performed the rites which were
attended by about 100 guests.
Mrs. Robert Holland, Ophir,
Ore., a sister of the bride was
the honor attendant and brides
maids were Miss Lillian Lewis
and Miss Joan Mete.
The bride, given in marriage
by Robert Holland, a brother-in-law,
wore a satin and lace
gown. The lace bodice was
trimmed with seed pearls and
the skirt was styled with long
train. Her mitts were of lace
and she carried a bouquet of
pink and white (tarnations.
The honor attendant wore a
light green gown and her head
piece was of shirred white sat
in. She carried a vhite shirred
fttin muff with pink, red and
white carnations.
The bridesmaids wore match
ing gowns, Miss Lewis in aqua
blue and Miss Mete in pink.
Their muffs and, carnations
matched the one carried by the
matron of honor.
Miss Barbara Maxson and
Miss June Pike were candle
lighters and their gowns' match
ed those of the bridesmaids,
Miss Pike in pink and Miss Max
son in aqua blue.
Bill Russell was best man and
Harry Sanford, Shady Cove,
and Charles Green," Richmond,
Calif., and a brother of the
bridegroom, seated the guests.
White stock and, greenery
decorated the altar, and Miss
Donna Lou Phnister furnished
the wedding songs, accompanied
by Mrs. Jerry Sherman.
About 75 persons attended
the reception held in the church
rooms which were decorated
with pink candles and fern with
carnations in various shades.
The bride's mother wore a
navy blue dress with 'navy and
white accessories and her cor
sage was of white carnations.

Elects Officers;
Project Praised
Officers for the coming, year
were elected by Medford Altrusa
club at a meeting Thursday-evening
at the home of Mrs. Bereth
Hopkins.
Elected were Miss Grace
Smith, president; Mrs. Anne Fin
ley, vice-president; Miss Lotus
Eaton, corresponding secretary;
Mrs. Jury Stoll, recording sec
retary; Mrs. Virginia Sherwood,
treasurerand Mrs. Francis Grant,
Mrs. Hopkins, and Miss Myrta
Otterdale, directors.
These officers will be installed
at the last meeting of the year
in June 1956.
Miss Smith was elected dele
gate to the 12th district conven
tion to be held at Tacoma. Wash.,
May 11, 12 and 13, with Mrs.
Anne Finley as alternate. A let
ter from Dr. Loretta Miller, dis
trict president, was read by Mrs.
Maude Codding, president of the
club, co.-gratulating the group
on its vocational project. This
was said to be the most outstand
ing work in the district on help
ing older women retrain for
employment. Two national
grants for local women have
been received.
Initiation was conducted by
Mrs. Bertha Haskins, Altrusa in
formation chairman, assisted by
Miss Lotus Eaton, Miss Otterdale
and Mrs. Maisie Daily.
Mrs. Peggy Beebe and Miss
Rae Boyles, who have been ac
tive in the club since fall, re
ceived their Altrusa pins and
corsages.
Mrs. Daily was elected secre
tary pro-tern of the club to take
the place of Mrs. Betty Flannery,
who has moved to Yreka, Calif.
Refreshments were served by
the hastesses, Mrs. Hopkins and
Mrs. Edna Mole.

! Easter Monday
Luncheon to be
Festive Event
Mindful that spring is the time
for high spirits and festive oc
casions, committees for the an
nual Easter Monday luncheon of
St Anne's Altar society are hard
at work to make this a gay event.
It will be held April 2 at Rogue
Valley Country club.
The decorating committee,
headed by Mrs. Raymond Wise,
states that the Oriental theme
will be featured this year. By
way of the grapevine comes the
news that a dish never before
served at the club will be part
of the luncheon menu.
In addition to the general com
mittee, a group of women will
act as hostesses. They are Mrs.
Joe Naumes, Mrs. R. A. Naumes,
Mrs. David Lowery, Mrs. Frank
Roelandt, Mrs. Joseph F. Clark,
Mrs. Harold Colver and Mrs. J.
J. Finnegan.
Mrs. Lowery will take charge
of tickets at the door. Mrs. Os
car Halboth is supervising the
collection of prizes which will
be given after cards. As usual,
bridge, canasta and pinochle will
be played during the afternoon.
Mrs. W. F. Cowning, reserva
tions chairman, states that the
tables are filling fast and urges
all planning to attend to make
reservations as soon as possible.

