o 0 Iiss Marilyn Miller ?Aillers Announce Engagement News Ast Holiday Party Mayor and Mrs. Earl M. Mil ler, 617 Park street, announced the engagement of thei daugh ter, Marilyn, to Dale Hodges of Seattle at an den house Christ mas night. Mr. Hodges is the son of Mrs. Elsie M. Hodges, Seattle. 0 The announcement was made with Christmas bells attached to napkins. A fall wedding is planned by the couple. Mr. Hodges, a graduate of Medford High school, recently returned from Korea where he was assigned to duty with the United Sties Army. Miss Miller has been attend ing the University of Washing ton, where she is a member of Phi Mu sorority. Mr. and Mrs. William Brown of Centralia, and Mt. Rainier National park in Washington were among the guests attend ing the open house. Farewell Events Honor Ludwigs Mr. an& Mrs. Richard Ludwig, who left December 29 to live in Portland, were honored at vari ous events before their depart ure. During a masquerade party bowling event Tuesday evening at Medford Bowling lanes, Mrs. Ludwig was presented a gift. She served as secretary of the Ladies moving. The couple were honor-guests at a dinner party given Decem ber 18 at Mon Desir Dining inn by employees of the Pacific Tele phone and Telegraph company. Mr. Ludwig is an employee of the company and has been trans ferred to Portland. He was pre sented a gift during the dinner party. About 50 persons attend ed. The Ludwigs lived here at 1407 East Main street. Home Economics Club Has Chrttfrnas Party Butte Falls The Butte Falls Economics club numbers met recently at the Moore home for a business session and Christmas party. An exchange of gifts was held. A report was givC9 on a rec ent bazaar and food sale at which $31.78 was realized. T next club meeting will he January 18 at the Smith homeMrs. Fred Kincaid was a guest at the rec ent meeting. Cummings, 1000 Alta street announced the engage ment of their daughter, Miss E. Lorraine Cummings, to Horace Tharp Mann, son of Mrs. Horace Mann, Rolla, Mo. Miss Cummings received her bachelor of arts degree in com mercial education at Pacific Luthern college, Parkland, Wash. For two and one half years she lived in Washington, D. C, while employed as a stewardess for United Air Lines. Mr. Mann was graduated from Missouri School of Mines. He did graduate work at the Uni versity of Texas, and is employ ed as a mechanical engineer for the department of defense?This year he is attending the Uni versity of Maryland, and is work ing toward his doctor's degree in mechanical engineering. He was awarded one of 12 fellow shhips offered each year by the agency, q The wedding is set for June and will take place in Washing ton, D. C. r " ' ' Mrs. Kenneth H. Robinson, 4B Windsor ave, announces the en gagement of her daughter. Miss Sandra Jean Robinson (above), to Pvt. Robert Lee Cooper, son ftf Mr. and Mrs. Ed Cooper, 1916 North Elm street. The bride-elect is a senior at Medford High school and her fiance, who at tended Crater High school. Cen tral Point, is stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. No date has been set for the wedding. u New Milk Flavors - To Be Introduced A forecast 'of new milk fla vors came this week with the announcement that raspberry, strawberry, grape, cherry and coffee flavors can be success fully added to whole milk. Strawberry flavored milk al ready is sold in Chicago and cof fee-flavored milk is sold in Bridgeport, Conn. Both flavors are successful, he Borden com pany, reports.0 But root beer flavored milk, tried a few years ago, was a flop. The University of Maryland predicted added flavors would be introduced in 1956, including orange, lemon and lime. Nutri tionists hope the variety will in duce teenagers to keep drinking their daily milk quota. Auxiliary to Plan Activities for Year o Plans for activities of the new year will be made by members of the auxiliary to the Crater Lake chapter, Veterans of For eicn Wars, when they meet Tuesday, January 3 at 8 p.m. The session will be held at 42 North Front street. Topics Announced For Garden Club Topics for a meeting of Med ford Garden club Thursday, Jan uary 5, will be '"Low Growing Shrubs for Landscaping," and "Effects of Spray or Insecticides on Plants and People." If PH Miss Glenna James (Brainerd photo) Engagement News Told-at Supper New Year's Eve Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. James; 1426 Euclid avenue, Medford, announce the engagement of their daughter, Glenna, to Ar thur E. Symons Jr., son of Mr. and.,Mrs. Arthur E. Symons of Seattle, Wash. The news was revealed at a New Year's eve