Ike's Announcement of Political Future, Expected Feb. 29, May Be Revealed on TV By LYLE C. Bible, which has suggested to some persons that he will ap pear personally before the vot ers on television.. He . will return from his Georgia vacation day after to morrow. Mr. Eisenhower told associates here before emplan ing for Georgia last week that he wanted a second term. He also wanted to test his physical well-being during a week or 10 days of comparatively vigorous Activity before making any final .' decision or announcement of his political intentions. ' That is the way it lay when the President departed Feb. 15 for the Thomasville plantation f Treasury Secrestary George M. Humphrey. . If Mr, Eisenhower has further advised Washington associates of his intentions, the United Press is not aware of it. The Re publican ' leadership, ; however, has followed closely the reports from Thomasville, especially of Mr. Eisenhower's steadily ex panding physical activity. Positive and Final . , Special Washington dispatches reported Wednesday that Presi dential Assistant Sherman Adams and Republican National Committee Chairman Leonard W. Hall had informed other Re publican leaders that Mr. Eisen hower would run that the de ' cision was positive and final. . Hall said the report was "news to me." Hagerty denied the story in behalf of Adams of whom he inquired by telephone. Several other Republican lead ers said they knew of no such word from Mr. Eisenhower. Most, perhaps all of them, are confident, however, that he will be a second term candidate. Nothing From Thomasville : There has been nothing from Thomasville challenging the judgment expressed on Feb. 14 by the physicians who gave the President the 'latest and politic ally most critical medical exam ination. Dr. Paul Dudley White, his principal specialist, then found the President well able to' continue active public life. Under those circumstances, the confidence of Republican leaders that Mr. Eisenhower will accept a second term is readily under stood. It could be, however, that the President would not soon announce an active candidacy for renomination on his return here, or announce such at all. Something Different Expected It would be typical of Mr. Eisenhower to do it somewhat differently. A different method would be in sequence, also, to the unusual manner in which the public has been kept inform ed of Mr. Eisenhower's illness I Ice's Yo u n g B roth e r Believes President Will Be Candidate La Grange, 111. U.R) Earl Ei senhower said Wednesday night he thinks his brother, the Presi dent, will seek a second term. But he emphasized this is a personal opinion and if he were in the President's shoes "I'd re tire to that farm at Gettysburg." Earl Eisenhower was the Lack of Highway Bill Said Costing Oregon Millions Portland (U.R) R. H. Bal dock, state highway engineer; told Oregon Highway Lifesavers Inc., yesterday that failure of passage of an adequate federal road bill was costing Oregon from $60,000,000 to $75,000,000 a year. Baldock said the loss results from accidents, lost time and freight and fuel charges. "There are powerful interests striving to defeat passage of leg islation to - build the proposed great interstate system of high ways," Baldock said. The people must speak out "decisively" to get the system built, he added. Eugene (U.R) W. C. Williams, deputy, state highway engineer, told the Eugene Register-Guard here yesterday that if pending Congressoinal road legislation is approved this year, construction of a four-lane super highway connecting Eugene and Salem would get underway within three years. . r Williams said that the legisla tion, calling for a 13-year, $51, 000,000,000 federal aid fund for highway- financing, would be highly beneficial to Oregon. He added that he was optimistic that some type of highway leg islation would be passed by this congress. . .. : He said the survey for reloca tion of Highway 99 from Eugene to Albany, is "nearly completed."'- ' - second of the President's broth ers to predict that he will seek a second term. Last Thursday, Mr. Eisenhow er's older brother, Edgar, said in El Centro, Calif., that "I think he will run." No Inside Information . Earl Eisenhower, who is younger than the President and is public relations director for a chain of Chicago suburban news papers, emphasized he has no "inside information." But he said "it looks to me as if Dwight will seek a second term." "There is nothing in his let ters -to indicate that he either will or will not run," Earl Eisen hower said. "It is simply my own opinion that he will." If the choice was his, the brother said, "I'd retire to that farm at Gettysburg or switch to some other job. After all, he has served his country now for 45 years. That's a mighty long time." Earl Eisenhower said he be lieves his brother will decide on the basis of whether he thinks he is still needed in the White House. ' " . The decision is his alone to make, Earl Eisenhower said, and the President will not be influ enced by anything his brothers have to say. "I doubt whether he'd listen to us if we tried to sell him any thing," he said. Edgar Eisenhower also based his belief that the President will run again on his knowledge of how his brother's mirid works and his sense of duty. Mother Explains Thefts by Boy Fort Worth, Tex. The typical Eisenhower meth od of discussing his great per sonal problem with the the voters would be to face them on television to tell them all about it what the doctors said, the weight he gives their judgment, how he feels when he gets up in the morning and' before he goes to bed at night. Above all, Mr. Eisenhower would want to report on his own feelings as he put himself, day by day, through the test of physical exertion in Georgia. Mr. Eisenhower could end such a report with the simple statement that he felt up to an other four years if the party and people want him. At that point, the telegraph . and telephone wires "would begin to zing-zing with "We-Want-Ike" messages, and the draft would be on. But it would not be an announce ment of his candidacy. Cemetery Clean Up Day Postponed at GH uold Hill Clean up day at Rock Point cemetery has been postponed because of bad weath er, according to Mrs. A. A. Walk er, member of the improvement committee. Clean up day was to be Saturday, Feb. 25. Weather permitting, another day will be designated later, Mrs. Walker said. Troubles Threaten Closure of Giro's Hollywood U.R) Ciro's long one of the top Sunset Strip night spots for Hollywood's stars and free spending tourists, may close May 26. Herman Hover, who has oper ated the night spot since 1942, said he would close Ciro's on that date unless he wins a talent booking court fight against two agencies. "I haven't officially announced it yet, because I'm leaving a door open for possible continuation of operations," Hover said. "But the way it looks now I'm giving Up." Hover said business never has been better but the night club act department of the Music Cor poration of America and Wil liam Morris Agency are making it difficult for him to get top flight acts for the club. i - "And that's only part of the story," he said.
