New York (U.R) The un defeated San Francisco Dons led the United Press college basket ball latings today for the 12th straight -week but Illinois re planed Dayton in the runner-up spot and all except one of the Grants Pass Ring Will Be Fenced Grants Pass The feud be tween Wild Bill Savage and Bull Montana is not over. They have been signed for another show down battle this Wednesday night at the local wrestling arena. At the insistence of Savage, the ring will be fenced in to keep Montana in the ring. The two rugged matadors and the referee will enter the ring and a wire fence will be closed .up so that nobody can leave the ring until the match is over. Promoter Elton Owen admit ted that he was not in favor of this sort of thing but finally agreed to the fence when the althletic commission okayed it. Side Bet Posted Savage had posted S100 as a side bet with the Bull that he can beat him if he can keep him inside of the ring. Both of their previous . matches have ended on the floor. Montana demanded a fat guarantee for this one but still insists that he can beat Savage in or out of the ring. It was a vicious brawl last week' with Montana scampering out of the ring several times to slow down the rugged attack of Savage. Rito Romero was unable to get a ramatch against popular Bill Fletcher' but will be on hand to meet the elusive and talented Scotty Williams in the one hour semi final. The 35-leading coaches who make up the United Press rating board gave San Francisco 29 first place votes and a total of 337 points. The Dons stretched their vic tory streak to 46 games and their season record to 20-0 last week with victories over San Jose State and St. Mary's (Calif.) but '.hey received one less first place vote' and two less points than in the previous week's bal loting. Illinois (16-1) made the most impressive gain when the ballot ing produced new positions for each of the other nine leading teams except sixth place Van derbilt. ' Doubled First Vofes The Illini, 9-0 in Big Ten com petition, advanced from third to second following their impres sive road triumph at Michigan State Saturday. They doubled their first place votes from two to four and their point total went from 276 to 307, only 30 points behind San Francisco. United Press Sports Writer Adolph Rupp's Kentucky Wild eats, emulating those frisky thoroughbreds in the blue grass country, were making a strong stretch run today for the South eastern Conference basketball championship and its automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. . The Ruppmen pulled into sec ond place in the conference race Monday night by whipping Van derbilt, 76-55, while front-run ning. Alabama turned back Louisiana State, 77-59. That left Alabama with a 10-0 league record, Kentucky 10-1 and most of their followers pant ing for tickets for their Satur day night showdown battle, at Montgomery) Ala. Illini Dump Boilermakers . In the Big Ten Conference, Illinois downed Purdue, 102-77, for its -16th straight triumph but Iowa remained on the Illini's heels but out-lasting Iowa, 87-83, on ' two-pointers by Bill Logan and Bill Seaberg in the' final minute. , . Two tournament-bound teams, meanwhile, suffered humiliating defeats. (U.R) Univer sity of Idaho students were re ported to be distributing peti tions asking that Al Lightner, Pacific Coast Conference basketball-official, be banned from refereeing Idaho home games. A spokesman said today the petitions are the result of a dis pute between Lightner and Idaho fans concerning the officiating of the Idaho-Washington week end games. v The argument ensued between the fans and the referee on the way to the official's dressing room after Saturday night's game. Earlier in the season, Lightner forfeited the California- Southern California game after students threw pennies on the iloor.
