SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Monday, January IB, J"356 Gloria Swanson Finds 'Do-lt-YourseW Not Always Best Way To Do Something By GLORIA SWANSON Written for United Press Rome (U.R) "Do it yourself is applicable to everything these days including the arts! If instead of replacing old worn-out wallpaper you decide you like murals, you don't have to hire an artist just do it your self. Or turn the kids loose. They'll paint your walls for you In nothing flat with primitives. A great artist told me that children have a bolder and more direct approach, being without any complexes. This I believed until last Sunday when 15 adult friends were let loose in my large drawing room to try their hand at putting paint to canvas. Unhappily their aim was not always good. Paint often landed in odd places, such as the in side of the jacket a man was wearing. I had wisely put down canvas to cover the expensive parquet floor. I had thought such a party would be fun and I'm sure it was for them, but I wound up not being able to concentrate on Dainting at all. I alternatpri at playing cowboy, trying to corral bulls in a china shop and being schoolmistress of a kindergarten. The Painted Ones "Kay, watch your skirt. You've got paint on it!" "And you, Francesco, mind you don't step on that tube of paint on the floor with those big feet of yours! "Hey Mike, where are you going? well, please don t get paint on the guest towels." "Whoops! Y o u'v e knocked over the easel" and there goes a painting face down. When the canvas was picked up off the floor it looked better than it did before it fell, and I'm sure it could win a prize at any surrealist exhibition. Quietly off in one corner the famous San Francisco sculptor Beniamino Bufano and Ameri can foreign correspondent Frank Gervasi were having a circus doing a joint canvas. Each was taking turns at what started out to be so they say "the birth of a flower." Yes, it was the birth of a flower, if anyone knows what the birth of a flow er looks like. Certainly, like June, it was busting out all over. Some Suggestions If you don't wish to be an emotional wreck by the time your guests depart looking like painted voodoos, please let me give you these suggestions: Have handy 50 yards of old rags, or save your old painting clothes. Use old jam bottles for mixing oils, turpentine and var nish rather than cocktail glasses for one of my guests mistook the varnish for his martini. If you are the nervous type wear a bathing cap because your hair will not only be grey but every color of the rainbow. And lastly, don't attempt this kind of a party in a rented apart ment, especially if you have a large amount of money on de posit in case of damage. Find an old attic, or barn, or better still a vacant lot and have fun!
