The en gagement of Miss Baize and the Caldwell's son, William Carl Caldwell, was announced last week. Miss. Baize is a daughter of Mrs. Otto A. Mosley, Seattle, former Medford resident, and is a granddaughter of Mrs. Net tie Ellenburg, 119 North Central avenue in this city. Young Caldwell, a student at Pacific university. Forest Grove, is home for the holidays and will leave Wednesday to return to school. He is on the freshman basketball squad at the school. Students To Hold Dance Tomorrow St. Mary's High school seniors will sponsor a dance Tuesday, December 27 from 9 p.m. to 12 midnight at the Jackson hotel. All students of other classes at the high school are invited. "Winter Wonderland" will be the theme of decorations and refreshments will be served. Belle Van Dyke's orchestra will furnish the dance music. Patrons and patronesses for the event are Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Darland, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Read, Mr. and Mrs. John Mur phy and Mr. and Mrs. John Monroe. General chairman are Gerald Darland and Bill Carey. Miss Ann Metz has charge of the decorations and Miss Janet Johnson is the refresh ment committee chairman. f Two Parties Held For Sanitarium Staff, Employees Jacksonville A Christmas party was given December 20 for the employees of the Mitchell Sanitarium and their families. Mrs. Mitchell was hostess for the event. Later another party was held for the patients with ; a tree, gifts, cards and much singing of Christmas carols. A traditional Christmas din ner was served for the patients yesterday, Christmas day. Holiday Guests Among holiday visitors are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Coon, Randle, Wash. Mrs. Coon is the former Robene Starcher and the Coons are guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bren H. Starcher, 1570 Stage Road south. The couple will leave Thursday for Tacoma to spend the remainder of the holiday vacation with Mr. Coon's parents. Muellers Here Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Mueller, Port Townsend, are in Medford to spend Christmas with Mrs. Mueller's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Vern Shangle, 1445 Kings highway. Mrs. Mueller is the former Carolyn Shangle. Mr Mueller is a teacher in the Port Townsend schools. Son Here Herb Nill, Eugene, will return north this evening after spend ing Christmas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Nill, Myers court. Additional guests of the Nills for Christmas dinner yes terday were their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Ousterhout and three children. A. Pfeifer assisting the hostess. They demonstrated the lesson "Main Dish Meals." Program planning for next year was discussed, and final se lection of topics made. Mrs. D. Lageson gave a read ing by Peter Marshall. During the Christmas party members exchanged gifts. Mrs. Ralph Lane, the chairman, con ducted a business meeting. Mrs. Max Hawks reported on the two lessons and work shops given on basket making. Mrs. T. M. Littlefield reported on a civil defense meeting held recently in Shady Cove and Mrs.' E. Houston gave a report on 4-H Mrs. J. W. Hicks and Mrs. D. Larson will be leaders for a les son on pressing to be held Janu ary 11 at the T. M. Littlefield home on Rogue River drive. Mrs. Hawks was presented a special Christmas gift and Mrs. William Bishop won a prize. Mrs. Larson was appointed to represent the unit at a meeting of civic groups to be held at the VFW hall in January to discuss the needs of the growing Shady Cove community. Family Dinner Held in Ashland Several Medford persons were in Ashland Christmas day to at tend a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Powell. From here were Mr. and Mrs. William Kerr and son; Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Kruggel; Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Kruggel Jr.: and sons; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Krug gel and dfiughter; and Mr. and Mrs. Mel Goguey. Saudi Arabia Names Commander-in-Chief Cairo, Egypt U.R) Saudi Arabia today announced appoint ment of an Egyptian general as commander-in-chief of its armed forces in a move welding the military might of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria. Maj. Gen. Abdel Hakim Amer, Egypt's minister of war and commander - in - chief, becomes head' of the joint Egyptian- Saudi Arabian armed forces un der the two nations' new Mutual Defense Pact. The appointment was an nounced from Riviyadh, royal capital of Saudi Arabia. Amer already is commander-in-chief of Egyptian - Syrian armed forces under a similar agreement signed in answer to the Gaghdad Pact. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria and chief Arab opponents of the pro-western Baghdad alliance. East Germany, Red China Signs Treaty Tokyo U.R) Peiping Radio announced today that Commu nist East Germany and Red China had signed a treaty of friendship. The two Communist nations is sued a joint communique attack ing what they called the United States' "bankrupt policy of strength." The treaty was signed by Com munist Chinese Premier Chou En lai and East German Prime Minister Otto Grotewohl. Their statement called for the "libera tion" of Formosa .and a United Nations seat for Peiping. More than 60 per cent of the rural roads in the United States are hardsurfaced. ENTERING HONG KONG, Dr. and Mrs. Homer Bradshaw, veteran American missionaries, are in need of assistance after four years imprisonment in Red China. (International) Norblad Agrees On No Tax Cuts Washington (U.R) Rep. Clarence Cannon (D-Mo.), chair man of the powerful House Ap propriations committee, has join ed a growing list of congression al leaders who see little chance of a tax cut next year. Cannon said in an interview that there "positively" must be no tax cut unless the budget is balanced. He said it would be fiscal "suicide" to reduce taxes before there is a budget surplus. Another congressman, Rep. Walter Norblad (R-Ore.), agreed. He said in a statement that not only should the budget be bal anced Taut substantial payments should also be made on the na tional debt before a tax reduc tion is considered. "If in this time of record em ployment and general prosperity we can't start making the very necessary payments on our huge national debt," Norblad said. "I don't know, when we ever will." Oregon Highway Situation Listed Portland (U.R) Here is a run down on the highway travel situation in Oregon today: Highway 101 Closed north and south of Coquille. Highway 99 Closed at Walk er,, three miles north of Cottage Grove; open by convoy only eight miles north of Roseburg; closed at Myrtle Creek by high water and slides. Highway 42 Closed by high water and slides. Highway 38 Closed by slides between Reedsport and Drain. .Highway- 36 Open for one way traffic between Eugene and Florence. State police reported all other major routes were open to traf fic, although it was snowing in the mountains and chains were advised for motorists traveling those roads. You'll want to order every design in it! 7036 I MDMaMMM Notre Dame Bomb , Plot Suspect Held Paris (U.R) Police arrested today the "maniac" who planted a time bomb in the famous bacre Coeur (Sacred Heart) Basilica on Christmas and threatened to blow up Notre Dame Cathedral. ' Police said he confessed. Officers identified the man as Daniel Havas, a 45-year-old bak ery worker. They said they discovered "proof" while searching his home that he was the person sought. He was taken to a police station for further questioning late in the day. He apparently was the older of two men hunted by police in connection with a Christmas bomb plot. Elizabeth Calls for Peace To Benefit All Sandringham, England (U.R) Queen Elizabeth II called on the world in her annual Christmas broadcast to live in peace "for the beneft of all." The Queen said that year by year "secrets of immense power for good or evil" are being re vealed but "we have still to solve the problem of living peaceably together as - people and as nations." MRS. PETERSON DIES Iowa City (U.R) Anna C. Peterson, 86, mother of United Press sports editor, Leo H. Peter sen, died yesterday after a three months illness. Tear Gas Chases Dancers at Gaston Gaston (U.R) Police today 1 were looking for the person who set off an Army-type tear gas grenade, f o r c i n g some 200 Christmas dancers to evacuate the Gaston community hsll. Police Chief Robert T. Wiss said the grenade was exploded in a rest room. He said the gas quickly spread throughout the entire building.
