SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE" Friday February 17, 1956 Yuba City Prepares To Hold Christmas Observance Feb. 25 - Yuba City (U.R) Only seven more shopping days until Christ mas in Yuba City. Christmas will come on- Feb. 25 for the 10,000 persons here who were cheated out of their regular yuletide by a disastrous flood of the Feather river last Dec' 24. It will be Christmas in every way, regardless of what the cal endar says. There will be special Coos Bay May Get Ammunition Depot Coos Bay (U.R) Coos Bay area officials were busy testing public response today to the pos sibility that the Navy, might move its Chicago, Calif., ammu nition depot to Coos Bay. The depot, which employes 850 ciyilians in addition to serv ice personnel, lias been asked ,to m6ve out because the 4500. addi tional acres needed for the depot would wipe out potential indus trial sites. Sen. Richard Ix Neuberger D. Ore. - asked city, county and Chamber of Commerce officials yesterday to check public re sponse and gather economic data to support any bid for' the project.'- - - The Oregon Democrat said State Sen'.' George Miller of Cali fornia had asked him to check possible Oregon sites forthe pro ject which uses 6500 acres now and needs an; additional 4500 acres. : Navy sources said the depot does not manufacture ammuni tion. But with the help of outsiders the Christmas spirit has been re kindled in Yuba City, The idea was born in four Southern Cali fornia Lions clubs and spread rapidly throughout the state. Lions At Work Lions at Lynwood, Huntington Park, South Gate and Compton, all in the Los Angeles area, be gan making plans for the event while the Christmas gifts Yuba Cityans never had a chance to open, were still floating in the fl6od waters around the town. Youngsters who spent Dec. 25 in emergency shelters scattered throughout Northern California, in many cases separated -. from their families, .will - have their Christmas party' in a huge tent brought up from Hollywood. The San Francisco Lions will present a vaudeville show. Lions at Su sanville arranged to truck in a load of Christmas trees. 3 ' THOMAS L. CLARK Victim of Initiation? Singer Billy Daniels To Face Grand Jury New York U.R) A Manhat tan Grand Jury has indicted singer Billy Daniels on five counts involving the shooting of a fight trainer in a bottle club Jan. 31, it. was learned yester day. Daniels, currently in Palm Springs, Calif., singing in night clubs said he would return to New York to fight the indict ments. . ' The indictment includes two charges of second degree as sault, two charges of violation of the state weapons law,' and one charging that Daniels fired a gun in a public place. The charges grew out of the wounding of James Jackson, 33, in the Seven-One-Ten club dur ing a row. Jackson told police he didn't know who shot him but police arrested Daniels later that day after they learned he had been in the club. v Reservoir Dragged For Body of Young College Freshman Cambridge, Mass. U.R) Vol unteer drivers, dynamiters and scores of students converged to day on an ice-blocked reservoir where a missing fraternity "pledge" is believed drowned. Darkness and bitter cold winds halted dragging operations last night for the body, of Thomas L. Clark, 18, son of a Harvey, HI., business executive. The student vanished Friday during a frater nity initiation stunt. - Earlier yesterday a shoe and a white scarf found imbedded in the snow - encrusted Cambridge reservoir were identified by the missing youth's father, .Alfred R. Clark. - "My boy had a scarf exactly like that," the father said. '-'I am certain those are his things." The elder Clark, who had waited tensely all day for news of his son, collapsed into a chair. "This never should have hap pened' he said. "How could they allow, such a thing? What were they thinking of?" . Police said they were certain that the missing Massachusetts Institute of Technology fresh man fell through, the ice when he attempted to cross the reser voir at night. He had been dumped blindfolded out of an automobile by upperclassmen and told to "use your own re sources" to find his way back 12 miles to the fraternity, house. Police said they would not eliminate the possiblity of foul play. District Attorney Ephraim T. Martin said that "when and if the body is found there will be an inquest." ' When the President first visit ed Humphrey in 1954, Hagerty , insisted before the party arrived m-Thomasville that the Humph rey place most certainly was not a plantation, but a farm. Hagerty thought the word plantation carried with an implication of luxury. -But when the presidential motorcade rolled up to the gates of the place, Hagerty could not escape seeing a large stone pil lar on which was engraved, "Milestone Plantation." Jim shouldn't worry, however. Just about everything over five acres in this part of the country is called a plantation. One of the more opulent places in Humphrey's neighbor hood is the estate of John. ' Jacques and Ginger apparent ly have a successful marriage, despite cynics who had predicted the combination wouldn t last. 'He was under contract to MGM for a year while he stud ied English. When the studio couldn't come up with a suitable role, he says, he quit. He and Ginger costarred in one movie' made abroad, "Twist of Fate. Then he appeared in a play in Paris and decided he must act alone until he is "established." He even refused to pose; for CBS-TV publicity photographs with Ginger.
