As I have said be fore, when a person has a severe lower backa c h e, es pecially when he has to limp or use a cane, and when per haps he walks bent over to natter Alvarez One Side, . the chances are' that he has a dis placed disc and not an ordinary backache due to arthritis -of the spine.' What often makes the di agnosis hard is that a man who has some arthritis of the spine, has also a displaced disc. Many persons say to me, "I have been advised to have an op eration, but I hesitate to go ahead because my neighbor had one, and he didn't get any better." His trouble may have been that the diagnosis was wrong, and he really, did not have a displaced disc. It. is extremely important that before an operation is per formed, a good diagnosis be made by an expert. What is un fortunate is that this diagnosis is sometimes so difficult that even experts can be wrong. For instance; I was just read ing an article by W. E. Stern, of Portland, Ore., who reported the results obtained by 175 patients who were operated on for pain which looked like that due to a displaced disc. At operation on 163 the displaced disc was found, but in 12 it was not found. Dr. Stern then went back over the records to see if he could find what was peculiar about the stories and findings of the pa tients who had the symptoms and pre-operative findings of a disi but no disc at operation. Some Signs of Injury ; As he said, most of the' pa tients suffered from back pain, pain in a thigh and leg, and lim itation of movement of the back. They felt pain when the doctor raised the thigh on one side with the leg extended (straight) at the knee, and they had some signs of injury to a nerve as shown by a numb place on one leg. In all but one of the cases an x-rav study of the spinal canal was made after the injection of some material. There were a few cases in which the x-ray man thought he saw trouble and yet it was not found at operation. In other cases ' the x-ray man could not see anything wrong, and a dis placed disc was found at oper ation. . - ; . " . n some cases the diagnosis was fairly definite from the his tory of sudden severe stabbing pain that ran down the back of the thigh. This came perhaps with the lifting of a trunk in the attic. I have seen persons who suffered from much sudden pain in one thigh and leg, and who became so weak that they fell to the floor. Occasionally, the patient comes in in a wheel chair or on crutches, and then one can be pretty sure that something is seriously wrong. The other day, going down the hall in my office building, I saw a woman ahead of me walking bent 'way over to one ,'side. She was obviously in great pain, and leaning heavily on her husband's shoulder. She pretty certainly had a displaced disc. Would Want Thorough Test As I have said before, if I had such symptoms I would want to have a thorough examination by an expert neurologist; I would like to talk to an ; expert on arthritis, and I would probably ask an able x-ray man to meet air or something into my spinal column to see if he could demon strate a disc projecting back ward and pressing on some of Russian Press Tells Of Attack on Stalin Moscow (U.R) The ' Russian press and radio told the Soviet people and the world Saturday of ' a sharp, unprecedented at tack on Joseph Stalin made by Deputy First Premier Anastas Mikoyan before a gathering of the leaders of the Communist world. - All newspapers and Moscow Radio carried the monumental address before the Soviet Com munist Party Congress which confirmed the revolutionary transformation in Soviet ideol ogy since, Stalin's death almost three years ago. Then I'd like to talk to an expert surgeon who has operated, on many - slipped discs. He might feel so sure about the situation that he would be willing to go ahead and operate, or he might say, "I'm . not absolutely sure about you. Better take it easy for a while and see if the trouble will quiet down." The last time I wrote in this column about the great difficulty that great and distinguished ex perts sometimes have in diagnos ing correctly a displaced disc, a number 'of people wrote, to say, "Don't be silly: Go to ah adver tising quack; he'll cure you in a minute." Which is like saying, If the able electrician from the telephone company has trouble getting your telephone to work, or finding what is wrong with it, get the grocer's boy: He'll fix it!" at In any further proof is needed that Shadey Wake field is the red bioodest of, red blooded American boys, here it is.
