Father Vows To Burn Home If Son Dies of Infected Rat Bites Detroit (U.R) The father . of a 5-month-oId boy who was savagely chewed by rats today vowed to burn his slum home if the child dfes. Empress Connors, an unem ployed furnace man, uttered the threat through tears after his son, Nathaniel, was bitten more Washington Stale Places Embargo on Turkey Shipments Portland (U.R) The state of Washington issued an embargo yesterday on importation from Oregon of live turkeys, poults and turkey hatching eggs as re sult of an outbreak of psittacosis in two Oregon turkey flocks. Sverre Omdahl, Washington state agriculture director, said the embargo order was effective immediately. He added that he hoped the order could be modi' fied as soon as 'nfected areas are defined. Turkey growers in the two states said the embargo would work a considerable hardship on both sides of the state line. Nor mally there is a large movement of both hatching eggs and poults between the two states.. .-Tlocks Quarantined The Oregon agriculture depart ment has placed under quaran tine the two flocks where the pneumonia-like disease broke out. One is located at Scappoose and the other on Sauvies Island. 'Two persons died in Oregon last week as a result of what has been preliminarily listed as psit tacosis. In one of the cases, though. Dr. Harold Erickson, state health officer, said the pri mary cause of death has been at tributed to pneumonia with psit tacosis as a possible secondary cause. Some 30 other persons in Ore gon who had been in contact with ihe infected birds, have been reported ill of the disease. Dr. Erickson said there are indi cations that persons other than the 30 listed last week have con tacted psittacosis. than 20 times on the face and arm. The thumb and little finger of one hand virtually were chewed away. The infant's face was raw from bites on his tongue, nose, chin and cheek by the rodents which invaded his crib. Condition Serious Doctors said Nathaniel's con dition was "serious" and -it would be some time before they learned whether infection sets in. A hospital spokesman said a rat's bite was second in dang er of infection only to that of a human. Connors made the gruesome discovery when he awoke early Monday in his dark, grimy 5 room flat. His wife, Marion, 20, said she fed the baby who has three brothers under four years of age at 2 a.m. and noticed nothing wrong. Policewomen described the second-floor rear flat as a "filthy hovel." They said the dwelling, one of four in the buil ding, was unpainted and littered with debris. Mrs. Connors was held for in vestigation of neglect. Connors said he had com plained about rats to the land lord, Ben Magid, and was given some powder and wood fabric and wire to plug up the holes. "If my baby dies, I'm going to burn that place down." Magid said he had arranged for repairs which were to begin this week. A workman was on the job Monday fixing an other dwelling which had been damaged by fire nearly- a month ago. Robert L. Hansen, a Health Department inspector, said he would recommend that Magid repair the building within 30 days or vacate, the premises. Dying Winter Pulls Double Reverse Act PROSPECT By MONA ODOM Miss Bonny Holmes, former student from Prospect High School, is in the Sacred Heart hos pital of Medford. Her condition is not serious and she will re turn home shortly. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Burnll. and family have been in Port land over the week end visiting relatives. They will return home the first of the week. Airman 3rd class Bob Darrohn and Morriss Jones, who have been home on furlough visiting their parents' returned to their air base in California, Sunday, March 11. When they return to base they will be sent to Florida. . The Prospect Junior-Senior prom was held in the Medford . hotel Friday, March 9. There were about 40 who attended. This is the first year the prom has been held in Medford. Mrs. Helen Hubbard of Pros pect returned home Sunday after being in the hospital. She is feel ing like her own self again. By UNITED PRESS . The dying winter pulled a dou ble reverse act today, chilling the Southwest with a cold wave and boosting temperatures in the Dakotas. The cold wave bit all the way to the Gulf of Mexico and Texas' temperatures dropped 20 to 30 degrees. Laredo came down from 75 to 46 and Brownsville from 71 to 50. New Mexico also got a cold snap, vith temperatures drop ping 20 to 35 degrees. But in North Dakota, the mercury climbed as much as 40 degrees, going from 20 below to a still chilly 20 above, at Bismarck. Rains .accompanied the cold front, which stretched from Southeast Texas northeastward through the lower Mississippi Valley, Alabama, Tennessee, 'and the middle Atlantic Coast states. The nation's coldest state was Wisconsin, where it was five be low zero at Wausau and four be low at Lone Rock. San Francisco (U.R) Con demned convict Caryl Chess man, author of the best-seller -Cell 2455, Death Row," filed a routine petition yesterday ask ing to be declared a pauper dur ing his next appeal to escape the gas chamber. The petition, to avoid court costs for the action, will be argued March 19. Chief Judge William Denman of the appeals court granted the right for a new appeal on Feb. 27, after Federal Judge Louis E. Goodman had denied a Chessman petition for a new trial. 4-H Club News Central Point Pig Club The Central Point Pig club met at the Willie 'Germann home Feb. 26. We talked about a window display for 4-H Club week. David Foote and Jeff An horn were to make arrange ments for a window for the dis play. James Frink and David Foote gave a demonstration on farm safety. Glenn Klein, Jackson county club agent, judged the demonstration. The next meeting will be at Judy GebharcTs home on Geb hard road on March 26 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served by Mrs. Germann. Russell Frink, Reporter Argentina Records 141 New Polio Cases Buenos Aires U.R) The Health Manistry reported Mon day night that 141 .new cases of infantile paralysis had been reg istered since Last Friday, with 26 deaths. Since July 1, 1955, when the current outbreak started, there have been 1.488 cases in Argen tina, with 1?8 deaths, the minis try said. Gold Hill Livestock Club The Gold Hill Livestock 4-H club will meet Wednesday at the Beman home. The club did not meet in February so it is im portant that every club member attend this meeting. Fairey was attended Monday by Dr. Paul Dudley White, Bos ton heart specialist who attend ed President Eisenhower during his recent illness. Fairey and White have been friends since World War II, The doctor made a fast round-trip by air. Sir Rich ard had the attack running after a thief who snatched a purse through the window of his home.
