January 15, 1956 Miss Carter To Appear -!n Medford Miss Paulena Carter, well known concert pianist, will ap pear here Sunday, January 29 as soloist with the Philharmonic Society of Southern Oregon. The concer will be given at Med ford Senior High school audi torium. The Sunday afternoon concert will be directed by Rich ard D. Werner, organizer of the group. Miss Carter has appeared many times on the Standard JJUUi ailKJL Willi vy,cu-ruiunu a ffi Jz phony orchestras. She has se lected "Concerto in G Minor" by Mendelssohn for her appear ance here and also will play a group of selections. Philharmonic Society guild members, who engaged Miss Carter, also plan to bring other artists of her caliber for future concerts. The guild is an aux iliary group which aids and pro motes the musicians in their endeavors. The" orchestra has grown in numbers though Mr. Werner could use more string players, especially violists. The program t will include "Fingal's Cave," overture -by Mendelssohn; "Symphony No. 1," by Beethoven and "The Blue Danube Waltz," by J o h a n n Strauss on their program for the January 29 symphony. Rehearsals Begin At High School For Senior Play The annual senior class play at Medford Senior high school is now in rehearsal and will be presented two nights, February 14 and 15, at the high school auditorium. "Dear Ruth," by Norman Krasna is the play se lected for this year's class. Rob ert D. Stedman, drama coach and instructor at the school, is director. Tickets may be obtained later this month at downtown points and reserved seats may be ar ranged by telephoning the sen ior high school office. In the play are Miss Carol Denman who takes the title role, Ruth; Dick Brown, who plays Bill Seawright; Larry Gants, Al bert; Miss JoAnne Martin, the mother (Edith); Jack Gregory, the father (Judge); Miss Honor Stansbury, Martha; Dick Ar nold, Chuck; Miss Saundra Kit tle, Mirium; Miss Janet Perry, Dora, the maid; and Jerry Gat lin, Harold Klabbermeyer. lief ( ry' iff . v Lt. and Mrs. Dale Cooper (Ches Hamley Photo) Cooper-McBride Wedding Held in Tennessee Church The wedding of Miss Geneva Ann McBride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther McBride, to Lt. Dale Cooper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude V. Cooper, 528 Hamilton street, Medford, was announced here last week. The marriage took place Sunday, De cember 4, at Asbury Methodist church in Ripley. More than 200 guests attended the double-ring ceremony, read by the Rev. Pittman Marbury, pastor of the church. Gayle Perry Jr., cousin of the bride was soloist and Mrs. Russell G. Evans was at the piano for the wedding music." Baskets of white chrysanthe mums, ' magnolia" foliage and smilax arranged with candelabra holding white tapers decorated the church. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a waltz length gown of imported French Chantilly lace" over slipper satin. The neckline of rosepoint lace medallions was1, embroidered with iridescent sequins. Mrs. Donald Corlew was ma tron of honor and bridesmaids were Miss Nifia Perry, Memphis, Mrs. George Ray, . Covington, Miss Barbara Kate McBride and Miss Martha Jane McBride, cou sins of the bride. They wore identical frocks of wine colored iridescent taffeta with fitted bodices and waltz length skirts. They carried white pompon chrysanthemums and their head dresses matched tliefr gowns. Mr. Cooper served as best man for his son and ushers were Jim- mie McBride, brother of the bride, Billy Maxwell, her uncle, Vernon McBride Jr., a cousin and Donald Corlew. The bride's mother wore a navy crepe dress and corsage of white carnations and i the bridegroom's mother wore a gold colored frock wih black velvet accessories and corsage of white carnations. A large reception followed at the home of the bride's parents. The bride's table was covered with white satin and tulle and centered with an arrangement of stock and chrysanthemums flanked by siiver candlesticks holding white tapers. Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Vern on McBride, Mrs." Arthur Walk er, Mrs. Allen McMahan, Mrs. Wilber Maxwell, Mrs. Bennie Burns, Mrs. Paul McBride, Mrs. Herman Phillips, , Mrs. Billy Maxwell, Mrs. Charles McMa han and Mrs. Will Burns. The couple was honored at several parties preceding the wedding, and Mr. and Mrs. Coo per were present for those given after their arrival in Ripley. One of the parties was given by the choir of Asbury Meth odist church, which the bride has directed. Lt. and Mrs. Cooper are liv ing at Topeka, Kan., where the officer, .a jet pilot in the United States Air Force, is assigned to duty with the Strategic Air command. He attended Oregon State college after graduation from Medford High school and received his cadet training at bases in Texas and Mississippi. The bride was graduated from the Ripley schools and from Mis sissippi State college, Columbus, Miss. Sh ower Honors Miss Helon Tonn Central Point , Miss Helon Tonn, bride-elect of ' Richard P. Dun, was honored at a bridal shower January 8 held at the home of Mrs. Robert W. Sage, 401 Oregon terrace, Medford. Cohostesses were Mrs. Ernest P. Leavitt and Mrs. : J. . anf ord Richardson. The wedding is planned for January 21 at the First Presby terian church. Miss Tonn is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Tonn; Central Point, and her fiance is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dunn, who also live in that city. Miss Tonn was presented mis cellaneous gifts. Gardeners Plan Meeting Thursday Jacksonville "Herbs for Medicinal Value," will be the topic of R. C. Cordis, speaker scheduled for the Jacksonville Garden club meeting to be held Thursday, January 19. The meeting will be held at the home of Miss Claire Hanley. It was originally planned for the home of Mrs. L. N. Surles. Double Wedding Of Interest Here Of interest to many in the valley is news of the double wedding of two former Medford teachers. The ceremonies were read December 18 at Laurel wood academy chapel at Gaston, Ore. 5 Miss Mabel B. Dougherty be came the bride of John W. Gib son, Forest Grove, and "Miss Esther Miller and Mark Lans bery, Florence, Ore., were wed ded in the double ceremony. About 500 guests attended. A reception, held at the Miller home after the ceremony was attended by only relatives and close friends. After- teaching for several years in Medford, Roseberg and Vancouver, Wash., Miss Dough erty has been on the faculty of the Portland Union academy for eight years. Miss Miller also lived and taught in the valley for many years and for the last 10 years has been associated with Laurel wood academy as a teacher of the Spanish language and art instructor. The Gibsons will live in For est Grove and the Lansberys at Laurelwood. Margo Lageson Honored at Party Miss Marge Lageson, whose wedding to Robert J. Reverman is set for February 4, was hon ored at a shower given Friday morning by Mrs. Charles W. Lemery, Mrs. Robert Norris and Mrs. Glenn L. Jackson. The party was a brunch at the Jack son home, 117 Green way circle. About 20 guests were invited, and Miss Lageson was presented a shower of miscellaneous gifts. Miss Lageson's wedding will take place in Sacred Heart Cath olic church here. She is a daugh ter of Dr. and Mrs. B. L. Lageson of Glen Oak court. Miss Wilma Bench Honored at Party: ' Talent Miss Phyllis Ann Floyd was hostess for a surprise birthday party for Miss Wilma Bench, entertaining at the Bench home in Talent Monday eve ning. Attending were the Misses Dorothy Long.'Katherine Long, Marie Furrer, Dixie Jennings, Julie Hanson, Leah " Hazelton, Mary Ka Olson, Esther Quinn, Doris Bench, the Rev. Alice May Woolley, Mrs. Damon Floyd, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Bench and sons, James and Larry, the guest of honor, ' Miss Bench, . and the hostess, Miss Floyd. : The evening was spent in playing games. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Bench and Mrs. Floyd. . 