Norblad Agrees
On No Tax Cuts
Washington (U.R) Rep.
Clarence Cannon (D-Mo.), chair
man of the powerful House Ap
propriations committee, has join
ed a growing list of congression
al leaders who see little chance
of a tax cut next year.
Cannon said in an interview
that there "positively" must be
no tax cut unless the budget is
balanced. He said it would be
fiscal "suicide" to reduce taxes
before there is a budget surplus.
Another congressman, Rep.
Walter Norblad (R-Ore.), agreed.
He said in a statement that not
only should the budget be bal
anced Taut substantial payments
should also be made on the na
tional debt before a tax reduc
tion is considered.
"If in this time of record em
ployment and general prosperity
we can't start making the very
necessary payments on our huge
national debt," Norblad said. "I
don't know, when we ever will."
