S-Sgt. Raymond Doyle, New Bedford, Mass., was suspended by one leather strap from a huge I C124 transport for 45 minutes. Barksdale officials said they were recommending him for the Distinguished Flying Cross. " , The plane was coming in for a landing last Wednesday with 14 men aooara wnen one oi ine landine eears failed to lock in place. Doyle bound a loading strap around his ankles and was low ered into the 165-mile-an-hour slin stream. Some wonder if they will become depressed o r lose their mind. If they have always been sane and have never had a tenden cy to great moodiness, or depression, or u uiey nave never nad depres sions with each menstrual peri- I od, and if they have good rela- j tives, none of whom have ever , been depressed, they are not likely to have trouble with the menopause. Every woman should remem ber that if she is mentally sound, she should go through the meno pause without much trouble. Some women just stop menstuat ing and that's all there is to it. Others, for a while, have flushes. Several times a day the woman will find herself feeling very warm. She may want to fan her self, or go to a window. She may suddenly perspire profusely, per haps in some spot such as the front of the arms. In the worst cases she will wake out of sleep, feeling so warm that she will jump out of bed. If a woman has always had good strong nerves she may have these symptoms for only a few months, but if she has always been sensitive and nervous and very responsive to stimuli, she may go on having flushes for ten years or more. Then a good thing to remember is that millions of women have been through this sort of thing and have come out the other side perfectly normal. Some women who have al ways had a tendency to sadness may get depressed at this time; only a few get so depressed that they cannot work and have to have electroshock treatments. Some just become unhappy. They feel that life for them has in a way come to an end, and nobody needs them; their children do not need them and their husband, they think, does not need them. They want to join the "Nobody- j loves-me-Club." Such women need to make an effort to stay social, and to cultivate their friends as they never did before. Many women fear that at the menopause they will get fat and unattractive and will get some hair on their chin. None of this is necessary. If a woman gets fat at the menopause it is because she eats much more than she needs, and then stores the ex cess food as fat. If she starts gaining weight, she should limit her diet largely to some meat or chicken or fish, plus plenty of vegetables, salads, and a little fruit. She should avoid fats and sugars and foods made with much butter and sugar and cream. Many a woman wonders if at the menopause she will lose her husband's love. Again, every thing depends on the mental point of view. If a woman was affectionate and sexually attrac tive before the menopause, she can remain the same way for 20 years afterwards. She may please her husband as much as she ever did. Natur ally, some women who never were very affectionate, use the menopause as an excuse for call ing an end to their sexual life. The next question is, "What can be done for the menopause?" If the flushes are mild or there are no symptoms, the woman needs no medicine. If she is hav ing severe flushes her doctor can prescribe an estrogen, which can be given as a small pill once a day. The big thing is not to take so big a dose as to make the breasts sore or to cause spot- tine or menstruation again. If the woman spots, the doctor will j feel that she had better be cur retted to make sure that there is no cancer present. In most such cases the abnormality in bleeding is due purely to the menopause, but in each case the attending physician must make the decision as to what is best to do. Some women stop men- struating suddenly, while others go on irregularly for a year or two. Many physicians refuse to give estrogens, such as stop the flushes, because they remember a paper published years ago which indicated that in mice, enormous doses of estrogen can produce cancer. Today, the best . evidence indicates that the tiny doses of estrogen, such as are needed to stop flushes, will not produce cancer, in 20 years or more of using these drugs. I j haven't seen any case in which jl thought cancer had been so produced. The effect of the dosage by mouth is more even. Many women want to know how soon after the menopause they can stop worrying about becoming pregnant. This is a question hard to answer because, in very rare cases, women have become pregnant after the age of 48 or so. Usually, in America, the menopause comes at about the age of 50. The chances 'of becoming pregnant after men struation stops is exceedingly small; it is small after the age of 45. An argument against child- bearing after 43 is that the child is more than ordinarily likely to be abnormal mentally.
