mileage stretching competition
was marred yesterday by the J
first accident and injury in the

Driver Les Viland, previously
a dinner of top honors in the
run. hit a soft shoulder 20 miles
north of Trona, Calif., and over

Viland was not injured, but
his relief driver and two ob
servers sustained minor injuries.
Youth Survives Drop .
Info Old Mine Shaft
Provo, Utah (U.P.) A Brigham
Young University student from
California plunged 85 feet into
an abandoned mine shaft and
lived to tell about it.
Roland Griffin, 20, San Carlos,
Calif., was in "fairly good" con
dition today at Utah Valley Hos
pital here after falling into the
darkened shaft of the Buckley
mine in Rock Canyon east of
Provo.
The mishap occurred while
Griffin was hiking with Gary
Proctor, 19. also of San Carlos;
George Wright, 18, San Diego,
and George Warford, 19, Berke
ley. Calif.
They were exploring the aban
doned mine shaft when Griffin
stepped into the almost vertical
shaft, crashed through rotten
timbers and aswooden ladder
aitS came to rest at the bottom
of the pit.

Sports Festival
Group Appointed

dinating committee for a nation
al sports festival observance in j
Oregon during May was named j
today by Gov. Elmo Smith.
, The festival, fourth annual na- j
tional event of its kind, is de-i
signed to stress the values of j
well-conducted sports and recre- j
ational activities and to encour-j
age widespread interest and sup- j
port in sound programs of recre- j
ation and physical education.
The committee, headed by
George Sirnio, director of health
and physical education for the
State Department of Education,
will develop plans for a state
wide festival observance. It will
work together with mayors and
other civic leaders throughout
the state in mapping events suit
able to each individual commu
nity, the governor said.

FBI Chief Blames
'Soff-Headedness'
For Crime Wave
Washington (UP) FBI
Director J. Edgar Hoover bad
harsh words today for "soft
headed"' parents who fail to
teach their children "respect for
God. the law. and others."
Hoover blamed them for the
nation's postwar crime wave
which he feels "is essentially a
youth problem."
Children need playgrounds,
youth agencies, and organiza
tions like the Boy Scouts, Hoover
told a House appropriations sub
committee. But "no one of these
can take the place of the mother
and father conscious of their
responsibility to inculcate in
youth respect for God, the law,
and others."
'"That is what is lacking to
day." he said.
Crime Wave Critical
The nation's chief law enforce
ment officer told the subcom
mittee in closed-door testimony
published last night that while
the postwar crime wave has
shown signs of slacking off
slightly, it still is critical, par
ticularly among youths.
He gave figures showing an
estimated 2.255.000 major crimes
were committed in 1955 half
of one per cent less than in 1954.
This was the first drop since
1947.
But he noted that during the
first half of last year, a major
crime was committed every 13",9
seconds. Every 4.2 minutes there
was a crime of murder, man
slaughter, rape or assault with
intent to kill. '

to meet Jameson; also 23.
She was met at the station by
the young man's father who ex
plained that his son, an appren
tice engineer aboard a British
freighter, is in America.

of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers meeting
here yesterday heard speakers
stress the need for more train
ed scientists and engineers, and
advocate further hydro-clcclric
dam construction in the North
west. Joseph W. Barker, president
of the society, told members
that teacher salaries are an ob
stacle iii obtaining enough
trained scientists and engin
eers. In his keynote address before
the 800 members he said, "Tea
cher pay is certainly an ob
stacle. What happens when a
high school science teacher sees
a newspaper advertisement of
fering $400 to S450 a month for
a new engineering graduate
and compares it with his "own
S250 or S300 a month?"
Barker added that a partial
solution of the problem may lie
in allowing professional engin
eers to devote a few hours each
week to class room instruction
on a voluntary basis.
Kenneth W. McCaffree,. assis
tant professor of economics at
the University of Washington,
told the group that the best bet
for ' the Northwest still lies in
the development of hydro-electric
power, despite the fact that
they may later be outdated by
nuclear power plants.
An estimated 535,000 acres
were seeded to rye in North
Dakota during the fall of 1955.

Man Bound by Thug
Portland (U.R) A southeast
Portland restaurant was Tobbed
and the owner's arms and legs i
were bound with wire early to
day by a nervous holdup man
who escaped with about $50.
James Gcmelli. proprietor of
the restaurant said he had just
opened for business when the
man. entered and pulled a .45
caliber automatic. He took the
money from Gemelli's wallet
after binding the proprietor with
wire. It took Gemclli only two
or three minutes to free himself.
County police said gas station
receipts with a car license num
ber were found on the floor
after the holdup. They said they
were on the trail of a suspect.-
Deschutes Permit
Revocation Asked
Washington (U.R) Rollin E.
Bowles. Portland attorney and
chairman of the Save-trie-Des-chutes
committee, today asked
that a license granted by the
Federal Power Commission for
Pelton dam on the Deschutes
river be revoked.
Bowles appeared before the
Senate Committee on Interstate
and Foreign Commerce. The
Senate hearing was on a bill in
troduced last month by Sen.
Richard L. Neubergcr (D-Ore.)
which proposes, revocation of the
license and restoration to Ore
gon the control of waters of its
internal non-navigable streams,
such as the Deschutes.
In a speech prepared for de
livery to the committee. Bowles
supported Neuberger's bill.
Pair Awaits Action
On Kidnaping Charge
Portland (U.P.) Max Frank
lin Allen and his wife, Mary, ac
cused of a Midwest kidnaping,
were brought here yesterday
from Klamath Falls to await fed
eral proceedings on the charge.
Allen is held under' $10,000
bond and his wife $2,500. Feder
al authorities said they were ac
cused of taking a man at gun
point from Kansas to Missouri
and forcing him to give them
S516 from his safe in a Kansas
City ballroom.
The United States annexed the
Territory of Hawaii on July 7,
1898.
