1 Second Section MEDFORD MEDFORD, Washington's Necessity of By A. ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Correspondent , Washington It seemed like an , innocent enough remark when he made it, but Sen. Hen ry M. Jackson (D.-Wash.) learn ed that a man especially a bachelor politician must weigh every syllable during Leap Year. Right out loud before a na tional television audience Jack son allowed as how he was "available." And ever since, gals from' every section of the coun try have been leaping at the senator's handsome head. When you get right down to the heart of it, this all just shows what a politician gets himself ' into when he tries to dodge the issue. He was being asked by reporters on a TV show what he thought of Sen. Mike Mans field's idea that Jackson would make a good vice - presidential candidate for the Democrats. "Are you available?" inquir ed a reporter soberly. "Sure," replied Jackson with a big Scandinavian grin, "I'm available . , . for marriage." Females No!. Confused I that successfully confused the reporters about the issue of the vice-presidency, it , didn't cause any confusion among fe males in the audience who know a good, if elusive, 44 -year -old catch when they see one. : As a consequence, the letters began coming in from all over the country and now Scoop has a fairly wide range of selection if he is still available. There is, for example, Jeanne from Miami, Fla., who sent along a snapshot of herself sprawled across her bed in an evening gown. She called herself "Wolf No. 1." "Don't you know better than to advertise for a wife. The wolves will be after you,", she said. - Claudia of Parkersburg, W.Va., was less forward. She'd ' send a photo only if he was in -LAXJ OREGON, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1956 Senator Jackson Learns Weighing Leap Year Words terested. Senator Shies Away All -this Leap Year aggressive ness semed to be taking its toll on Jackson's earlier mood of availability. Digging through his assortment of proposals, some from maidens a shade older than himself, the senator shied farther and farther away from any possible romances. - : "I'm taking all this by tend ing to my committee work," said Jackson. "And I've got by early warning radar system turned on to let me know when the dan gers of Leap -Year are approacn ing." . While the matrimonial bug has bitten five of Jackson's of fice staff members in the past year or more, it has yet to give the senator romantic fever.
