American Industry is sending more talent scouts than ever before to col leges and universities this year In a scramble for the most valu able of raw materials eager, educated young men. Companies competing to sign up the cream of the '56 crop are making salary offers S25 a month higher than last year to get the men they want. Some firms are offering $5000 a year or more to beginners with engineering degrees. A United Press survey of ma jor industrial corporations shows that each of them was a high powered recruiting program in operation to get a share of the limited number of technically trained graduates getting diplo mas this June. In some fields there are three times as many jobs open as there are graduates qualified to fill them. The Bell Telephone System expects to interview 13,000 men on 300 campuses before the school year ends. It will hire 3200 of them, about two-thirds In the engineering field, and put them on the payroll at salaries of between $350 and $400 a month. On tha Prowl United States Steel has 50 men touring the campuses as re cruiters looking for 800 en gineers and 200 graduates with business administration and lib eral arts degrees. General Motors recruiters are seeking 2800 grad uates. General Electric expects Some College Graduates Appreciate Education Fairbanks, Alaska U.R) Some college graduates appreci ate the value of a good educa tion. Charles Sargent, associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Alaska, learned this recently when he received a letter from a mem ber of the 1955 graduating class. Enclosed in the letter was a $50 check. The graduate who washed to remain anonymous, asked Sargent to purchase a piece of equipment for the civil engineering department as a token of appreciation for what he'd learned at the university. J,OST AND FOUND , " "West Haven, Conn. U.R) Bus driver Robert Fonteyn is thinking about opening a Bureau of Missing Purses. Within one week he found two purses, con taining several hundre dollars, In his bus. The owners were found. to put on 1000, or 20 per cent more than last year. Campus placement bureaus are strained. Representatives of 310 companies have shown up at Notre Dame to interview sen iors. The interviewing schedule proved too heavy for the Prince ton placement bureau and had to be expanded into a local hotel. The young man adept with a slide rule is king. With an en gineering diploma in prospect he is likely to be interviewed by a dozen or more companies and can count on going to work for as much as $400 a month to start if he is picked up by one of the bigger firms. E. C. Meyers, assistant vice president for industrial relations at U. S. Steel, said his company is offering engineering grads $425 a month this year compared with $394 a year ago. "We had to raise the figure in order to compete," he said. The talent search is a long and costly process for industry. Some companies make the scouting program a year-round affair. They may spend well over $1000 filling a single job. Red Carpet Treatment The Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and its ESSO research lab oratories expect to contact 3500 seniors in order to find the 240 they will hire. Those who show promise are invited to visit the ESSO layout at Linden, N.J., where the plush carpet is rolled out to greet them. One firm says it has no hope of filling all its 1956 manpower requirements from the colleges, men from other companies. The demand for men with technical skill is greater in 1956 than it was in 1955 and there is no sign when it will taper off. "There's no relief in sight for the shortage of competent en gineers, said a spokesman for General Electric. "It's important that all elements of industry and the military utilize our technical manpower as effectively as poS' sible." Judge Switches Pair's Requested Sentences Shawano, Wis. (U.R) Ronald Bear, 18, and James A. Webster, 21, recommended their own sentences for burg lary charges but neither got what he asked for. Bear asked Judge C. B. Dil lett for probation and Webster requested a jail term. Dillett checked their records and granted their requests in reverse Bear went to jail and Webster got probation. School Milk Program Extension Approved Washington U.R) The ad ministration won a minor farm battle victory in the House yester day with approval of a two-year $160 million extension of the federal school milk program. The legislation was sent to the White House on a 406 to 0 roll call after the House rejected, 215 to 195, a Democratic at tempt to keep the extension tied up in the controversial farm bill. ifish Patrol Attacked by Cypriots Nicosia, Cyprus U.R) Cypriot extremists attacked a I British patrol with bombs and gunfire yesterday at the eastern end of the island near Fama gusta. Unofficial reports said one Britisrf soldier was killed and two others injured. The new anti-British violence by union-with-Greece agitators came with the announcement in Athens of the death of Greek Orthodox Archbishop Spyridon, leader of the Committee for the Liberation of Cyprus. It followed a day of anti Greek demonstrations by Turk ish residents of the island in an announcement by a Turkish Cypriot leader that a protest would be lodged with the Unit ed Nations.
