EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Friday, February 17, 1956 Appropriations Committee Votes Funds To Triple Par!c Construction I'Jork Leaders Cautioned On Responsibility 01 Conservation Washington U.R) The House Appropriations Commit tee, concerned at overcrowding and deterioration in the national . parks, put up enough funds to day to almost triple construction work in the parks. . At the same time the Demo cratic controlled committee cau tioned administration leaders they have "no greater respon sibility" than to assure conser vation and effective use of na tural resources administered by the Interior Department. The committee voted $15,000, 000 for construction of public facilities in the parks in the 12 montns starting July 1, against $5,200,000 requested by Presi dent Eisenhower and compareq with $5,425,000 to be spent in the current fiscal year. Disregard Request The committee disregarded a supplemental request from the President Feb. 2 boosting his original request for park con struction work from S5,200,000 to $13,550,000. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan (D-O.), chairman of a subcommittee that drafted the money bill, told a reporter this request came only after the sub committee indicated it was go ing to put up extra funds. The funds were included in a $415,963,200 money bill approv ed by the committee to run the Interior Department and related agencies in fiscal 1957. The total was $10,785,000 less than the President wanted but $79,067, 753 more than was made avail , able for fiscal 1956. In its report to the House, the committee said funds spent on conservation and park functions of the Interior Department are ''almost inconsequential" al though the work is vital. The money bill covers all In terior Department agencies ex cept the Bureau of Reclamation, Bonneville Power Administra tion, Southwestern Power Ad ministration, and Southeastern Power Administration. Funds for these" functions will be in cluded in a separate public works bill- On Major Reduction j The committee gave the Na- j tional Parks Service,: toverall,'; $67,688,000 of $4,025,000 less j than the .President's Duaget re quest but $22,658,700 more than the service was given to spend this year. : The only cut, which more than offset, the increase for park con struction work, was in the out right elimination of a $13,825, .000 item sought for construction of a new Jones Point bridge across the Potomac river from Virginia into Washington. The committee said with bet ter highways and added leisure hours the park load is increased by 2,000,000 persons yearly, and that 54,000,000 visitors are ex pected in the national parks and monuments during the new fis cal year. . Except for the park construc lon work the committee gave the President just what he asked, or a little less. Other Allocations The Bureau of Land Manage ment got $22,500,000, $778,000 less than the budget request but $6,500,000 more than this year. The Bureau of Indian Affairs got $85,590,000 or $3,600,000 less than the budget but $8,597,502 more than this year. The Bureau of Mines was al lowed $21,697,300, a budget cut of $2,000,000. For the Fish and Wildlife Service the committee allowed the full sum requested, $17,813,500. The Commission of Fine Arts got $31,000, as re quested. For the Forest Service of the Agriculture Department, includ ed in the Interior Bill because of related function, the committee put up $96,773,000 as recom mended.
