Gloria Swanson Finds 'Do-lt-YourseW
Not Always Best Way To Do Something
By GLORIA SWANSON
Written for United Press
Rome (U.R) "Do it yourself
is applicable to everything these
days including the arts!
If instead of replacing old
worn-out wallpaper you decide
you like murals, you don't have
to hire an artist just do it your
self. Or turn the kids loose.
They'll paint your walls for you
In nothing flat with primitives.
A great artist told me that
children have a bolder and more
direct approach, being without
any complexes. This I believed
until last Sunday when 15 adult
friends were let loose in my
large drawing room to try their
hand at putting paint to canvas.
Unhappily their aim was not
always good. Paint often landed
in odd places, such as the in
side of the jacket a man was
wearing. I had wisely put down
canvas to cover the expensive
parquet floor.
I had thought such a party
would be fun and I'm sure it
was for them, but I wound up
not being able to concentrate
on Dainting at all. I alternatpri
at playing cowboy, trying to
corral bulls in a china shop
and being schoolmistress of a
kindergarten.
The Painted Ones
"Kay, watch your skirt.
You've got paint on it!"
"And you, Francesco, mind
you don't step on that tube of
paint on the floor with those
big feet of yours!
"Hey Mike, where are you
going? well, please don t get
paint on the guest towels."
"Whoops! Y o u'v e knocked
over the easel" and there goes
a painting face down.
When the canvas was picked
up off the floor it looked better
than it did before it fell, and
I'm sure it could win a prize
at any surrealist exhibition.
Quietly off in one corner the
famous San Francisco sculptor
Beniamino Bufano and Ameri
can foreign correspondent Frank
Gervasi were having a circus
doing a joint canvas. Each was
taking turns at what started
out to be so they say "the
birth of a flower." Yes, it was
the birth of a flower, if anyone
knows what the birth of a flow
er looks like. Certainly, like
June, it was busting out all
over.
Some Suggestions
If you don't wish to be an
emotional wreck by the time
your guests depart looking like
painted voodoos, please let me
give you these suggestions:
Have handy 50 yards of old
rags, or save your old painting
clothes. Use old jam bottles for
mixing oils, turpentine and var
nish rather than cocktail glasses
for one of my guests mistook
the varnish for his martini. If
you are the nervous type wear
a bathing cap because your hair
will not only be grey but every
color of the rainbow.
And lastly, don't attempt this
kind of a party in a rented apart
ment, especially if you have a
large amount of money on de
posit in case of damage. Find
an old attic, or barn, or better
still a vacant lot and have
fun!

Have you your baby picture?
Jack Norworth, the celebrated
comedian and song writer, still
has his. Inscribed on it by his
mother is the following poem
which she took from one of her
O gcrapbooks:
My baby Is sturdy and ruddy.
So much of him! Oh, what a charm,
To hold him and feel as I hold him
Such a weight of wealth on my arm.
Rejoice in my bliss you who love me
Rejoice In the crown of my joy!
I am proud with a pride that is holy,
I am proud of my glorious Boy!

Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Wasn't
it Abraham Lincoln who first
said, "Common sense is not so
common"? A. No, s,ir. It was
Voltaire . . . Q. Who played the
title role in the original film
version of Faith Baldwin's novel
"The Office Wife'? A. Dorothy
Mackaill . . . Q. Did you says
that Murphy was the common
est name in Ireland? A. That
I did. The commonest names in
Ireland in order are Murphy,
Kelly, Walsh, Smith, O'Brien,
Byrne, Ryan, Connor, O'Neill,
Reilly and Doyle.
Please Note
Adhere to a meatless diet and
you will achieve unusual
longevity. That's what the vege
tarians are constantly claiming,
As a steak enthusiast, permit
8oe to say a few words for our
side. Charles Goodnight, the
celebrated Texas pioneer, had
steak for breakfast, lunch and
dinner. He drank a large pot
of coffee with all meals. He
smoked 50 cigars a day and lived
to be 93!
Getting Married
Are you considering entering
a state of matrimony, young
fellow? When will the wedding
w be? June is considered the most
romantic month in which to be
wed. However, the most success
ful marriages are said to take
Q place in winter or early spring.
How about the brothers of the
girl of your choice? Are they
good solid men? It is claimed
sons are very likely to have
many traits in common with
their mother's brothers. How
about your future mother-in-
law? If she is in her 40s and
somewhat plump your wife will
probably have a similar figure
at that age. Is your girl's papa
bald-headed? If so your sons
according to the experts, are
likely to be bald, or partially
so, in their middle 30s.
Sidelights
Donald Brian's salary as star
of the original New York pro
duction of "The Merry Widow'
N. J., In Apple Blossom Time."
Diet
Do you like spinach? How
about broccoli, string beans and
carrots? If you pass these vege
tables up you are missing out
on some highly valuable vita
min-packed vegetables. Eating
them would make you a very
vigorous fellow. Also carrots
would improve your eyesight.
You could hole out more long
putts and see blondes better.
Added Details
Only 15 per cent of parents
in the United States have three
children or more. So, if you
have three or more children,
you are unusual parents. Con

Presidents of the United States
played musical instruments. Off
hand, I can only name Harding,
who played the trombone, and
Truman, who is an accomplished
pianist. .

'War Criminals'
Returned By Reds
Hereleshausen, Germany
(U.R) The first West German
"major war criminals" - arrived
from Russian prison camps Sat
urday and the government
promptly announced it would
free them subject to possible
trial later when their records ar
rive from Russia.
The 453 returnees reached this
border repatriation center under
heavy guard of 60 Red army sol
diers with fixed bayonets. They
were not allowed to see waiting
relatives during their processing.
West German officials said
the former prisoners, branded
as "major war criminals" by
Soviet courts, would be given
temporary papers and allowed
to go to their homes.
East German authorities clap
ped 269 similar returnees into
prison last month.
Among yesterdays' arrivals
was former Maj. Ernst Keitel,
41, son of Hitler's last chief of
staff, Field. Marshal Wilhelm
Keitel. He said he . had never
been charged with any . crimes
or tried by a Soviet court. . j
Young Keitel said also that he i
had never been officially in- j
formed that his father had been j
hanged at Nurnberg as a war I
criminal. He said he learned of
the trial . and execution only
throug'. the prison "grapevine."
West German Chancellor Kon
rad Adenauer, during his visit
to Moscow last September, won
a Soviet promise for the release
of 9,626 German war prisoners.
All were to be released uncondi
tionally except 749 "major war
criminals," who were to be turn
ed over to local authorities for
disposition.
