Mr. Rascher's first number was an "Adagio, and Samba'Lby Maurice C. Whitney. This com position was written for Rascher and dedicated to him. It is an interesting piece in the modern idiom, not. very complex, with all the dexterity demanded of. the solo instrument The band accompanied Mr. Rascher very well. At times covering the solo ist, although playing softly, it proved once again that 'the "mealy" tone of a saxophone keeps it from rightfully being classed as a solo instrument. And this peculiar tone bars it from membership 'in a- symphony orchestra. After intermission, accom panied by Karen Fischer, the soloist displayed a fine musician ship and artistry of phrasing that was a pleasure to hear. His tran scriptions of work by Haendel were expertly fashioned. We were not impressed by the suite by Tcherepnin. Mr. Rascher claims to be the "Paganini of the saxophone." That presupposes a phenomenal technique but your reviewer, who, has heard Rudy Wiedoft, must take issue with this claim. Wiedoft was decidedly more brilliant. Rascher's tone is sweet and true but lacks the great warmth of Clyde Doerr. However, he is probably the best one today, j The band closed the concert with selections by Sibelius, Evans-Cailliet and King. Very nicely in time, too. , . 'i Thanks should be extended to Mr. Fischer . for bringing Mr. Rascher to the valley. We can not have too many first-rate ar tists. Those who stayed away from the concert cheated them selves.