4- Creamed cheese softened with tomato juice and spiced with chili powder makes a delicious canape. Spread on small squares of bread. Chapter to Hold Annual Benefit At Country Club Plans for the annual benefit card party were discussed by Alpha Rho chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, at a meeting held Monday j evening at the home of Mrs. Har old Skinner, 34 Portland avenue. The card party will be held Monday, February 6 at the Rogue Valley Country club starting at 12 noon. During the luncheon Beta Sigma Phi members will model fashions from Burelsons. Bridge, canasta and pinochle will follow. The public may make reservations by phoning 3-3110 or N04-2688. Proceeds from the card party will be used to provide a schol arship fund for a needy high school senior girl who wishes to become a nurse but who does not have adequate funds to con tinue her studies. Mrs. Edward Bunnell and I Mrs. Roger Note are co-chairmen of the event. The cultural program for the evening was presented by Mrs. Bob Norris. Her topic was "Poise and Charm" and Mrs. Norris dis cussed how to achieve some of the necessary qualities of a charming woman, such as well groomed and well-dressed ap pearance, correct speech, good social behavior and a pleasing personality. The next meeting planned by the group will be a "get-acquainted" party for members and guests Monday, January 16 at the home of Mrs. K. L. Den ton, 805 West Second. , At the conclusion of the meet ing, refreshments were served by Mrs. Henry Schroder and Mrs. Maynard Paup. Couple To Wed In February Rites Mr. and Mrs. Vernon J. Rob inson, 1917 East Main street, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Alicia, to Theron G'. Karrick Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Theron G. Karrick, 1016 Murray street. ' The wedding will be held Sat urday, February 4, at St. Mark's Episcopal church. 'Miss Robinson is graduating from Medford; Senior High school at the end of the present term. Mr. Karrick will enroll at 'Southern Oregon college for the spring quarter. 4 Luncheon Planned . For. Social Club Reames Social club, Order of the Eastern Star, plans a pay luncheon and an afternoon of cards for Wednesday, January 18 at 12 noon in the Medford Masonic hall. - Officers for 1956 will be in stalled. Mrs. Fred Lawrence -heads the committee in charge of the event. Miss Margaret Huson (Kennel-Ellis, Salem) Margaret, Huson, Kenneth Brown To Wed in Summer Mr. and Mrs. Darell F. Huson, 45 Lindley street, announce the engagement of their daughter, Margaret, to Kenneth Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orrin L. Brown, 1203 Queen Anne ave nue. A summer wedding is planned. Miss Huson, a senior at Wil lamette university, is president of Associated Women students. She is also president of the uni versity chapter of Mu Phi Epsi lon, honor society for music ma jors, is secretary and treasurer of the campus UNESCO group and is pianist for the university choir. Both Miss Huson and Mr. Brown are graduates of Med ford High school and Mr. Brown was released from the United States Navy in December after four years of service. He will enter college in the near future 90th Birthday To Be Observed Mrs. R. I. Stuart, a Medford resident since 1911, will be hon ored at a tea this afternoon in observance of her 90th birthday anniversary. The event will be from three to five o'clock at the home of a daughter, Mrs. T. J. Filson, 2005 East Main street. Friends and relatives of Mrs Stuart are invited to attend. , Another daughter, Miss Isobel Stuart, will be cohostess for the tea. . Mrs. Miles Stuart, a daughter- in-law and Mrs. A. Orm Schenck will pour. They are al so making birthday cakes . for the occasion. Mrs. Al Gilhousen will assist. A family buffet dinner will be served after the tea. Mrs. Stuart is active, and gar dens as a hobby. U n i ve rsi ty Wo men To Hear Talk by Local Librarian Miss Helen Webster, county and city librarian, will speak at the January meeting of Medford branch, American Association of University Women, to be held at the home of Mrs. C. E. Gor don, 101'9 South Oakdale ave nue. It is set for Wednesday, January 18, at eight o'clock. Mrs. Lowell Chamberlin, head of the book review section of the club, is in charge of the pro gram and will introduce Miss Webster .whose talk will be on the "Serious- and Humorous As pects of Library Work." She is well known in this area for her former work as librarian at the Veterans' administration facil ity, Camp White, and for her Women's Hour!' on KMED. Miss Webster . who has had a varied experience in her voca tion, has only recently) returned to the valley to take over the administration of the local li brary.
