Joseph H. Perry and Maj. Sam Berman were playing chess in the upstairs "ready room." "Whose move?" Berman asked.- "Yours, you knucklehead," Perry answered. "It has been for an hour and a half." The scene could have been in any officer's club, except for the fact that the two jet pilots were wearing their flight suits and had their crash helmets next to them. Perry and Berman were on the "alert watch" at 82nd Flight Interceptor Squadron headquar ters here. Siren Breaks Calm As they -good naturedly ribbed ' each other over chess a shrill siren broke the twilight calm and the two men grabbed their helmets, clomped down a flight of stairs and' jumped into their flight-ready F86D jet fighters. Radar stations in the area had reported an unidentified aircraft . and it was the two pilots' job to ; find it as fast as possible. 'The second the siren sounded ground crews ran to the two planes and had the jet engines started with a "booster" motor before Perry and Berman could get their oxygen masks adusted. Less than five minutes later, the sleek, silver jets boomed off the runway 60 seconds apart in pursuit of the unidentified plane. An hour later they were back on the ground. "Just some commercial jocko who got lost," Perry said. "But we can't afford to take chances." The fighter intercept squadron here, which the 35-year-old Per ry commands, is part of the Air Defense Command. Its job: To maintain a 24-hour,, seven-day guard against the possibility of an enemy bomber trying to make a sneak attack on this country. Playing For Keeps "We're not ' playing games Britain Continues Arms To Mideast London (U.R) Britain will continue arms shipments' to the Mideast for the time being, the Foreign Office disclosed today. The abrupt American suspen sion of arms shipments to the Middle East appeared to have caught the British government by complete surprise. The Foreign Office learned of the Washington move in halting a shipment of tanks to Saudi Arabia from press . reports this morning. There was po immediate indi cation when or if Britain would follow the American lead. Rather, a spokesman told' re porters at the midday Foreign Office news conference that Brit ain's policy on Mideast arms sup ply remains "unchanged." ;' Britain's policy was defined only two weeks .ago in Parlia ment by. Minister of . State An thony Nutting. Nutting said that, Britain in tended to continue supplying arms to the ; Arab states and Israel for "legitimate self de fense, internal security and de fense of the area as a whole." - Evansville, Ind. XU.R) Jewler Paur Forston was noti fied he was the winner of a two week vacation in Bermuda for selling the .most hearing aids in in a recent contest Forston had not been aware a contest was be ing held. here," Perry said. "This is for keeps." " The twin forces of Strategic Air Command bombers, capable of becoming airborne and ready for attack within three hours, and the Air Defense Command jets, geared to go after hostile bombers in less than five min utes, give the United States the most deadly and efficient pro tection possible. : Travis Air Force Base ranks as one of the nation's best on both counts. - : Stevenson Attacks Nixon's Statement Boise, Ida. (U.R) Adlai Stevenson said yesterday Vice President Richard M. Nixon's recent reference to the Supreme Court decision of "our great Re publican Chief Justice", was a "very calculated statement." Nixon, in a speech in New York, mentioned the past polit ical affiliations of Chief Justice Earl Warren in lauding the high court's ruling in favor of deseg regation of public schools. The court's opinion was written by Warren. In a press conference prior to leaving for speeches in Salt Lake City, Stevenson said he was "shocked" by the remark Land called it a "very calculated statement." - Asked if he thought President Eisenhower should "take the vice-president in tow," the Dem ocratic presidential aspirant said "I shan't take to advising him." In an address here last night, Stevenson called Nixon an "all purpose politician" who uses "socialism" as an all purpose word to slam the gains rnade by the Democratic party. More than 1,000 hefty women wore a hope ful path between their mirrors and bathroom scales today as they determinedly trimmed off unwanted pounds. The . overweight housewives and career girls were slimming down in a YMCA weight-losing derby touched off a month ago by a calorie-loaded "final fling" banquet. -Breeze For Som YMCA officials said reports at the half-way point indicated the beefy , ladies would lose - more than three and one-half tons be fore the reducing course ends next month. , For some, . the avoirdupois strip-tease was going excruciat ingly slow. Hal Gibbs, chairman of the pro gram, found reason for optimism in the postcard reports reaching his desk. .. "It's coming off, slowly but surely," he said. Twenty-two of the hefties, serving as pacesetters in the mass onslaught against unbecoming excess poundage, lived it up Jan. 16 at a glorious, 2,200-calorie dinner of no-no's like creanv of mushroom soup, avocado salad with cottage cheese and : dress ing, and vanilla ice cream sun dae with ' chocolate topping, whipped cream and cherry. Average Loss Eight Pounds' " Then they climbed aboard the calorie wagon, pledging to re strict themselves to a measly 1200-1400 calories daily. . , . Today the YMCA said 18 of the 22 had lost 148 pounds, an average of more than eight pounds each. The other four had slipped into obscurity or off .the wagon.-; : .. .:':': ;.
