Last year, Major John and his family were at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Christmas at the White House should be a wide-eyed time for lucky David, 7, Barbara Anne, 6, and Susan, 3- There will be a small tree upstairs, just out side Mrs. Eisenhower's bedroom in the big hall which is called the private living room, and the usual towering evergreen down stairs decorated with tons of tin sel. A Red Dress? Mrs.-Eisenhower, who finish ed most of her Christmas shop ing before Thanksgiving, sup ervises the trimming of the fam ily tree by White House decor ators who also trim the one in the public downstairs. There's a good chance Mrs. Eisenhower on Christmas day will wear a dress right in keep ing with the holiday and also in her husband's favorite color red. Last year when the White House social season was in full swing, the judicial reception came closest to Christmas. Mrs. Eisenhower caused "oh's" and ".ah's" when she came sweeping down the stairs on her husband's arm and wearing a brilliant full- skirted red net gown. The President and Mrs. Eisen hower may open some of their gifts Christmas eve. But they planned to exchange personal gifts as usual on Christ mas morning when the grand children also will be unwrap ping gifts. Half-Tree Makes One; Do This With Mirrors New York ;U.R) Use half a Christmas tree if yours is a small living room, and still have it looking like a whole. It's done with mirrors. June Cabot, home arts con sultant for Libbey-Owens-Ford, suggested this method for de creasing the bulk of the tree. Cut off all the ,back branches and stand the tree 0against any wall space paneled with a mir ror. The tree looks full size and the mirror's reflection also ac centuates the lights, glass balls and other decorations.
