MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TBIBOT?I-IJEYEtl 1 Med; une Tuesday, February 28, 195S Alabama Win 95-81 Over Tennessee By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press Sports Writer Alabama all but ended Ken tucky's long reign in Southeast era conference basketball today, even as Kentucky was venting its fury in the greatest scoring spree in Wildcat history. Alabama's Crimson Tide clinched at least a tie for the league crown Monday night by whipping Tennessee, 95-81, and will nail down the whole thing by winning one of its two re maining games. Kentucky tried to stay in the race by burying Georgia 143-66, for a school scor ing record. ' ' ' . Thus ends a fantastic era in which Kentucky won the SEC championship the last 11 straight years it was eligible. Since 1944, the only time the Wildcats failed to win the league crown was 1953, when they were under a year's sus pension by the NCAA. Lopsided victory left Illinois and Iowa tied for the Big Ten lead and set the stage for their showdown battle this Saturday at Iowa and on national televi sion. Illini Drub Gophers The Illini, , trailing by three points at half, opened the second half with a seven-point spree and went on .to drub Minne sota, 87-81. ' Iowa led easily almost all the way ' in handing Northwestern its 12th straight conference de feat, 86-68. . In other leading games: Okla homa City, already in NCAA tourney, downed Houston which has clinched a tie for the Mis souri Valley title, 76-67; Iowa State took second place in the Big Seven by handing Colorado its first home court loss in three years, 79-62; " Holy Cross trounced Connecticut, 103-81, in a meeting of two NCAA-bound teams; Julius McCoy's 35 points led Michigan State to an 89-82 win over Wisconsin; Purdue gained a 72-63 " victory over Michigan; Tulsa took a 59-56 de cision over Bradley and Jim Ray" of Toledo tallied 40 in a 77-67 : victory over Ohio uni versity. ' . Sports Bulletin Slarkville, Mils. (U.R) Youthful Darrell Royal, mas ter of the split-T formation, resigned today as head coach at Mississippi State college to accept the head coaching job at the University of Wash Pick Three NAIA Teams Portland (U.R) Three teams were named today to compete in the district 2 NAIA torney here but the selection of the fourth member of the tournament was deferred until Thursday morn ing. The University of Portland, Portland State,, and Pacific drew bids yesterday. In contention for the fourth spot are Eastern Ore gon, Linfield and Lewis and Clark. Portland State took its Spot by virtue of winning the Oregon Collegiate conference flag. Pa cific, in second place in the Northwest, conference, will rep resent its loop because title win ning; College of Idaho is in an other. NAIA district. Two of the berths go to at large entries. The University of Portland was named to one of these spots. Linfield plays Willamette to night in what could be a decider for the fourth spot. Should Lin field lose it would be out of con sideration.; But if the Wildcats should win they would be tied with Pacific for second spot in the league and the nod probably would go to either them or East era r Oregon, number two fin isher in the Oregon Collegiate conference. - Johnny Pod res Plans to Pitch Until Army Calls By FRED DOWN United Press Sports Writer Johnny Podres, who taught the New York Yankees a thing or three in the World Series, has disclosed he learned an im portant lesson, too. "The series taught me that I can win jn the major leagues with two pitches a fastball and a changeup," the Brooklyn Dodg ers' star southpaw said. "So, from bow on, my curve ball will be my third pitch. I intend to use it 'as a waste pitch and not let 'em hit it." Checks-In Podres, who beat the Yankees in the third and seventh games of the 1955 classic, checked into the Dodgers' Vero Beach, Fla., training camp Sunday and made plans to pitch "until I'm called into the Army." Although declared 1A by his draft board, Podres said he has yet to receive notice of an induction date. "All I know is that I intend to play baseball until they call me," he said. "They'll know where to find me when they want me." Podres also disclosed that he made about $23,000 during the winter; on the strength of his World Series performance. Only a 9-10 pitcher during the season, Johnny earned about $12,000 in salary but disclosed that his earnings on the "rubber chick en" circuit increased his total intake to $35,000 for the year. Anne Quast Among Tourney Favorites Ormond Beach, Fla. (U.R) Young Anne Quast of Marysville, Wash., enjoying her best winter of competition, teed off as one of the favorites today in the qualifying round of the 27th an nual South Atlantic Women's Amateur Golf Championship. The 18-year-old University of Washington coed was on tle winning team in both the Holly wood, Fla., four-ball tournament and the Palm Beach Mixed Four some Championship earlier in the season. ACCEPTS POSITION Portland (U.R) Harry Scarff, who recently announced his resignation as football coach at Central Catholic high school here, said today he had accepted a position as head foot ball coach and athletic director at St. Vincent's high school in Vallejo, Calif.
