Tell me how you sit and weave Dreams about me. though I know It Is only make believe. Alice Cary. Is there really such a thing as kiss-proof lipstick? Or is it still unavoidable to have kissing handicapped by cosmetics? At one time in Paris, in order to protect their makeup, women extended their necks to be kiss ed. The authority for this is none other than Benjamin Franklin. In a letter to a friend, Franklin wrote that French women, by way of greeting, extended their necks to be kissed. He added, "kissing the lips or cheeks is reckoned rude, and the other Salk Vaccine Use Urged for Firs! Shots Portland (U.P.) The State Board of Health yesterday rec ommended that supplies Salk anti-polio vaccine be used chief ly for the first and second shots during the next few weeks. Dr. Harold M. Erickson, state health officer, said that plan would permit more children to receive basic protection against polio before the peak of the 1956 season. Dr. Erickson said a backlog of 90,000 cc's of vaccine had been completely used up, but that additional shipments are expected daily. The health officer asked par ents of children needing "boost er"shots to wait a few weeks eo that more children may get their first shots. Four Lane County Men Seek Election Salem (U.R) Four members of the Lane county delegation yesterday filed for reelection to the Oregon House of Representa tives on the Republican ticket. They were Reps. Edwin V. Cone, Eugene; Loran L. Stewart, Cottage Grove; V. Edwin John eon, Eugene, and Earl H. Hill, Cushman. Stewart, - chairman of the house taxation committee in the 1955 legislature, has been men tioned as a possible candidate for speaker. However, he has made no announcement on the subject. "Over 21" is suffi cient. I believe all printed con tracts should be in large print. I think those large cartwheel shaped earrings make a woman conspicuous. And the wearing of anything that makes a woman conspicuous indicates a deplor able lack of style sense. I believe all race tracks should have $3 "across the board" combination tickets. Also, that all childen on reaching 16 should have the legal right to change the names their parents gave them. Espe cially children named Edgar. My view is that cats should be compelled to have licenses the same as dogs. Also canaries. I think Presidents of the United States should be elected for one term of six years and then not be eligible for reelection. Asking Queries from clients. Q. Why do you always write it "Atlan tic City, N.J.? The "N. J." is superfluous. There is only one Atlantic City and everybody knows it is in New Jersey. A. There is an Atlantic City in Wy oming . . . Q. I claim the French chief, Escoffier, originated melba toast. Right? A. Quite right, sir. Melba toast was originated and named when Mme. Nellie Melba, the opera star, asked Escoffier to serve some non-iattening bread . . . Q. What kind of a drink is a "Boilermaker's Special?" A. That was a name given to the combination of a huge drink of whiskey with a beer chaser. A very rugged concoction. Get It Right Note it said that the model for Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa was' a Florentine. That's wrong. The portrait was painted in Florence but the model, the wife of Francesco Di Bartolomi nea del Gioconda, was a Neapoli tan. Her enigmatic smile, as dis played in the painting, is said, by some unromantic art histor ians, to have been caused by the fact that she had no teeth. Speaking of Love "I have seen a homely woman transformed into , one of im pelling beauty, in several days' time, by the alchemy of love," observed Eleanore Duse. "Love not only creates beauty, but where there -is beauty already, preserves it. Women feed on caresses as a bee feeds on flowers." Ex-Wives Only one fourth of the di vorcees in this country are col lecting alimony. If you have an ex-wife to whom you are paying alimony regularly, you might call her attention to this infor mation so she will know how fortunate she is. Bagpipes "The Irish bagpipe should not be confused with the Scotch bagpipe," writes a San Francis can. "The Irish bagpipe is a mu sical instrument. It takes intelli gence and musical talent to play it. Most anybody can blow sounds out of a Scotch bagpipe." Tuesday, January 24, 19S8 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Hollywood (U.R) Esther Wil liams has tossed away her swim suit and ear plugs to be a dra- 3 matic actress because, she said today, dry e m o t i on is "much safer." The tall, wil lowy actress for 21 pictures in 10 years at MGM was the queen of Aline Mosbjr the backstage who, smiling and with every hair in place, plowed through gardenia-covered waters while orchestras played from under the lily pads. Disabled American Veterans an nounced yesterday that they have obtained a site to operate a rehabilitation center. Plans call for the center to operate as Allied Rehabilitation Inc., a non-profit organization, where handicapped persons will be employed to repair and sal vage salable items.. But behind these gay scenes, she said, lurked death. "Those big production swim ming numbers were dangerous," Esther declared. "People got hurt doing them. In one picture, I had to dive off a helicopter. "In my last musical, "Jupi ter's darling," they had to get a man to jump off a cliff for me. Not even the stunt women would do it. Swam Through Caves "I had to swim through caves on Catalina Island. There were bats and eels and it was 48 de grees. I had ear infections, too. You do that all day long and you can get" into shock." Esther figured she had better climb out of the water and slip into dry dramatic roles "or my children wouldn't have a mother any more." ' The star wrangled a three-pictures-for-five-years contract at MGM and is free for outside pictures. In her first, "The Gentle Whip" Universal-International Studio, she unveiled a new Esther that startled Holly wood. The one-time water queen St. Joseph, Mich. (U.R) A St. Joseph resident, Robert L. Stan ton, said today he missed get ting a traffic ticket in Chicago recently because the policeman found out he was from St. Joseph. - "I'm not going io give you a ticket," Stanton said the police man told him. "You've got a speed trap over there that makes ours look like peanuts ... I got caught in it myself last summer and got a ticket." Portland Squadron In Rocket Exercise Portland (U.R) Part of the 460th fighter-interceptor squad ron, based at Portland Interna tional airport; will leave Friday for Moody Air Force base, Georgia, and rocketry marks manship trials. "It's strictly dramatic," she said. "I've wanted to do this for a long time. The situations are dramatic but the woman still is well-adjusted as in my other pictures, so the transition should be easy for audiences. Rather Be Chased "I don't care if I never see another floating wax gardenia I'd rather be chased by police cars as in this movie than to start the picture with most of my clothes off." Esther still plans to swim In pictures but when "it's part of the plot," such as escaping from the villian. She's also free to make business deals. Besides two more outside films this year, she's marketing a "moisture balance" waterproof make-up and combination ice rink-swimming pools for the wintry east.
