'Merger Fever' Expected To Drop In Coming Year c New York (U.R) The year 1955 went down as the most active period for mergers in a quarter-century, but economists expect the "merger fever" will drop in 1956. n According to the Federal Trade Commission, combinations In mining and manufacturing industries totaled more than 500 In 1955, the most since 799 re- corded in 1930. The peak was 1.245 in 1S29. Economists say two factors probably will slow activity in 1956: (1) the fact that most like, ly candidates already have con colidated and (2) growing op position from the Justice De partment. During 1955 a mad scramble for diversification sparked most unions. In a booming economy companies found mergers a good w?iy to improve their competi tive standings, pool resources or take advantage of special ta credit situations. Old Names, New Products In some cases strange bed fellows appeared. Childs Co., a restaurant chain, for example, 0' invaded the shoe polish field; 0 Philadelphia & Reading Corp., a coal producer, entered the un derwear business; and ACFJBrill Motors Co., a former bus build er, bought supermarkets. Experts say 1956 will see more of this. At the same time in 1955 there were many consolidations of companies with complementing production and distribution fa cilities. Heading this group was' the merger of Remington Rand, Inc., and Sperry Corp. into the giant Sperry Band Corp., an elec tronics manufacturer with $500, 000,000 in assets. As the merger fever rose in 1955 so did concern by the Just- Ice Department. It was worried about a lessening competition resulting from unfons of big pro ducers in the same field Legal Battles Loom The year 1956 promises big 'legal battles on this subject. For example Bethlehem Steel Corp.'s Chairman EugenejG. Grace says he wants a court decision on the legality of his proposed merger with Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. The Justice Department an nounced opposition to this mar riage last Spring. SEPT 22 Time v I'TJ J TWEy only work when t First Sawmill Story . . . The Rev. Samuel Parker arose before dawn on Oct. 16, 1835, and promptly awakened his two Indian companions. They were afloat In their frail canoe with the first streaks of light on the wide Columbia. Moving down stream from the Gorge, the three travelers found the way pleas ant on unrippled watgr and in a gentle current. The cold, quiet air was alive with the strong scents of forest and stream and with the waking sounds of God's creatures. Flying geese and ducks, swim ming swans, and small birds on the north bank were choir and congregation for" the parson's matins. The morning way seem ed very good, bend by bend, hour by hour, for all its mid October chill. Even .a seal sur faced,' to snort a greeting to the boatmen. White men and their work appeared unexpectedly in the primeval scene. In the woods of the north bank two were spied by the missionary, "with yoke of oxen, drawing logs for saw ing," from a heavy ' stand of giant "balsam firs." The Rev. Sam'l Parker gave hail and po litely inquired the distance to Fort Vancouver. The bullwhack- er bawled back, "Only seven miles around -.the 3 point, down I that, prairie." "Thank you, sir," echoed from the preacher's big voice, as the Indians paddled on with the easy current. Three-Saw Outfit . . . Sam Parker, then 56 years old, was a preacher of the Congre gational persuasion, enormously educated, a founder of Auburn Theological Seminary, a leading citizen of Ithaca and he had been more than seven months in the Western wilderness with mountain men and Indians. He loved all men alike, red or white, sinners or saints. All things un der God interested Parker, lum bermen and lumbering included. So this unique missionary wrote the first report on the re gion's forest industry of the 1830s for the general public. This is a sample: "Soon we came to a large saw mill, around which were tall piles of lumber and several cot tages. This looked like business upon a more extensive scale than I had expected. I called a short time at this establishment, where I found several Scotch laborers belonging to the Hudson's Bay Company, with their Indian fam ilies. Although it was then about noon, they offered me a break fast cf peas and fish . . . "SiK miles up the Columbia (from Fort Vancouver), at the confluence of a stream coming from the northeast, the sawmill, with several saws, is kept in operation most of the year. This mill, though large, does not fur nish more lumber than a com mon mill would, with one saw, in the United States. Besides what lumber is used in the common business about this- station, one, and sometimes two shiploads are sent annually to Oahu, Sandwich Islands and there it is called the pine of the northwest coast, and sells for about $50 the thousand? feet. Spars and timber for ship ping are also sent to that mar ket ... " The Great Forest ... The scholarly . missionary he was highly praised for his scien tific notes by Yale's famed Dr. Benjamin Silliman enjoyed three fine trips between Fort Vancouver and Fort George (As toria). The third was on the first run of the No. 1 steamboat on the pacific, the great Beaver, in 1836. He wrote much about the riverside forests, as in this ac count of an excursion from Fort George: - "The storm being somewhat abated, on the 26th, Mr. Dunn, the superintendent of the fort, and myself, took our rifles to go back into the woods to hunt deer for exercise. But so dense was the forest, so filled and inter woven with various vines and shrubbery, that it was next to impossible to make any progress . . . We did not penetrate the woods more 'than a mile before we gave up the object, and turn ed our course back, but our re turn, with diligent efforts, oc cupied some hours ..." The Rev. Samuel Parker's business was to prepare the way for the Whitman-Spalding mis sion of 1836. He did this well. He also did some top-notch re porting. (U.R) John C Boyle, vice- president and general manager of Califor nia Oregon Company, said that the way was clear for a $70, 000,000 12-year Copco develop ment program. He said Interior Department approval of a 50-year contract with the company for continued operation of the Link river pow er and irrigation dam in Klam ath county has enabled revised plans to go forward. Must Obtain Licensing Before work begins, Boyle said, licensing must be obtained from the Oregon State Hydro electric commission, as well as approval from California and Oregon state regulatory agencies and a contract filed with the Federal Power commission. Formal application- will be presented to the FPC as soon as the contract is signed, Boyle said. He added that approval protects present and future ir rigation water for the Klamath basin and northern California. To Combine Dams "Because pf delay, Copco has decided to combine Big Bend No. 1 and Big Bend No. 2 power dams in Klamath county and in crease, the. output from 50,000 to 80,000 kilowatts," Boyle said. Work is expected to begin on Big Bend in the summer of 1956, with completion scheduled for 1959. The overall program would provide 580,000 acre feet of wa ter storage at Aspen lake and Round lake, Boyle said. 'BLUES FATHER' ILL New York (U.R) W. C.