To Speak
In Contest
Medford Toastmistress finalist
speakers who have been com
peting in an elimination contest
for the past two months will be
the speakers at the Tuesday,
March 27 meeting of Medford
Toastmistress club. The session
will be held at Eaton's Dinner
house and will begin at 6:45 p.m.
The finalists are Mrs. A. C.
Cameron, whose subject will be,
"Churches in Mexico," Mrs.
Arnold Bohnert, who will use as
her subject, "Education Class
versus Mass," and Mrs. Clar
ence Wilson, who will talk on
"Personal Responses."
Winning Toastmistress will
represent Medford at a council
"speak-off" to be held Sunday,
April 8 at Grants Pass.
To preside at the Tuesday
meeting will be Mrs. Edward
Klimko, and Mrs. James Vander
Steen will act as toastmistress.
The topic mistress will be Jrs.
F. W. Dorigan; in charge of the
educational part of the program
will be Mrs. Donald Bergman;
Mrs. Effie Kurtz will be lexi
cologist, and Mrs. Eloise Win
klebleck, program evaluator.
Timekeepers will be Mrs.
Wallace Martin and Mrs. Berg
man, while the judges will be
Dr. Tom Anderson, Doug Roach
and the Rev. J. Thomas Dixon.
The latter will offer the invo

Wife of Former President
To Become Sorority Member
Mrs. Franklin R. Roosevelt
will become an international
honorary member of Beta Sig
ma Phi sorority while she is in
Medford next month, the soror
ity announced Saturday.
Ihe honor will be conferred
upon Mrs. Roosevelt on April 23
during her appearance before
Jackson county Democrats at
the annual Franklin D. Roose
velt Memorial dinner in Hed
rick junior high school.
Because of other obligations,
Mrs. Roosevelt will be unable to
attend the Beta Sigma Phi tradi
tional Founders Day banquet
and ritual on April 30. Consent
to confer this honor on Mrs.
Roosevelt at the memorial din

On Honor Roll at
Pacific University
Miss Janice Stevens, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Stevens,
5020 Pacific Highway and Ron
ald Wolff, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Gottlieb Wolff, 512 North Holly
street, both earned at least a
3.00 grade point average for the
fall semester at Pacific univer
sity, a release from the school
states.
Miss Stevens is a graduate of
Phoenix High school and is a
freshman taking a liberal arts
course .She is a member of
Theta Nu Alpha sorority.
Young Wolff, a sophomore
majoring in optometry, is a
graduate of Medford high
school. He is a member of Phi
Beta Tau fraternity.
Lady Lions Choose
Queen Candidates
Barbara Urie has been selected
by Medford Lady Lions as their
candidate for queen of the an
nual Pear Blossom festival, it
was announced by officers of the
group last week.
Board members met Tuesday
at the home of Mrs. J. A. Tom
jack, 918 Grant street, and final
plans were made for a rummage
sale which the club will hold
this week. Those who have arti
cles to donate for the sale are

Mrs. Roosevelt's installation
will be shared with the organi
zation's 100,000 members

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Martin
Walker arrived in Medford last
Sunday following their wedding
March 10 at Eugene and a wed
ding trip to San Francisco. The
bride is the former Miss Mary Jo
Zawislak, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Zawislak, 1100 Dakota
avenue, Medford, and the bride
groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs.
Calvin Walker, Creswell, Ore.
The nuptial mass was cele
brated at 10 o'clock in the morn
ing by the Rev. Scholar of
Springfield, at St. Alice Cath
olic church in Eugene. About
75 guests attended the wedding,
and reception which was given
by the bride's parents also at
Eugene. The couple chose to be
married in that city since both
had received most of their
schooling there.
The bride's father escorted her
to the altar. Her gown was of
satim and trimmed with lace.
A crown with orange blossoms
held her illusion veil and she
carried a white orchid with lily
oi the valley on a Bible with
pearlized couer, a gift from
her aunt, Sister Helen Teresa,
Prescott, Ariz. For something
borrowed she wore a watch
which had belonged to her late
grandmother, Mrs. Andrew
Zawislak, and the penny she
wore in a shoe had been given
her by Miss Marilyn Geary, Eu
gene. For something old she
wore a silver medal and chain.
The bride's sister, Miss Ed
wina Zawislak, was the honor
attendant and Miss Leota Brown
and Miss Claudia Simmons, both
of Eugene, were bridesmaids.
The honor attendant's gown
was of pink net and she wore a
headdress of pink and white car
nations. The bridesmaids wore
pastel shades and their bouquets
were of yellow flowers.
Diana Walker, a sister of the
bridegroom, carried the rings.
She wore a white dress and car
ried the rings on a satin pillow
trimmed with lace and lilies of
the valley.
Best man was Dick Furrer of

