Washington Stale
Places Embargo on
Turkey Shipments
Portland (U.R) The state of
Washington issued an embargo
yesterday on importation from
Oregon of live turkeys, poults
and turkey hatching eggs as re
sult of an outbreak of psittacosis
in two Oregon turkey flocks.
Sverre Omdahl, Washington
state agriculture director, said
the embargo order was effective
immediately. He added that he
hoped the order could be modi'
fied as soon as 'nfected areas
are defined.
Turkey growers in the two
states said the embargo would
work a considerable hardship on
both sides of the state line. Nor
mally there is a large movement
of both hatching eggs and poults
between the two states..
.-Tlocks Quarantined
The Oregon agriculture depart
ment has placed under quaran
tine the two flocks where the
pneumonia-like disease broke
out. One is located at Scappoose
and the other on Sauvies Island.
'Two persons died in Oregon
last week as a result of what has
been preliminarily listed as psit
tacosis. In one of the cases,
though. Dr. Harold Erickson,
state health officer, said the pri
mary cause of death has been at
tributed to pneumonia with psit
tacosis as a possible secondary
cause.
Some 30 other persons in Ore
gon who had been in contact
with ihe infected birds, have
been reported ill of the disease.
Dr. Erickson said there are indi
cations that persons other than
the 30 listed last week have con
tacted psittacosis.
than 20 times on the face and
arm.
The thumb and little finger
of one hand virtually were
chewed away. The infant's face
was raw from bites on his
tongue, nose, chin and cheek by
the rodents which invaded his
crib.
Condition Serious
Doctors said Nathaniel's con
dition was "serious" and -it
would be some time before they
learned whether infection sets
in. A hospital spokesman said a
rat's bite was second in dang
er of infection only to that of a
human.
Connors made the gruesome
discovery when he awoke early
Monday in his dark, grimy 5
room flat. His wife, Marion, 20,
said she fed the baby who has
three brothers under four years
of age at 2 a.m. and noticed
nothing wrong.
Policewomen described the
second-floor rear flat as a
"filthy hovel." They said the
dwelling, one of four in the buil
ding, was unpainted and littered
with debris.
Mrs. Connors was held for in
vestigation of neglect.
Connors said he had com
plained about rats to the land
lord, Ben Magid, and was given
some powder and wood fabric
and wire to plug up the holes.
"If my baby dies, I'm going
to burn that place down."
Magid said he had arranged
for repairs which were to begin
this week. A workman was on
the job Monday fixing an
other dwelling which had been
damaged by fire nearly- a month
ago.
Robert L. Hansen, a Health
Department inspector, said he
would recommend that Magid
repair the building within 30
days or vacate, the premises.
