TEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE" Friday, March IB, 1955 Louisiana Accident On The Side Victim's Identity Remains Confused By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Features Syndicate, Inc.) Luling, La. (U.R) A-woman's identity, once concealed by her coma and then her death from an automobile collision, today was again confused by a babel of aliases. A funeral home shipped the bodies of cattle buyer Oscar Eu gene. Hoskins and his woman companion to Phoenix, for burial without definitely establishing her identity. Hoskins, 43, was killed in stantly in the collision two days ago and the woman died early yesterday without giving her name. Personal effects of the couple gave no inkling of her identity. Hoskins' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hoskins, of Phoenix claimed both bodies in the be lief that she was his bride. O ' Trace Woman Authorities through a six-state investigation meanwhile traced the woman to Odessa, Tex., where police believed she had used as many as six names. The name apparently last used was Leona Wells Mantooth, 45, Odessa police said. She was booked at Odessa for drunken q driving. Hoskins, 43, Washburn, Mo., as quickly identified by his papers and a packet of money orders in his car totaling $17. 500. Police also found a blank marriage license in the car. Police at Washburn said Hos kins, who came there as a cattle buyer about eight months ago from Medford, Ore., could not read or write and frequently car o ried large sums of money. He left Washburn'a week ago, police said. Chief Deputy Sheriff P. D. Lorio Jr., said a tavern owner near the accident scene in Boutte, La., told him the couple had been in "for a beer or two" and said they were celebrating their marriage. The institute of . (U.R) Ray mond Carter and James Smoth ers landed in jail because some body "made the pants too long." They were arrested when a po liceman spotted an extra pair of pants legs flapping from under neath one of their coats. They admitted stealing the pants from a department store. e news Griffin Creek Grange Grange met in regular session March 18. All committees re ported. All Grangers and friends are invited. xSLf a "ian over 30 years old whose a total loss, Phoenix Grange The meeting of Phoenix Grange March 13 was well at tended. Several visitors were present for the lecturer s pro gram, which preceded the regu lar meeting and was open to the public. Mrs. Frank Perl showed col ored slides taken in Italy and Denmark and in the vicinity of the Mediterranean sea. Many large and old churches and buildings, and their elaborate architectural designs and decora ti'ons were described. The ruins of Pompeii, the city destroyed in 79 A.D. by the erup tion of Mt. Vesuvius, Monte Carlo, Eiffel Tower, Isle of Capri Monaco and the Palace of Mona co and other places of interest which she visited were shown, and described, as well as several slides of children and people she met. Grange meeting was called to order at 9 p.m. Charles Hocker smith, reporting on agriculture. gave an account of the chamber of commerce meeting in Medford which he attended as a visitor. The Talent irrigation project was discussed there. The prospect of more manufacturing plants for southern Oregon was considered as handicapped by the distance from material and labor, and also there was no way of dispos ing . of the water, used in such plants without polluting streams. Another subject of interest to agriculture, was the soil bank, which if put into effect would create a big demand for grass seeds. Alfalfa weevil seems to be gaining headway in. Oregon, and is likely due to hay being ship ped in from other states where they have been infested by the insect for some time. Reporting on horticulture, Jake Arnold told of the damage done to apple trees in the state of Washington, by large herds of elk and deer. As many as 3200 of the animals were literally stripping the trees which had already been damaged by freez ing. It is almost impossible to drive them from the orchards because of deep snow, cold, and hunger. He reported Oregon orchards in good condition. Mrs. Willis House on the Youth Committee reported that the site for the Jackson county detention home has finally been decided on and purchased. Secretary Mrs. Melvin Lattie read a letter of thanks from Mrs. Hazel Fish, who is ill in a hos pital in Chico, Calif. Mrs. Fish is a 25-year mem ber of Phoenix Grange. A 25- year pin was sent to her recently. Master Melvin Lattie, as a member o fthe Phoenix Citizens committee, presented to the Grange a proposal from the school board that Phoenix add an agriculture department to the school, necessitating additional rooms and a teacher. As Phoe nix is now a first class district, money is available without float ing bond- or additional taxes.. After some discussion, the concensus was favorable to the proposal. Lecturer Dee Hendrickson an nounced the program at the March 27 meeting would be put on by Jake Arnold. His program is already planned and a colored wild life filmfcwill be shown by Conger-Morris. The picture will be at 8 p.m. preceding the reg ular meeting, and be open to the public. Serving refreshments after the meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Dee Hendrickson, Mr. and Mrs. Chet Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Densmore. This years campaign is to be the greatest in the movements 23-year history, according to Robert Dickey, Jackson, county chairman. From March , 10 through April 10 residents have an opportunity to give financial assistance to crippled children, Dickey said. Included in the local drive will be the annual lily sale March 24 on National Crippled Children's day, with members of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority and girls at Medford high school in charge. Special events by service clubs will supplement the activities, and coin containers will be placed in local businesses. The Mail Tribune and . local tele vision and radio stations have special programs planned to en able residents to understand the work of the Oregon society.
