o Scientist Indicates Supersonic Plane To Succeed Jet Bomber Los Angeles (U.R) The chief (scientist of tlje Air Force strong ly indicated Saturday that a supersonic bomber is being de signed as an eventual successor to the 650-mile-an-hour B52 heavy jet bomber now going into service. Dr. H. Guyford Stever also said that development of an inter-continental ballistic missile will prove in many ways to be more difficult than development of earth satellite vehicles like those to be shot into space dur ing the 1957-58 International Geophysical Year. He predicted in a speech pre pared for the Massachusetts In- Salem Youths lo Enter Pleas Monday . Salem (U.R) Two 18-year-old Salem youths accused of the shotgun holdup of 15 women and children at a "birthday club" party near here Wednesday, will enter pleas in District Court Monday. Complaint against the two teen-agers, Earl Eldon Lane and Luverne Francis Truitt, was signed by Mrs. Glen Gentry from whose purse $40 was re ported taken during the rob bery. ' Bail for the pair was set at $5000. Officers said the youths en tered the home of Earl Huber in Marion community brandishing a shotgun and wearing T-shirt masks. They fled with money; a .38 caliber revolver and bright ly wrapped presents which they dumped into Turner creek after (lighting a police roadblock. . Police said Lane had ' admit ted 12 other burglaries in Mar ion and Polk county and had im plicated Truitt, an airman on leave, in several of the crimes. Construction Worker Killed in St. Helens St. Helens, Ore. (U.R) Ar chie William Kneeland, Port land construction worker, was fatally injured here Thursday while working at the St. Helens Safeway store. Kneeland was foreman for a Portland electrical contractor. He apparently tripped while working in the attic of the store and struck his head on a beam. stitute of Technology Alumni Association here that the next 10 years will see development of combat planes that take off and land vertically. Nuclear-Powered Bombers He also forecast nuclear-powered bombers that will have "essentially infinite range." But he said there probably will not be nuclear - powered civilian planes because of ground hand ling and shielding problems. Stever, who has the title of Air Force chief assistant, said after discussing the B47 and B52 jet bombers that "we are now considering the conversion in the next few years to bombers with supersonic capabilities." He pointed out that one such bomb er, the B58, is "known publicly to be under development." The B58 is the prospective suc cessor to the medium-range B47. The Air Force has not disclosed what it is doing about a super sonic bomber to replace the B52. Would Fly 800 MPH A supersonic bomber would fly at least 800 miles per hour and possibly faster. Discussing the earth satellite vehicle, Stever said it will have to reach a speed of 25,000 feet per second which is at least two and one-half times the speed achieved by rockets up to now. He said it is a task that will not "be tossed off with great ease." The speed requirement for an intercontinental ballistic missile will be not much . less, Stever said, and other problems will make it a "greater technical achievement than that of a small satellite." The payload for a militarily useful missile will be much great er than that of a scientific satel lite. The accuracy will be "con siderably greater." And the problem of getting the missile's warhead back through the at mosphere and onto its target without melting must be solved. St: Patrick's Day Too Much for LA Man Long Beach, Calif (U.R) Thoughts of the old sod ap parently were just too much on St. Patrick's day for Irish born, homesick William O' Connell, 32, as he strolled along a street. "Sure, I'm glad you stopped me." he told motorcycle offi cer Richard Johnson. "I want to give myself up." O'Connell was booked on a drunk charge while immigra tion authorities checked his story that he had been in the United States illegally for the last five years. He said he stowed away on a British freighter to Canada and then' walked over the Canadian bor der. Skin on the average human face reflects about half the light that strikes it. Israel Accuses Egypt of Series Of Gaza Attacks Jerusalem, Israeli Sector (U.R) Israel accused Egypt Saturday of a two-day series of running attacks against Israeli settle ments in the tense Gaza Strip border area. Army spokesman Capt. Naf tali Lewin said Egyptian forces struck twice Friday and twice Saturday, mostly against the Kissufim settlement which is a control point on the vital Israeli water pipeline into the Negev desert. ' Attack Camp Egypt accused the Israelis of an attack on an Arab refugee camp in the Gaza Strip: A com plaint lodged with the United Nations Mixed Armistice Com mission said Israeli forces opened fire with automatic rifles against the Moghazi Palestinian Arab refugee camp and killed one Arab. The Israeli charges pointed up the increasing activity along the narrow sandy border between the two countries. Capt. Lewin said in Friday's action an Egyptian outpost opened up at Kissufim and Israeli troops at the settlement returned the fire. Later, he said, Egyptian infiltrators tried three times to get into Israeli territory near the Nirim and Zikim set tlements along the Gaza Strip. They were put to flight, he said. The Israeli spokesman said there were no casualties. Rifle, Machinegun Firt He said that in Saturday's ac tion, Egyptian gunposts turned rifle and machinegun fire on Kissufim twice in the morning and three times in the afternoon when Egyptians tried to infil trate Israeli lines. The infiltra tors reached the outskirts of the village of Bealry before they were turned back, Lewin said. Meanwhile, Israel also accused Jordanians of spraying bullets into the Israeli sector of Jeru salem yesterday from the wall surrounding the Arab section of the divided Holy City. More than 300 sheriff's dep uties and private citizens had searched for the boy, John Rich ard Sandoval, since he disap peared late Friday from his home in Rivera. While the search was under way and the child's father ex pressed fears that the boy was a kidnap victim, five-year-old Philip French told his mother that "Ricky" had jumped into the cistern Friday. Deputies quickly located the eight-foot deep cistern, located about three blocks from the Sandoval home, and pulled out the child's body. Philip French told deputies he,, Ricky and another boy were playjng when they discovered the cistern, which was covered by a 50-pound steel plate.
