0 TWELVE MEDFORD (OREGON) Graders To Begin Varsity, Jayvee Cage Contention Medford elementary school basketball varsities will play six-game slates this season with opening encounters' set for this Thursday afternoon. t. All five of the public 'schools , and St. Mary's parodhial school will participate ein the once around varsity slate and which will be followed by play-off has sles. Games with St. Mary's, however, will not count in j championship play. Junior varsities of the public schools will launch their sched ules on Friday. Varsity games, with one ex ception, .will continue through February 16 on Thursdays and junior varsity play will be on Fridays through February 10. All scuffles are to begin at 4 p.m. At the end of the regular var sity slate the first and second plage teams will be matched in an "extra" tussle (February 18.) The third and fourth place clubs will be rivals and the No. 5 team will take on St. Mary's. This extra rivalry will have no affect on the loop standings with the exception that tangles be tween the top two will count fir first place if the two clubs wind up regulay play tied. Clogston 410 Skeet Victor Martin Clogston won the 410 gauge trophy Sunday in skeet competition at Medford Gun club and Don, Hawk took the merchandise prize in the 50 bird, all-gauge event with add ed handicap. Clogston broke 39 out of 50 in the 410 affair and Ray Coleman was runnerup with 33. Hawk's prize was settled on the flip of a c&in. He and Ed Gordon tied at 50 straight, me two also deadlocked on a 25 bird shootoff. Annual team shoot of club will be held next Sunday, Jan. 15. Wilton White is captain of the Blue team and Pau Culbertson is leader of the Reds who won last year. Winners will get bacon and losers will have the honor of serving the annual dinner on Wednesday night, Jan. 18. The shoot is slated rain or shine and practice will begin at 10 a.m. Lunch will be available at the grounds. In the Southern Oregon Con ference Medford will go to Klamath Falls in attempts Fri day and Saturday nights to wrest command from the Pel icans. The two schools vere knotted with two wins and no losses after the first week end of league activity. Other tussles in the circuit match Grants Pass, and Ashland at Grants Pass on Friday and at Ashland on Sat urday. Phoenix and Crater fight for the sole lead in the A-2 Rogue League, going into scraps each with 2-0 records. Friday night play -will be at Central Point Phoenix Hands Butte Falls MIL Loss, 71 to 52 The Phoenix Merchants over came a halftime deficit of one point to hand Butte Falls a 11 to 52 loss in Medford Independ ent Basketball league play last night. - The Merchants, trailing 30-31 at halftime, changed to a man-to-man defense in the second half to pull into the lead. Fen ton tallied 19 points to lead the Phoenix scoring, and Abbott tossed in 18 for Butte Falls' leading scorer. In MIBL games tonight, the YMCA opposes Moose lodge at 7 o'clock and Headquarters com pany of the National Guard meets Phoenix at 8:30 o'clock. Both frays will be at McLough- lin junior high. Pat McMurtry Beats Jones Portland (U.R) Irish Pat McMurty, a flashy Tacoma, Wash., heavyweight, knocked out Cordell (Emperor) Jones, Reno, Nev, in 2-49 of the third round of a scheduled 10-rounder here last night. It was the 19th win in 2C professional starts and the 17th knockout for the speedy Tacoma boy, who weighed in at 185. Jones, a 188-pound veteran of 37 fights, scored well with sev eral left hooks, but McMurty had him battered and bleeding from the nose in the second round. In the eight-round semi wind- up, Diamond Dick Lane, 153, Billings, Mont., decisioned Joe Murphy, 154, Reno. Kel Wayne, 162, Vancouver Wash., knocked out Willie Stev ens, 163, also of Reno, in 2.30 of the second round of a six round special bout. REDUCE STALLING New York 4J.PJ Coach Howard Hobson of Yale believes college basketball should adopt the 24-second possession rule now used by professional teams. "It is the only way to reduce stalling," said Hobson, who also suggested awarding three points for basqets made from 24 feet out to ."kill the zone." Schools Vie The top ranking clubs in the Jackson County B League all have the favored role this Fri day. Four members of the B loop have non-counting action to night.. Butte Falls plays at Jack sonville. Rogue River will be at' home to Glendale, and Pros pect will entertain Chiloquin. St. Mary's will go to Mt. Shasta on Saturday. On the junior high front Med ford seventh and eighth grade clubs will have tussles on Thurs day afternoon on their home courts. Hedrick teams will play Ashland and Central Point will come for games at McLough lin. On Friday afternoon Hed rick ninth graders will be hosts to Eagle Point freshmen. Keeping their records clean were the Timid Tigers by a 30 to 21 count over the Stompers, the Trojans with a 71 to 10 trouncing of the Eight Balls and the Zombies with a 48 to 31 . er dict over the Studs. Each of the three victors scored its second win. In the other Saturday mix the Sleepy Hollow Boys scored their first win, 37 to 20, over the Strokers. The fourth unbeaten team in the circuit, the Fragrant Five, had its second round mix de layed until next Friday after noon. It will oppose the Rodents. Games this Saturday will be Eight Balls against Rodents' at 10 a.m.. YMCA, Red Cross Aquatic School Starts Thursday lvieaiora xmja and tne Jack son County Red. Cross chapter will have a joint aquatic school starting Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7-p.m. This course will be in two parts, Part one starts Thursday and meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays until Jan. 30. At that time ( the American Red Cross area water safety director will conduct part two. A participant in this course must be 18 years old and have a current senior life saving card. Big Weakness Hack, now spending much of his time duck hunting in the rice stubble fields of the Sacramento valley, said it's only a "big weakness" in the outfield that even makes him say things like that. He said Banks is' as close to having his short patch job tied down as is possible in ad vance of spring training. Purdue Both Lose By UNITED PRESS , The Big Ten basketball race took another spin today as a re sult of two upsets and this time Illinois came out on top. Indiana, ranked No. 6 nation ally, and Purdue had been tied for the top spot but both were major upset victims. Indiana lost its shooting eye and bowed to Minnesota, 77-71, at Minneapo lis, and Purdue was beaten by upset-conscious Michigan, 74-67, at Ann Arbor, Mich. These surprises enabled Illi nois, ranked No. 5 Nationally, to vault to the top with a 2-0 mark by whipping Wisconsin, 96-77. Ohio State could have tied for the lead, but was beaten by Iowa 88-73. Lovellette Holds Lead Over Petti t In NBA Scoring . tew York (U.R) Clyde Lovellette of Minneapolis held a slim lead over Bob Pettit in both scoring and rebounding to day as the National Basketball association race drew near the halfway mark but both leads were mighty shaky. That's because Minneapolis has played two games more than St. Louis, 32 to 30. .Actually, Pettit is ahead of big Clyde , in both departments on a basis of average per game. Lovellette" has. tallied 722 points for an average of 22.6 points per game.
