Tuesday, February 21, 1956 Science Reports First Glimmer Of Breakthrough in Cancer Front By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (U.R) What could be the first glimmer of a break-through on the cancer front was reported to the world of science today. Two distin guished scientists revealed they were controlling the growth of a particular kind of cancer in chick embryos inside eggs with "substantial success." Drs. Alfred Taylor and Roger J. Williams of the University of Texas hedged their revelations with scientific care but suspect ed that successful cancer investi gation "may. take a course in volving first the control of can cer in embryonated eggs, second its control in experimental ani mals, and lastly its control in human patients." First Step ' If that proves to be so, the first step has now been taken, they reported in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sci ences. By combining ant i-cancer chemicals with an increased tem perature, they stopped the growth oi a mouse mammary tumor without interfering with the normal growth of the chick embryo enclosed in the same egg. ..
