Washington (U.PJ The special Senate committee creat ed to investigate lobbying may try to get some reforms written into law before the November elections, an authoritative source said today. : One prospective committee member who would not be iden tified said the group would try to report on some features of its investigation in time for : Con gress to pass new laws govern ing fall campaign. Botn Democrats and Republi cans were expected to have their choices for the eightanati" "conv mittee ready for submission to the Senate today. The Senate set up the special committee by a 79-1 vote Wednesday, giving it broad powers to investigate any and all attempts to influ ence the Senate, any senator, Senate candidate or government employee "improperly or illeg gally." . Leaders Accept Change The resolution creating the committee reached the floor cov ered only attempts to influence senators But Senate Democrat ic Leader Lyndon B.- Johnson (Texas) and Republican Leader William F. Knowland (Calif.), both oi whom backed the mea sure, quickly accepted amend ments expanding the field of in quiry to cover candidates for the Senate and any officials or employees . of the . executive branch. Goldwater, (Ariz.), Arthur V. Watkins, (Utah) and Karl E. Mundt (S.D.). However, Watkins and Mundt told reporters they were unav ailable. Creation of the special com-: mittee was an outgrowth of Senate consideration of the bill to exempt independent natural gas producers from direct feder al price regulation. Sen. Francis Case ,(R-S.D.), touched off a fur or by announcing Feb. 3 that he was switching his vote to oppose the Dill' because a lawyer offer ed $2,500 to his campaign fund on the supposition that he would vote for the measure; TO OTJIT DOUGLAS POST RoseDtirg (U.R) Brig. All that doctors have been able to do is establish that the victims have not :, died of poisoning, heart trouble, acute indigestion, and other maladies that might at first glance explain their deaths: Coroners have no choice but to attribute death to "causes un known" or resort to the explana tion heard among some Filipinos, that death is due to "bang-utot," translated loosely as the disease in which men "dream themselves to death." ' Hundreds Die - Dr. Nils P. Larsen, a Honolulu physician, has estimated that 130 Filipino men died in this mys terious manner in Hawaii in the past 25 years. Dr. Mariano B. Lara, medical .' examiner in Ma nila, says he runs across 'about a dozen cas'es a' year. Larsen, who has been practic ing in Hawaii for 30 years, has suggested that the deaths may be the result of fear, a fear so power ful it stops circulation of the blood. This would explain cer tain hemorrhage-conditions dis closed in autopsies he has con ducted on the bodies of many vic tims. '. -:- ' r.. V:. "' 'Could this mean the victims of "nightmare disease" have dreams so horrifying that their hearts literally stop : beating? Larsen says he doesn't know. Plastic heart collection boxes have been placed in various pub lic places but are expected to bring only a small portion of the money needed from the Medf ord area, Mrs. Bigalow said. ' Contributions are used to sup port research, education . and community service programs for the Oregon Heart association, an affiliate o fthe American Heart association. Among recent ben efits of scientific research by the American association has been the development of new knowl edge on the use of "strep"-killing drugs to knock out throat infec tions which may cause rheumatic fever, an ailment that sometimes develops into' rheumatic heart disease.. The disease has become one of childhood's greatest enemies, and children can be guarded by prompt attention to control strep infection, she said. Heart Sunday is Medford's principal fund raising project. Bigham Reelected Head of Loan Group J. W.- Bigham, Eagle Point, was reelected president of the Southern Oregon'National Farm Loan association "at ah , annual meeting recently in Gold Hill. Oliver H. Roundtree, Williams, was reelected vice - president. Other board members are A. E. Stevens, Phoenix; W. C. Higin botham, Central. Point; and Al bert Straus, Sams valley. Guest speakers . at the meet ing were- Fred A. Knutsen, pres ident of the federal land bank of Spokane, and C. D. Putz, regional manager of the Spokane bank. Knutson told members at the meeting that 1955 was a record year for the use of land bank services. He outlined the pro gram in which the bank pays dividends to borrower members. . Under the farm credit act of 1955 loan limits were extended from $100,000 to $200,000; fam ily corporations were made elig ible to borrow; and the base upon which credit may be ex tended to part-time farmers was broadened, Knutsen said.
