New Year's Eve Dances Saturday Medford BPOE lodge has planned the annual New Year's eve dance at the clubhouse Sat urday night. This will be the 45th annual dance, the first New Year's eve party having been given by the lodge in 1910. Dancing will be from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., with a toast to the new year at midnight. Favors and noisemakers are being pro vided for those who attend. It is stated that the event is semi-formal and is for mem bers of the lodge and ; their guests. Ted Nave is general chairman of the dance. 3 Another annual holiday event Of the lodge is a Tom and Jerry party on New Year's day. Since it falls on Sunday this year, it will be held Monday, January 2, instead. Serving will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and the party is for members of the lodge and their ladies. - : Redman and Pocahontas lodges will hold a New Year's eve party for members and their guests Saturday night at Red man hall. The dance is set for 8:30 p.m. and ladies attending are asked to take sandwiches for the refreshment hour. " 3 Reporter, Author r. Mr. Wood, reporter and au thor, formerly; was head of the Paris office of the New York Herald. He is author of the books "Europe Tomorrow," "The Ori ent Looks Ahead," "China To morrow" and "Stalin Man of Masks." The speaker also participated in the first conference leading to the writing of the United Na tions charter, and has been con stantly in attendance at all" of the meetings of the Security Council and General Assembly of the UN. o Reservations for the dinner are to be made with the secre tary, Mrs. O. Teachers Report Pupils' Projects Two teachers at Jackson school have reported that their pupils carried on "share Christmas" projects this year. Pupils in Mrs. Muriel Har vey's second0 grade, and Mrs. Sarah Watson's third grade shared their Christmas toys. In stead of the usual exchange of gifts, children in Mrs. Harvey's room gave dimes and quarters to buy a large doll for a girl in the Shriner hospital in Portland. Children in Mrs. Watson's room brought gaily wrapped aifts which were sent to the Fairview home for children in Salem. Riverside Bridge club will play for master points when club members meet Wednesday, Jan uary 4. The club played December 28, with Mrs. C. L. Howard and Roy Pruitt scoring first in the north south playing position, and Mrs. Berg Marten and Mrs. Jack Mitchell first for east-west play ers. The Howard-Pruitt score was 6IV2 points, and the Marten- I Mitchell score was 46V2 points. Additional north-south win ners were Mrs. Richard Mile stone and John Sclheim, second, oO1; Mrs. M. M. Herman and Mrs. Edna Miller, third, 49: Mrs. B. L. Sanderson and T. J. Fuson, fourth, 46 points. Other east-west winners were Mrs. George Dean and Mrs. O. O. Alenderfer, second, 43 Vz; Mrs. Dwight Seely and Mrs. Fred Rehling, third, 41; Miss Isobei Stuart and Mrs. Fuson, fourth, 40 -points. u When the club met December 21 two couples tied for first place in the north-south position. They were Mrs. Herman and her partner, Mrs. Sanderson, Mrs. H. J. Boyd and Roy Pruitt, each couple scoring 56 points. Mrs. Richard Milestone and Mrs. C. L. Howard took third with 50 points and Mrs. Marten and Mrs. E. K. Ricker were fourth with 45V2 points. East-west winners for that ses sion were Mrs. Miller and Mr. Solheim., first, 60 points; Mrs. Fuson and Miss Stuart, second, S0V2; Mrs. W. WStevenson and Mrs. Jack Mitchell, third, 4312 points; Mrs. Dean and Mrs. J. J. Beaman, fourth, 47 Vz points. SHady Cove Group Reports Activity. During December r Shady Cove December has been a busy month for members of the auxiliary to Steelhead post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. First event was the annual "pil pal", party held at VFW hall. During the cafternoon a Christmas tree was decorated and gifts were exchanged. The names of pals were revealed and the party ended with re freshments. The post and auxiliary held a Christmas party December 16, the event beginning with a pot luck dinner at 7:30 p.m. The tables were decorated with can dles and evergreens, and dinner was served by candlelight. Gifts were exchanged and games played. Among the guests of the post were George Perry, department hospital chairman and com mander of Post 2302, Harry Fin ley, Central . Point, and Al Young; Camp White. , December 17 a Christmas party for children was held. Mr. and Mrs. Finley of Central Point visited the party as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and distribut ed gifts and candy to all the children. December 14 Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cassal, Mrs. Ed Learning and Mrs. Russell Stelle assisted Mrs. Harry Birch, hospital chair man, in the gift room at Camp White, wrapping gifts for the veterans to mail to their fami lies. Medford Couple" ' Visits Three Sons Mr. and Mrs. Victor Kasser have returned to their home at 903 South Peach street after spending Christmas with their three sons at Cheyenne, Wyo. All three sons are serving with the United States Air Force. The-family gathering includ ed Staff Sgt. Victor Kasser, Mrs. Kasser and their daughter; Air man Bernard Kasser, Mrs. Kas ser, their son and daugter, the latter born December 15 in Cheyenne, and Staff Sgt. Steph en Kasser who recently return ed to this country bringing his French wife and their year-old daughter. Sergeant Kasser will be stationed at, Amarillo, Tex. with the USAF. 0 Elliots to Show Holy Land Films Jacksonville "Going to Beth lehem," will be the title of films to be shown Saturday, Decem ber 31 at a meeting of the 20 30 club of Jacksonville Presby terian church. The pictures will show scenes taken by Dr. and Mrs. Bert Elliott on a tour to the Holy land and the couple will show the pictures. A potluck dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m., and hosts for the meeting will be Mr. and Mrs. Richard Niedermeyer and j Mrs. Marian Niedermeyer. Parsons and children, Craig and Susan, Reager road. Theogroup meets every five years to be with Mrs. Olivia Evans, who now is living at Coos Bay, and who came to the val ley for the event. Others from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. italph Evans and children, Don, Sherrill and Mar cia, Los Angeles: Mr. and Mrs, M. N. Kerr and children, Karen and Norman Jr., Coos Bay; Mr, and Mrs. Vernon M. Evans, and Bob and Merilyn, Portland. Others were Mr. and Mrs. Leon Evans, and Christine, and Mr. and Mrs. Tyley O. Evans and Richard and Tylene, all of Central Point. PRINCE CHARMING WEDS London (U.R) Prince Charm ing honeymooned today with his 17-year-old bride. The prince is David Sant, 21, who won the title in a male .beauty contest last year. He married Janet Harris Thursday against her par ents' wishes and rode off with her to Scotland. Q Bitter Cold Starts New Year's Week-End By UNITED PRESS Biting winter weather ushered in the start of the New Year's holiday in most of the nation's north today. 0 A new cold wave clamped icy temperatures on the northern planes, the upper Mississippi val ley, and most of the Great Lakes. ' Low temperatures in cluded 15 below at Grantsburg, Wis., lrabove at Bismarck, N.D., and 14 at Chicago. The cold blast also penetrated the southern plains and Ohio valley, but with less' bitterness. Farther east, freezing rairf or drizzle slicked roads in parts of Pennsylvania and New York. Temperatures were also be low normal in the eWst, where Californians rolled up their sleeves in wintry weather for their biggest reconstruction job since the San Francisco earth quake. He was released last week, and was able to be home for Christmas. ' o The annual Christmas ban quet was held by the Butte Falls High school in the auditorium. There was a drawing of names, and gifts were exchanged Miss Julia Pingle, a student at Southern Oregon college, Ash land, is home visiting her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Pingle. Miss Pingle will return to col lege on Jan. 3. Mr. and Mrs. Page Stauffer, of Butte Falls, are spending the holidays at their . daughter's home in Portland. The Stauffers were planning to stop at Salem to visit the Oregon State School for the Blind, to visit a A2-year-ld blind boy they have fostered. They hoped to visit some other blind children which the Butte Falls Lion's Auxiliary has aided. Mr. and Mrs. Stauffer were deliver ing several Christmas packages tg the children. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Malloy had as their guests for Christmas Mrs. Malloy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess Black, Medford. The Keith Scott family of Butte Falls spent Christmas with their daughter and her family, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Treferan, Medford. Miss Shirley Irwin, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wald 9 testified yesterday at the trial of Miss Hayworth's $150,000 breach of contract suit against Columbia Studios. The studio is counter-suing the ac tress on grounds she broke her contract with Columbia. The actress cqntendf the stu dio failed to start the ' picture, "Joseph and His Brethren," as scheduled. The studio cfiarged Miss Hayworth broke8 the con tract by not making the picture.
