Some 2,000 celebrities and workers of the TV industry will put on their best minks and black ties to watch the Emmy statu ettes being handed out on a converted ice rink, the huge Pan-Pacific auditorium. The senior award-givers the movies' Oscars conduct their affair with seriousness. But Linkletter thinks, "the nicest thing about the TV Academy is it's a young group and has not yet become pompous." The Emmy show has its em phasis on humor instead of on tearful acceptance speeches by serious stars as at the Oscar cer emony. Comedians Join Cast The Oscar crowd usually has serious actors and actresses to present the awards. But the Emmy group hopes to keep the TV audience smiling by having comics as presenters, including George Gobel, Jimmy Durante, Bob Cummings, Martha Raye and Sam Levenson. Also unlike the Oscars, most of the Emmy nominees plan to show up for the show both here and in New York. Gracie Allen, Eve Arden, Walt Disney, Loret ta Young, Barry Sullivan, Rob ert Young and Danny Thomas are among the 208 nominees who made reservations. Linkletter offered to emcee the event after a spirited squab ble over the Emmy nomination ballot. One group tried to can cel the event. Jerry Lewis and Dick Powell were among stars who turned down 'the emcee job. Friends Give Advice , "A lot of friends told me 1 shouldn't have taken it because it has been turned down by oth ers," he grinned. "That's a fet ish in this town to keep face. I feel the TV Academy needed help." Linkletter emceed the Em my's second awards, but the eve ning was nearly catastrophic. The curtain failed to go up, the microphone conked out and a plaster column on the stage fell over and knocked a violinist un conscious. , "Nothing worse could hap pen," the genial Linkletter said. "Doing the banquet this year won't mean much work. I'd be going to the dinner anyway, and I'd just as soon be up on the stage as sit in the audience."