buffet, supper given by Miss James' parents at theirchome. No date has been set for the wedding. ,. Miss James was graduated from Whitworth college, Spo kane, Wash., where she was ac tive in the work of Associated Women Students a,nd was elect ed to "Who's Who" in her senior year. Later she attended the University of Washington where she was initiated into Pi Lamb da Theta, honor society for women in education. Miss James is now with the guidance de partment of the Seattle public school "system. Mr. Symons attended Williams college where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon frater nity, and was graduated from Whftworth college in 1951. He is now assistant plant superin tendent of the Hershey Packing company, Snohomish, Wash. Mr. Symons arrived in Med ford by plane Friday afternoon to spend the New Year week end here and attend the an nouncement party. Medford Voters' League To Make Local Survey For Interim Committee At the request of Oregon's legislative interim committee on local government, a study will be made by Medford League of Women Voters of the problems resulting from the state's rapid increase in population. ' Mrs. Dunbar Carpenter will lead the study. It will cover the questions of needs and meth ods for securing such services as water, sewage, mass trans portation, streets, fire protection, parks and others in our growing cities and they- fringe areas. Also to b6 studied are the meth ods ' for meeting service needs, how the service will be paid for and what may be the general taxation effect. What units of local government are concerned and what should be the relation ships between these . different Review Planned For Study Club A review will be given on the book, "The Dinner Party," at a meeting of the Wednesday Study club Wednesday, January 4 at 2 -p.m., at the home of Mrs. L. Miss Doty Guest At Shower Party Miss Marilyn Doty was hon ored at a shower given last Wednesday by Miss Shirley Lynch at the home of her par Lynch, 139 Kenwood avenue, ents, Mr. and Mrs. John B. Miss Doty's wedding to Lewis A. Ripperger, Eugene, has been set for January 29 at the Camp White chapel. Attending the party were Miss Barbara Cook, Miss Marianne Moore, Miss Jeanne Johnson, Miss Nancy Newton, Miss Roxy Stokes, Miss Carol Van Ausdall and the honored guest, Miss Doty. The party was planned as a surprise Jor' Miss Doty. Games were played and refreshments served. Miss Lynch, student at the University of Oregon, is spend ing the week end in Portland to attend a New Year party giv en by Alpha Delta sorority sis ters at the Shoemaker home. She will return to school the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Rimell of Canyonville, Ore., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Joyce . Elaine (above) to Oliver A. Fick, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Chapman of Hornbrook, Calif. The en gagement was told at a small dinner party given recently at the Rimoll home. The bride elect is attending CanyonTille Bible academy, and her fiance is an alumnus of the academy. No date has been set for the wed ding. units will also be considered. The interim committee, now, has no opinions as to what its findings or conclusions may fin ally be, it is pointed out. Its first objective is to gather com plete and accurate information to serve as a reliable basis for further analysis. Later, as find ings and tentative proposals are developed they will be given full publicity. The committee is seeking the suggestions and ad vice of all interested persons be fore preparing any final pro posals for the next legislature according to Mrs. R. D. Hiatt, league president. The, committee0 desires to ob tain information about any spec ific problems of local and fringe areas services, financing or gov ernment relationships which may exist in local area's as well as information about any stud ies or proposals which may have been made relative to such prob lems. Ormond R. Bean, Port land city commissioner who is chairman of this committee ap pointed by Governor Patterson, said such information will be of great assistance to the com mittee in obtaining a clearer understanding of the actual local problems in the different parts of the state. Tl;e evening unit meeting of the league will be held January 10 at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. R. F. Kyle, 42 South Keene way. The morning unit will meet at the home of Mrs. Fred Carr, 16 Florence Avenue, Jan uary 18, at 9:45. The topic of discussion will be the local agenda item. Campbell, 1395 South Peach street, Med