneuvers from wardrooms and cabins. Be sides riding those "members only" elevators in the Capitol has proved sorry training for the ladders and stairs and compan ionways that must be forever climbed and un-climbed. The run from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on the guided mis sile ship Boston was in most respects a big success. But before the two $30,000 Terrier guided missiles finally blasted a World War II drone Hellcat fighter plane out of the sky, footsore members of Con gress were eyeing possible but unlikely perches on rails, bol lards and gun mounts. Empty beer cases would have sold at high prices just for the place to sit down. v Back on the Northampton, which serves as a floating hotel for the visitors, congressmen rushed to their beds and show ers: That was when the generator burned out. The air condition ing quit. The water petered out. And the lights dimmed and died. Neubergsr Opposes Moving of Negroes Washington (U.R) Sen. Richard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.), disagrees with a proposal by Gov. George Bell Timmerman of South Carolina that the gov ernment transplant southern Negroes to northern states. "American , men and women are free to live in whatever part of the country they prefer or consider their home," Neuberg er said. "It is in the Soviet Un ion, instead of America, that people are shipped about against their will." Timmerman had criticized Neuberger's views on segrega tion as well as suggested the mi gration program for Negroes. Teacher Accused In Elopement With Student New York (U.R) A 34-year-old teacher faces abduction and second degree rape charges to day for eloping with a 17-year-old high school classroom pupil. George Wald, graphic arts in structor at the High School of Industrial Arts, was arrested on the complaint of the girls' par ents after he went to their home, blurted out the secret of their marriage and claimed his bride. Worth Night in Jail "Honey, being with you is worth a night in jail," said Wald when he was arrested. "This is onlv a dream maybe we'll wake up." "I love him and I'll stick with him," said his wife, Sydney Silverman. "If it comes to leav ing my parents, I'll go with him." "He's a man who's been mar ried twice," said Sydney's father, Morris, a dress shop accountant. "I don't think he's the man for my daughter." The bride of two months re vealed that they became engaged on graduation night last August and eloped to Elkton, Md., on Jan. 9. Sydney said she gave her age at 20. The couple parted on the day of their marriage, Sydney going to her parents' apartment and Wald to his furnished room in Coney Island. They lived apart, meeting only on week ends in the afternoons. First Wife Died Wald's first wife, an English war bride, died of polio in Mos cow, Idaho, in 1949. Their two children, Carolyn, 9, and Geoff rey, 7, are living with a married sister"' in Brooklyn. His second marriage in Michigan in 1953 ended in divorce eight months later. Police said the legal contract of Wald's marriage to his former pupil is doubtful as she is under age and could not legally be married without her parents' consent. I'm the culprit. This idea I have had for about a year, but not having a sewing room here as in New York, I have been unable to make it myself. And not until recently have I stood still long enough to have someone else make any thing for me. To get Italy's newest fashion sensation, Robert Capucci, to make up this revolutionary idea of mine I must admit that I first ordered some exquisite evening gowns and cocktail dresses from his own collection. Dress Created Finally all my frustration dis solved when I shanghaied Ca pucci to my apartment and don ned a Japanese dressing gown. Lower food prices offset in creases in other classes of con sumer goods and services. The Bureau of Labor Statis tics reported that its consumer price index in mid-February stood at 114.6 per cent of avear age 1947-49 prices. This was the same as in January and three tenths of one per cent higher than a year ago. Food prices declined slightly for the fifth straight month. I shall be the first Occidental wearing a kimono as a street dress instead of a dress ing gown. I don't mind because I have been a guinea pig for years. Old Story If your memories are long enough you will remember you wore many styles in hair-dos and dresses that I had nerve enough to start back in what I call my "clothes-horse era." If our men folk find this style to their liking, who knows? May be they will adapt their dressing gowns to street wear for win ter, covering long red woolies, and for summer, nothing! Finally and at long last they will be able to discard the things they have always loathed garters, ties, belts and braces, buttons and zippers and waist lines, or the pretense of having one! When science finally unlocked the centuries-old secret of such superb beers as those of Munich and Pflsen, it was established that the quality of the watef used in brewing made the flavorful difference. Another of the world's few sources of water naturally perfect for brewing is at the home of Olympia Brewing Company, near Olympia, Washington.
