The "trouble" to which the

was nothing that Dr. Hermann

His "mercy-slaying" case was
probably the most voluminous

About two-thirds of the way

"I thought I remembered
your face," said the doctor. He
is an extremely friendly sort of
man with piercing blue eyes and
a straight, rather thin nose. At
47, he is slim, face tanned.
Would he have time for a talk
later on?
"Lord I'm too busy," he said.

Science Reports First Glimmer
Of Breakthrough in Cancer Front
By DELOS SMITH
United Press Science Editor
New York (U.R) What
could be the first glimmer of a
break-through on the cancer
front was reported to the world
of science today. Two distin
guished scientists revealed they
were controlling the growth of
a particular kind of cancer in
chick embryos inside eggs with
"substantial success."
Drs. Alfred Taylor and Roger
J. Williams of the University of
Texas hedged their revelations
with scientific care but suspect
ed that successful cancer investi
gation "may. take a course in
volving first the control of can
cer in embryonated eggs, second
its control in experimental ani
mals, and lastly its control in
human patients."
First Step '
If that proves to be so, the
first step has now been taken,
they reported in the proceedings
of the National Academy of Sci
ences. By combining ant i-cancer
chemicals with an increased tem
perature, they stopped the
growth oi a mouse mammary
tumor without interfering with
the normal growth of the chick
embryo enclosed in the same
egg.
.. Their . successful experiments
were repeatable, which is an
acid test. This experiment they

Eggs Opened
On the 16th incubation day,
all eggs were opened. In all the

the embryos had been killed by
the growing cancers, and the
one survivor contained a ' large
