t SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE t Thursday, December 22, 1953 o uotes From the News O By UNITED PRESS Paris Pierre Poujade, right wing extremist whose followers recently concluded a "gentleman's agreement" with the Commu nists, on his anti-tax movement: "We hatn shown the government that our refusal to pay taxes, although illegal, is honest." New York Life magazine on its special, unprecedented 120 page Christmas issue devoted solely to the Christian church: Q "Religion in America today commands the attention and energies ofOthe population as it has not since the days of the country's first devout settlers." j ! Chicago The National Safety Council on its estimate that i 560 persons will lose their lives during the four-day Christmas j holiday. o "The best gift of all would be a Christmas holiday without traffic tragedy." Q Buenos Aires, Argentina J5r. Alberto Gainza Paz on taking formal possession of the newspaper La Prensa from Dr. Manuel Ordonez, who was imprisoned by the Peron government for three j months Ihis-Vear: ! 'I hope you have the key. Otherwise you will be like a bride "groom without the wedding ring." Goshen, Ind. Washington Presidential Press Secretary James O. Hagerty on the announcement that President Eisenhower was expected lo resume news conferences with the capital press corps next month: "We have no intention of going back to written questions." On The Side By E. V. Durling (Distributed by King Faura Syndicate. Inc.) One of the greateslquartets I have ever heard is that from Am- arillo. Tex., winners of this year's barber shop quartet sing ing championship. I am a quar tet fan from far back. I remem- berO'The Empire City Four. Also, the group billed as "That Quartet" aniS vit four stout fel lows whos sloa vat "A Thou sand Pounds cS Jfirmony." My favorite quartet Hymber is that song title "Deari." I never cared much for either "Set Adeline" or "Down by the Old Mill Stream" as quartet numbers. Both seemed to inspire quartets to excessive and corny heights of harmony. They HA not bring about that easy tmd jreceful de livery which i iAt jfrett charm of quartet sinjiEf. Please Not The belief tfctt country boys are generally i better physi cal shape thin eity boyi is a fallacy. The0rcord of World War II reveal that in the United States the percentage of country boys rejected for military service because of not measuring up to physical standards was much higher than that of city boys. Bridegrooms Did yoixhave "wedding cer emony jitters"? Many British bridegrooms are reported to be taking so-called "confidence sills" to calm their nerves dur ing the cheremony. No mention is mada of brides taking such pills. It is the same the whole world over. The bridgegroom gets the jitterg as he tpproaches the altar but the bride "is always cab, cooL collected nd trium phant. Asking Queries from clients. Q. In what show did Betty Grable make her Broadway stage bow? A. "Du Barry Was a Lady." . . . Q. Wasn't there a baseball song titled, " When Wingo Does the Tango on the Congo"? A. Yes, sir. It was inspired by Ivy Wingo, (Jreat.catcher for the Cincinnati Reds. Horses and Women A prominent Hollywoodian is reported to be "consulting a psychiatrist about his marriage." O His wife is a redhead. So his ma trimonial difficulties are not sur prising. This tragic happening in spires me to urge all. our subs cribers with flaming tressed wives to give careful considera tion to the helpful hints on handling red-haired women fre quently offered by our Horses and Women experts. Heart Condition At 41, E. R. Bradley, then a re tail store salesman in Chicago, was informed by his physician that he had a serious heart condi tion and would have to slow down considerably if he wished to live much longer. Bradley switched from the retail store field to thoroughbred racing and operating gambling casinos. The change does not appear as if it would benefit a serious heart condition. However, Col. E. R. fEradley lived to be 87 years old and left an estate of $7,000,000. Incidentally those millions were made after Bradley was 41 and afflicted with the aforemen tioned heart condition. Sidelights Over the entrance to the Bird- land Dance Hall on Broadway, Manhattan, is inscribed the fol lowing: "Through These Portals Pass the Most Mortals." . . . Chicagoan says that not until her fifth marriage did she .have her first baby. Sounds like some kind of a record. Passing By Eleanor Holm. One of the in numerable beauties from Brook lyn who have achieved world wide fame. Eleanor, the daughter of a Brooklyn fire chief, held 19 swimming records. She is of Irish descent. Lipstick If a young woman has a thick ! coat of lipstick applied it in-. dicates she doesn't want to be kissed. If her lipstick has been lightly applied it is a sign she is in the mood for a little loving and kissing. Or so says a New Yorker who says he has made a studv of the lipstick situation. Our Horese and Women experts have been instructed to thor oughly check this interesting claim.