ford, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Joanne Grace Campbell, to Robert M. Wickman, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wickman, 226 King street, Medford. Miss Campbell is a senior in elementary education at South ern Oregon college, Ashland. Mr. Wickman is one of the own ers of the Medford Plate Glass and Mirror company. Both are graduates of Medford High school. " The wedding will be held in early March. - t- Reunion Held By Walkers Eagle Point Thirty-two per sons attended a reunion Christ mas day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Walker. All the children of the couple and all the grandchildren were present. This is the first time " in 13 years that the group has been together at one time. World War II caused the first long separation when th Walk ers' -oldest son, Cleve Walker, now of Crescent City, Calif., went into the service. Their second son, Joe Walker, served for four years in the Air Force, beginning during the Korean conflict.Their son,' Char les Walker, entered the Army. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Walker came from Las Vegas, Nev; She is the former Miss Radna Callihan of Eagle Point. The Cleve Walk ers arrived from their home just before roads were closed to traffic during the recent storm. The youngest son, Paul Walk er, stationed as an airman at Fairchild Air Base near Spo kane, Wash., drove from there. Mr. and Mrs. Walkers' five daughters all live in the area. Mrs. Clyde Bentley, Mrs. Roy Unruh and Mrs. Joe Ellison, all attended from Talent with their families, Mrs. Frank Tilford and family came from Phoenix, and Mrs. J. D. Conner Jr., and her husband were there from Med ford. Nayy Mothers' Club Announces Meeting Flood Relief Given , Rogue" Valley Navy Mothers will conduct an all-day session Tuesday, January 3 beginning at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Gladys Orr, 1110 East 11th street. Those who attend should take table service. The Rogue Valley Navy Moth ers club does relief work and most recently were able to as sist the son of one of its mem bers and his family. George Masterfield, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Master field, Central Point, is station ed with the Air Force in Marys ville. His family including his wife, a four months old infant and two young sons, lost their possessions in recent California floods. RIVERSIDE Sunday, January 1, 1956 Couple Weds In Ceremony At Spokane Sams Valley Miss Diane M. James became the bride of Rob ert M. Kastama in a double ring ceremony November 28 at Spo kane, Wash. The couple has been living .at Bellingham, Wash., where the bridegroom will enter college at midterm. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester E. James, Samsf Valley, and the bridegroom's parents are Mr. and Mrs'. Gusta Kastama of Tonsford, Minn. The bride is a 1952 graduate of Crater high school and a 1955 graduate of the Deaconess hospital in Spokane, Wash. The bridegroom served in the United States Air Force. The ceremony was read at 8 p.m., at Broadway Baptist church in Spokane by the Rev. Gordon Johnson. Mrs. John Schmidt was organist and Mrs. Gordon Johnson furnished vocal solos. The bride's gown was of satin with lace and a crown of pearls held her net veil. She carried a bouquet of white feathered carnations and a lace handkerchief . which first was used by her grandmother, Mrs. Dwight Briggs, Riverside, Calif., at her wedding and later iiy her mother, and' a sister, MrsT A. M. Miller. Harold Parrish, a friend of the couple gave the bride, in marriage. Mrs. Miller was matron of honor. Her dress was of yellow crystalline and pompon chrys anthemums in fall shades form ed her boukuet and her head dress. Janice Miller, a niece of the bride, served ds flower girl. She was dressed in an organdy and lace gown with lace veil. She wore a wristband of pompon Robert Carlson was best pan and ushers were Nes Nygren and Gordon Goodrum. The reception was held in the church annex. Chrysanthemums in fall shades and white candles decorated the refreshment table. Miss 'Anne Greeny and Miss Mary Kay Salem cut the cake'. Miss Joyce Gato and Miss Helen Clowes poured coffee while Miss Joan Smith had charge of the gifts and Miss Lois Bartram reg istered the guests. The bride's mother wore a navy blue dress and her corsage was of red rosebuds. Mrs. Har old P ar r i s h represented the bridegroom's mother. She was attired in a white dress worn with red accessories and a-, red rosebud corsage. The bride's brother, Dwight James, Sams Valley, also was a guest at the wedding.