Medford Couple
Home from Europe
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Clay and
small son, Scott, arrived last
week in Medford from France
where they have been living for
some time past. Mr. Clay, recent
ly discharged from the United
States Air Force with the rank
of first lieutenant, was assigned
to duty at Chambly Air Force
base in France." '
The Clays left France in mid
February, crossing on the S.S
United States after a few days
in Paris. After arriving back
in this country, they motored
through the southern states into
Mexico where they spent more
than a week with Mrs. Clay's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. George
Maddox who are spending a
year in Tecate, Mexico.
Mr. and Mrs. Clay are living
in the Maddox home, 340 South
Groveland avenue, for the spring
and summer months and in the
fall Mr. Clay plans to enter
dental school. He is a son of
Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Clay, 709
Melrose avenue.

The bride is a senior student
at Medford Senior High school.
The bridegroom attended St.
Francis High school at Eugene
and St. Martin college at Olym
pia, Wash. He is an aviation
electronic technician serving
with the Navy. He will leave
Medford April 1 for Whidby
Island, Wash., and the bride will
remain here until she has com
pleted the school year and will
join him then.
The bride was honored at two
showers before her wedding. The
first was held- at Eugene, given
by Miss Marilyn Geary, and
was attended by 25 guests.
The other was held1 here and
was given by Mrs. Theron G.
Karrick Jr., and Miss Sandra
Wilson at Miss Wilson's home,
734 West 14th street. About 20
persons attended.
Red Cross Corps
Has New Member
A meeting of the Red Cross
Motor Service corps was held at
the home of Mrs. Robert W.
Shepherd, Greenway circle,
Wednesday morning.
Mrs. Frank C. Preston Jr. pre
sided. A new recruit to the
service, Mrs. H. L. Bush Jr., was
introduced. Also attending were
Mrs. E. Al Littrell, chairman of
volunteer services, Mrs. Helen
A. Wilson, executive secretary
and Mesdames Carroll Miller,
Eugene Orr, Fred Rehling, H. E.
Morris and Myers D. Jones.

For Spring Fair ;
' Plans for a spring fair will
be made by St. Mark's Evening
guild when they meet at the
church Tuesday, March 27 at
8 p.m. Officers point out the
change in day of the session as
the group usually meets on
Mondays.
The fair will be held Thurs
day, April 5, as a money-raising
event and will include rare an
tique items for sale at reason
able prices, officers explained.
Mrs. Gretchen Wade will dem
onstrate the making of baked
foods for freezing.
At the Tuesday meeting a-10-
minute litany will be held be
fore the business session opens,
and members are asked to be
prompt. The members then will
go to the Parish house for the
remainder of the evening and
they also will work on items
for a card party which thep
plan for May 9.

Mrs. C. G. Heffner, Mrs. R. J.
McNeil and Mrs. John Axtell.

On Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Louis F. Bittle,
Ross lane, were honored guests
at a party March 17 which cele
brated their 42nd wedding an
niversary. The party was held at the
home of their son-in-law and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Beck, Old Stage road. Mrs. John
Bittle was cohostess.
Canasta and bridge were
played and a buffet turkey din
ner was served. A small group
of friends and relatives attended.

Pasco, Wash., to visit her son-in-law
and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Leo Miazga. She will ac

Lester Murphy, who will ar

cisco, en route to their home in
Pasco. Mrs. Fick plans to be
away about two weeks and plans
to stop at Portland and Eugene
on her return.
