Local and Girls Held Three juvenile pirls from Portland, two aged 14 i.nd one 15, were lodged in the county jail yesterday after they were taken into custody by state police. They have been remand ed to the juvenile department. Named Chair.manc Darrell Brittsan, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Brittsan, 1L29 Niantic St., Medford, has been named gen eral chairman of the Canoe Fete at the University of Oregon at Eugene. The Fete will be held this spring. The annual event is sponsored by the junior class. Brittsan is majoring in pre-law and is a graduate of Medford High school. Inspections Five business oc cupancies were inspected yester day by City Fire Marshal Tru man Nelson who issued four or ders for correction of hazardous conditions. Has Surgery Angus Bow mer, founder and director of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival plays, is a surgery patient at Community hospital. He under went an operation Wednesday, and today Mrs. Bowmer reported that his condition is improved. As yet he may not have visitors. Library Arrives A model school library with about 500 books arrived at the county su perintendent's office today and will be on display next week. The tour, originating at Eastern Oregon College of Education, is to "encourage better libraries" for children in grades from one to eight. Miss Florence Beards ley, director of elementary edu cation for the state board of education, is one of the chief sponsors. Check Siove City firemen were summoned to the J. C. Schurtleff residence, 404 West Ninth st., about 11:20 p.m. yes terday to check an overheated oil stove. No damage was re ported. Return Home Mr. and Mrs. Charles Snedden, 1200 Mt. Pitt ave., returned recently from a vacation trip to the midwest. They visited their parents in Gary and Hammond, Ind., and returned home via Los Angeles and San Francisco. Building Permits Medford Neon Sign company has been is sued a building permit to erect signs at 242 South Central ave., at a cost, of S420. George Holz gang has been issued a permit to remodel a residence at 626 Park ave., at a cost of $2,000. ? Square Dance Happy Harvest ers will hold a square dance from 8:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Ameri can Legion hall in Central Point. All square dancers will be wel come. Paul Larsen and Clyde Barlow will be callers. There will be potluck refreshments. Rummage A rummage sale will be held Monday, Jan. 23, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Fehl building, 108 North Ivy st., by Miss Pat's Studio of Dance. In addition to clothing for men, women and children, some an tiques, dishware, bedspreads and other items will be on sale. Returned Mrs. Kathryn McAllister, 16 Laurel st., arrived home this week from a month's vacation when she visited her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. "Phares and fam ily, Lakewood, Calif. While there she attended the Touran ment of Roses parade at Pasa dena and attended the Rose Bowl game. Condition Fair Bernard Dil lon, 14, of route 1, box 307, Foots creek, who suffered a cut leg in a power saw accident Tuesday at his home, is reported today as in "fair" condition by family members. The boy was taken to Sacred Heart hospital by his mother, Mrs. Claude Wright, whose name appeared incorrectly previously. He is still hospitalized. News About Servicemen VISITS HERE Lui Chavez, an Army sergeant, who has served in Germany vis ited relatives here during the holidays, and left last week for Ft. Riley, Kan. He was on 30 day leave, and was accompanied by his wife, Ruth, and their daughters, Stella, 2Vz, and Beat rice, IVz. They visited Chavez' father, Angel Chavez, 2 East Clark st., and his brothers and sisters who live here and others who came to Medford from Con cord, Calif. They are Miss An drea Chavez, Mrs. John Pome roy, Mrs. Richard Herndon and Henry Chavez, all Medford; and Mrs. Norman Gauviea, and An gel Chavez Jr., who came from Concord. Also here from that city were Gauviea and their chil dren, Norman Jr., Neil and Stephanie. FROM JAPAN Arthur Eckerson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman L. Eckerson, 42 South Groveland ave., has enrolled in business administra tion at Southern Oregon college after receiving his discharge from the Army. He arrived home just before Christmas and was overseas for 18 months. Ecker son received basic training at Ft. Ord, Calif., and before enter ing the service had enrolled at the University of Oregon. He is a Medford Senior high school graduate. He was in the Army for two years. ENLISTED Ronald J. Tepovac, son of John Tepovac, Toketee Falls, and Mrs. L. M. Bilderback, 418 Haven st., left Jan. 16 for Parks Air Force base, Calif., after en listing in the Air Force. He will receive six weeks basic tran- ing there. He attended high school at Glide. ON LEAVE Dennis B. von Ting, recently arrived home to visit his mother, Mrs. Florence Best, 932 South Ivy st. Dennis recently gradu ated from the Navy Electronics school at . Treasure Island, and will return to an assigned station early next month. REPORTS FOR DUTY Darrold M. Barker, engine- man second class, recently re ported for duty with the Mare Island group of the Pacific re serve fleet at Valleio, Calif. Barker, son of Mrs. Eleanor L. Hammersley, route 2, box 21, Eagle Point, entered the Navy in March, 1952. His wife is the former Miss Dora M. Wallace of Trail. AWARDS FOR CADETS Justin Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Smith, 21 Geneva st., Medford, and a senior at the University of Oregon, is one of 22 cadets who received awards t the first Air Force ROTC re view recently. Eleven awards went to air science cadets who have been designated as distin guished AFROTC cadets. GRADUATED Leo. F. Barker, an Army cor poral, son of Walter M. Barker, route 1, Crater Lake highway, recently was graduated from the Yukon command leadership school at Ladd Air Force base, Alaska. A gunner in the 274th field artillery battalion's Bat tery A, Barker received instruc tion in leadership of units, map reading and other military sub-" pects. He entered the Army in 1949 and has been stationed at Camp Chaffee, Ark. At Osteopathic Mrs. George Rose, Rogue River, and Mrs. Loda Bowen, 320 Apple st., are convalescing at Osteopathic hos pital from surgery which they underwent yesterday, and Mrs. Leonard Ward, Eagle Point, was admitted there today for medical care. Dulles plans to visit several Asian nations following the SEATO metting in Karachi. Pieper, who died Wednesday at her home, 820 Bennett ave., will be held in Conger-Morris chapter at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. J. Thomas Dixon of the First Methodist church will of ficiate. Committal will be pri vate. Pallbearers will include Ed Neftman, Oscar Gage, Art Jahnke, A. L. Schrack, Frank Hoffman and Dorr Hoffman. Mrs. Pieper was born Feb. 10, 1860, in Waumandee, Wis. Her husband, William Martin Pieper, died in 1927. She was a member of the First Methodist church. Survivors include two sons, W. B. Pieper, Shell Lake, Wise, and Melvin A. Pieper, Medford; a daughter, Mrs. Clara Herring, Medford; two sisters, Mrs. Her- tha Yaeger, Gridley, Calif., and Mrs. Olga Anderson, Morgan Hill, Calif.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
