TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, February 8, 195S Council Oil's Zone Change; Acts On Other Agenda items The Medford city council last night adopted several ordin ances, including one change of zone, vacation of an alley,-and calling public hearings 'on chang ing zones in the Laurelhurst ad dition. An ordinance was adopted changing from two . family to heavy industrial property owned by "Builder's Supply company, Clark st. and McAndrews rd. A hearing was held at the last ' meeting, but continued until last night to give the council an op portunity to inspect ths prop erty. . Councilmen pointed out that the area was' sold to Builder's Supply with the knowledge of what type business would be in stalled, but apparently there had been an oversight in zoning when the city was rezoned several-years ago. ,,' Non-Conforming Property The property had been non . conforming, which prohibited the company , from obtaining a permit to make necessary re-, pairs. -; Councilmen noted that whether or not the property was rezoned, the business would be conducted as it has been. Heavy industrial zone permits modifi cations of businesses located in that zone, councilmen pointed out. ' . " . Earlier. residents . from the area objected to the zone change on grounds it would create ad ditional inconveniences such as increased noise, - dust and de: creas'e value of property as resi dential sites in the area. An ordinance also was adopt ed vacating a north-south alley in the Edwards Place addition after nojme appeared at a pub lic hearing to oppose vacation. The alley ended at an east-wesV alley in the addition. ; The city maintained easement rights to a city storm sewer in the alley. Milk Ordinance Amended The . milk ordinance " was amended to provide pro rata' col lection fees. The change was requested by the Milk Producers league, - which voluntarily of fered to collect from members city license fees, to simplify the league's procedures. New " ac counts will be prp rated to the first of each ' year through the change, City Manager Robert Duff pointed out. Duff pointed out that by hav ing the league collect fees the city's collection would be simpli fied and should assure an almost 100 per cent collection,! Ordinances were adopted call ing for two public hearings on change of zones. Hearings will be held at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 21, at the regular council meeting One change is to commercial along West Main and Sixth sts in Morey's addition, and the other is changing zones from single family to commercial in the - recently annexed v Laurel hurst addition. The Laurelhurst addition zone changes have been recommended by the Medford planning commission . to serve the need of property owners in the area. . Accept Land for Road Another ordinance adopted accepted land for road and dedi cation of public use of Stevens st. Duff said records disclosed that part of the street was owned by the county, and the county court deeded the land to the city. Bids were awarded for gaso line, diesel oil and kerosene to L. G. McLaren of the Shell Oil company, and Tidewater asso ciated. McLaren's bid of 13.7 cents per gallon for diesel oil was low among seven bids. Tide water submitted bids of .2092 cents per gallon on truck and trailer delivery of regular gaso line, and .2421 cents per gallon for ethyl gasoline. Tidewater and the Texas company submit ted identical bids of .192 cents per gallon , on kerosene. ' The contract was awarded Tidewater because the company was low on two other bids. , The council passed an ordin ance approving the sale of two lots in Highland park addition for $1,300, which was obtained by the city through an assess ment foreclosure in 1924. Duff told the council the offer , was the best the city has ' received for the property. v Approve Statements . Pre-qualification of Warren Northwest, Inc.," arid Meyers D. Jones, 813 Minnesota ave., were approved by the council. Duff pointed out that Warren North west submitted pre-qualification statements for bidding on city projects this year, 'and Jones submitted pre-qualification state ments to bid on the East Side Fire station. . -t . The council approved assess ments on a lot basis for the Eastwood-Capital " ave. sanitary sew er. Jock - Fitzgerald, chairman of the council's finance commit tee, pointed out that the system was the most equitable among several systems considered. The council granted a request to remove three parking spaces on the west side of North Bart lett st. from Fourth st. ,to 150 feet north. The request was sub mitted by property owners who said they have furnished 12 off street parking spaces on their property, but that curb parking prohibited full use of the spaces: The change was . recommended by the traffic engineering depart ment. Requests Granted A request for 30-minute park ing in three spaces in front of the Dairy Freeze, 900 North Riverside ave., was granted. The businesses requested the change because- they are open evenings, and are unable to find parking facilities during the evening. The traffic engineering department recommended the change. The council also authorized Duff to negotiate for road right of way for extending East Jack son st. - Neuberger Urges Plug For Veto of Gas Bill Washington (U.R) Sen. Rich ard L. Elmo Smith and Portland Mayor Fred Peterson to urge President Ei senhower to veto the natural gas bill: The disputed bill , was passed by the senate Monday and by the house last summer. t pro vides for the relaxing of federal control over the price gas pro ducers may charge pipeline com panies that carry the fuel from well to consumer. The Oregon Democrat said yesterday that Oregon and Port land L were affected because . of the imminent arrival of natural gas in the state.
