Gen. John Glubb Pasha (above) as commander of its Arab Legion and Sir An thony Eden called an emer gency Cabinet meeting in London to discuss the major blow to Western influence in the Middle East. Atlanta (U.R) Alabama legis lators today drafted a "go slow" plea, warning the U.S. Supreme Court of a danger of civil strife from forcing the South to deseg regate too hastily. The Alabama Senate received a House-passed resolution asking the court "to permit the white and colored races in the South to live in peace and harmony." The proposed resolution, in tended as an official appeal to the Supreme Court, cites the Autherine Lucy riots at the Uni versity of Alabama as evidence of potential danger. Found Impossible "The University of Alabama has made a bona fide attempt to carry out the decree of the court and in so doing has found-it im possible at this time with immi nent danger of civil strife," the resolution said. The resolution departed from past southern state legislation purporting to "nullify" court de cisions or sidestep them, but echoed consternation the Univer sity of Alabama case raised in deep South states. "An overwhelming majority of the people of this section of the South are possessed with a deep determination not to. let any group putside the South force them at this time to change the social pattern," the resolution said. Arkansas state Sen. Jim John son in addressing 2,500 Citizens Council members Tuesday night in Birmingham, Ala., urged that "violence and hatred be kept out" of efforts to preserve segre gation. Johnson was the featured speaker but Leonard Wilson, 2.0- Contractor Has Bone To Pick With Architects Chicago U.R) Chris Paschen has a bone to pick with modern architects. Paschen is one of the nation's biggest building maintenance contractors. His grandfather was Chicago's. first tuckpointer. . "Modern architecture is all wet," said Paschen. "Literally." For instance, some of the gleaming new glass and steel apartment buildings on Chi cago's lakefront "leak like sieves" in a heavy rain, he claimed. Architecture has gone from one extreme to another, Paschen continued, from the overstuffed gingerbread motif with ornate cornices and doodads to the stark, sheer "straight up-and-down look." The old fashioned building can be a hazard to life and limb, Paschen said. One of his crews at work on an older downtown building recently tossed a line over a cornice and "almost pul led it loose." According to Paschen, we're walking around "with a lot of decaying masonry hanging over our heads." Predicts Change But it seems the "modern look" has its disadvantages, too. "These modern buildings just aren't properly sheltered," Pas chen said. "Water runs down the sides and seeps into the mortar joints." One outstanding exception, he said, is the recently completed Prudential skyscraper on the lakefront here. It has huge win dows mounted in aluminum panels known as spandrels. "But the windows are framed in rubber," he said, "inflated rubber tubing that seals them tight." Paschen believes architects have tried to adapt the building styles of semi-arid Latin Amer ican areas to sections of the United States where rainfall is copious and temperature changes are wicked. "But you can't put all the blame on the architects," Pas chen said. "They have to consid er costs. And glass is cheaper than brick or stone." Paschen predicts the architec tural pendulum will swing back. "We wont go back to ginger bread," he said. "But I'll bet we get away from the ultra-mod ern." Minimum recorded rainfall in the U.S. is in Death Valley, Calif., which has 1.73 inches per year. Once during a period of 401 days in that region, there was no rain at all. RUDY - MIX Phone 2-5336 or 2-5897 M. C. LININGER & SONS year-old University of Alabama sophomore, won biggest applause by calling for a "housecleaning" of state and university officials. Wilson accused the university of "conducting a 'witch hunt" through an "inquisition commit tee" investigating possible stu dent participation in riots pro testing the admission of the uni versity's first Negro student. Gov. Marvin Griffin of Georgia Tuesday told an industrial de velopment forum in Savannah, Ga., that the South's segregation problems are "going to get worse before they get better." .M l iiwjiu ii..,ijiiiu . wwiiJuiiij. . i. .ii.li. m i.i.i... i . iuus14J.UI4im'VMI.MI I if i $&s&y ADMITTING.
