TWO -MEDFORD (OREGON) Society and Clubs Spring Flower Show School Dates Announced by Chairman The spring flower show school of Siskiyou district, Oregon Federation of Garden clubs will be held April 18, 19 and 20. The school was planned in order that interested gardeners in this dis trict could be trained as flower show judges, and this is the third section. ' It is pointed out that previous ly the classes had been an nounced as opening one day earlier. The school will be held in the Central Point Grange hall. Horticulture instruction will be on natice plants and judging instruction will be on tulips, early iris and camellias. Books to read are "Wild Flowers in Your Garden" by Helen Hull, and Chapter 16 and 44 in "Women's Home Companion Book" by Wis ter. Flower show practice will be on staging, and the duties of the Judges. Those planning to attend are also to study pages 11 to 14 on staging, and Chapter 4 on judging in the "Handbook for Flower Shows." Flower arranging instruction will be on design, with emphasis on scale, proportion, color and analagous harmony. Books to read in preparation for this, are "Color in Flower Arrangement" by Wilson and "Color Notation" by Munsell. . The course is open to the gen eral public but only federated club members may take the ex amination. Members who have OES Grand Officer To Visit Chapters Wednesday Night. Members of Reames ad Alpha chapters, Order of Eastern Star, will meet in the Ashland Ma sonic temple Wednesday, Febru ary 15. m a joint session ar ranged for the visit of the asso ciate grand matron, Mrs.'. Fred E. Burton, Portland. A potluck dinner is set for 6:30 p.m., and will be followed by a school of instruction at 8 p.m. Mrs. Burton is to - arrive in Ashland about noon, and will be a guest of Mrs. Lorena McNair, a former grand matron and pres-1 ent grand historian for Oregon. ajleys Sold Exclusively at . . . Valentine Dance Planned at Club Plans are being completed this week for a velentine formal dance at Rogue Valley Country club set for Saturday, February 18. General chairmen are Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Doran and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rector. The evening will open with cocktails at 8 p.m., followed by hors d'oeuvres and dinner. Two dance bands will furnish music, one in the main room and the other in the lower lounge. - Decorations will be done with Mr. and Mrs. Del Wright in charge, and table decorations and others will be furnished by Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Fisher and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Heysell. are handling invitations. The event is for club members and houseguests. Wisely Family Now in Hawaii Mrs. Duane Wisely and three children, formerly of Medford, recently joined Mr. Wisely in Honolulu, T.H., where he is sta tioned with the .Navy. Mrs. Wisely and the couple's children had been making their home at Mountlake Terrace in Washing ton. r-. Mrs. Paul Molloy announced a valentine- coffee to be held at her home, The Oaks Motel, on Tuesday. Proceeds will, go into the PTA budget. . Gilbert Mack, principal, an nounced a fund-raising chili supper which will be - served Friday evening, March 2, in the school cafeteria. Also on . that date residents will vote on the names for the Gold Hill grade schools the present one and the one under construction. ' Mrs. Paul Throne, school cafeteria cook, reported on the present status of the afternoon milk program and requested fi nancial support of parents in carrying out this program. H. D. Force presented a reso lution requesting a government survey of flood damage in this area, and the formulating of effective flood control measures. It was endorsed by the unit. Room count was won by Mrs. Lois Stabler's fourth grade. Following the business meet ing Mrs. Hixson gave a report on the meaning of Founders' day and the aims of the PTA. Past presidents of the local unit were presented Valentine cor sages. Those present were Mrs. Floyd Lance, Mrs. Cecil John son, Mrs. Lester Parker, , Mrs. Norman Gail and Mrs. Melf ord Hood. Grade school children under the direction of Charles Cook, band director, played several musical selections. Dunham, a Lakeview farm wife and mother of four, has been named Oregon's Mo ther of 1956. Mrs. Dunham, who never went to high school, saw to it that her four children were not denied the right to an educa tion. She will now represent Oregon in the National finals for the title of American moth er." - " ;, Mrs. Dunham, 5?, was born in Brown City, Mich., and has lived in Lakeview since . 1940. Mrs. Howard Bush, historian, presented some background of the early days of the organiza tion, comparing their problems and goals to those of the pres ent. - - - ' A trio composed ; of Mrs. H. D. Christensen, Mrs. Robert J. Cunningham and Mrs. John C. Collins sang three ; selections. Mrs. Otto Frohnmayer was ac companist. During the business meeting, at which Mrs. Lesseg presided, it was voted to increase the scholarship fund from $120 to $150 per year. This increase cov ers the rise in school tuition dur ing the past year. Members elec ted to the nominating committee were Mrs. Lee , Mellish, Mrs. valentine theme. . Mr. Cordy also spoke for the January meeting of the club, substituting for Don Berry. Mr. Cordy spoke on "Espaliered Trees and Shrubs." The two meeting topics are related, since espaliered shrubs and trees are largely the result of pruning at regular intervals. : Not all plants lend themselves to this type of growing, but good examples are pyracantha, dwarf apple, pear, plum and similar trees. In Europe this is an accepted way of growing fruit trees but in this county it is used mostly by home gardeners. Mrs. Warren Holbrook gave an informative . talk on " the flower of the month, the orchid, and Hawaii, where many orchids are native. Plans were discussed for the club's first flower show, to be held next fall. Mrs. Don Bergman' and Mrs. Tom Smith were guests, and Mrs. Smith plans to become a member of the eroun. Co-host esses were Mrs. Holbrook and Mrs. Henry Friesan. Medford Couple In California Mr. and. Mrs. J. E. Collins left by plane Saturday for Riverside, Calif.,- where Sunday they at tended the 50th wedding anni versary observance of longtime friends, Mr. and . Mrs. A. B West. The Collins, until the past few years, lived in Riverside. The Wests plan to be here, later in the year to attend 50th wed ding anniversary observances for the Collins. The Medford couple will spend some time at Palm Springs before returning home by car by way of Carmel and San Francisco. - . ... The small chapel of St. Mark's Episcopal church will be used for the Thursday observ ance. As is the custom, the several churches. affiliated will meet at designated hours of the day.
