G o o O Q O In the Day's News o By FRANK JENKINS Today's best political crack: President Eisenhower is quot ed this morning as telling Re publican congressional leaders the other day that New York's Governor Averell Harriman is a "Park Avenue Truman." (Park Atfefiue is New York City's ritz iest street.) As a political phrase maker, Ike is pretty good, isn't he? TT SHOULD be added by way of explanation, I think, that Ike didn't" just cut loose without provocation. Harriman has been making snide remarks to the ef fect that the Eisenhower admin istration has coddled the rich and taken the bread out of the mouths ol-the poor and similar left-wing tripe. John Knight, of the Knight Newspapers, one of America's ablest editorial writers, sized Harriman up the other day as "a rie?i man's son who has a guilt complex because of his inher ited wealth." BOUNCING from U.S. politics to world politics (the cold war is a Communist world poli tics campaign) Soviet Premier Bulgan and Communist Party Cjief Khrushchev have just de parted from India after exchang ing "pledges of wide and friendly cooperation with India's silk stocking Premier Nehru who s purrs like a pet kitten on a pil low every time the big Commu nist bosses stroke his fur. When India is taken over by the Communists and Nehru is clapped into jail, most of us aren't going to feel as bad about it when he jumps out of a win dow as we did when Masaryk of Czechoslovakia leaped to his death after the Communists had taken over his country. rpHAT brings up the big ques--- tion: Is our military strength sufficient to deter e Commies from STARTING A WAR? On that point, let's quote two ' able and statesmanlike Democrats: SENATOR RUSSELL, of Geor gia, of the senate armed serv icescommittee: "I think the U.S. defense pro gram looks pretty good." Senator Byrd, of Virginia, also of the sgiate armed services committee: "Strategic bomber bases ring ing Siet Russia are the best deterrent to war the U.S. has. It is unlikely the Russians will launch a 3,000-mile flight against us as long as they know' our planes (from these bases) can bomb Russian cities within a few hours." Is That So? Who Am I? At the age of three to five when mv head-covering snow- whitens, I take a mate for life which may last as long as man's life. Deeply attached to our home, we rear our young until they are at least six months old. In my domain, I am undisputed even animals much larger than I respect my strength. Fe males are larger than males. Strictly American, I am sel dom seen outside the U.S. and Canada although I do have close T ET'S close with a word on cotton: At a referendum, election held yesterday, 93 per cent of the cot ton growers who went to the polls in 21 states voted to go on with the subsidy system that has stuffed the natioS's warehouses with cotton for which there is no market, that has kept the price of American cotton so high that America can no longer sell any considerable amount of cot ton for export, that has brought into the markets synthetic fibers thatare rapidly taking the place of cotton in our own domestic market. pHE cotton subsidy has to be -- accompanied by acreage con trols. As acres are taken out of cotton, they go into other crops that are competitive with crops normally grown in non-cotton areas such as Southern Oregon and far Northern California. Then fertilizer is poured onto the remaining acres so that they , will produce as much cotton as the larger number of acres pro duced before. Restraining Order Prevents Strike Against Airline Los Angeles (U.R) A tempo rary restraining order issued by Federal Judge Peirson M. Hall prevented 850 members of the AFL Brotherhood of Railway Clerks from striking against Western Air Lines today. The order was issued yester day. The union, which has juris diction among station and cleri cal personnel and baggage load ers, had planned to go on strike at 6 a.m. today. Act Claimed Violated Western Air Lines petitioned for the restraining order on grounds a strike would be illegal because it violated provisions of the national railway labor act calling for a 30-day cooling off period. Hall did not rule on the cool ing off period but set Dec. 16 for a hearing for the union to show cause why a temporary injunction should not be issued. Negotiations between the air lines and the union began June 30. The National Mediation Board stepped into the case Aug. 8, but negotiations broke off Tuesday when the strike was ordered. The railway clerks had sought a general wage increase of $50 a month. The company offered $25 monthly wage raises over a two-year period. Western, which , operates 81 flights a day in the 12 Western states and Canada, also is nego tiating with the AFL Airline Pilots association over a pension proposal. The pilots have set no strike date. WORSE still: The Southwest West Tex- Paul Harvey, Veteran Character Actor, Dies Hollywood (U.R) Paul Har vey, veteran character actor and motion picture industry leader, died yesterday of a heart attack in his home. He was 71. Harvey is survived by his widow, Ottye; a half-sister, Mrs. Ionella Southstone of McKenzie Bridge, Ore.; and a half-brother, Hubert Robbins of Eugene, Ore. Funeral services were pending as, New Mexico, Arizona, South ern California is exhausting its ground water supplies (by pump ing) TO GROW COTTON TO BE PILED UP IN GOVERNMENT WAREHOUSES WHILE THE REST OF THE WORLD GROWS COTTON FOR USE. TOO bad, isn't it? But that's what happens under POLITICAL FARMING. Say o to the BOY or GIRL cof the Family with a . C.A. By EUGENE BURNS Ranger-Naturalist relatives throughout the north ern hemisphere. Before the white man, I was common throughout the land but today only a few live in perhaps a dozen states, mostly around Chesapeake Bay, the Great Lakes, and both coasts with the greatest concentration in Florida and Alaska. My young are arrogant and vinegary. A skyway robber, I often intimidate ospreys into surrendering fish they have caught and which I seize in mid air. My yellow eyes are ex tremely keen. My nose is aqui line. Fish, mostly dead, consti tute about 90 per cent of our diet. I stand about 35 inches tall; weigh under 12 pounds; and measure eight feet from wing tip to wing tip. My sickle-hooked talons are bright corn-yellow. Whether soaring majestically, circling up and up until I be come a speck against the blue, or power-diving at 100 miles an hour, I may scream my high pitched cry of defiance. Return To Same Nest Couples return year after year to the same nest each time ad ding a new layer of sticks and lining the nest with soft grasses, mosses and feathers. In time it may be more than eight feet across and 12 feet high and weigh a ton. In this nest, the fe male lays two or three compara tively small white ,eggs which both parents incubate, one bird sitting as long as 72 hours. The eyrie always commands a mag nificent view. Eggs hatch in 35 days. During the two months' nest feeding, young are fed two to eight times daily. The solo flight from the towering treetop taken in the 12th week, perhaps may be a mile long. Many silly legends have grown up around me: that I car ry away babies to say nothing of fawns, lambs, foxes and such. Actually, my carrying limit is around IVz pounds. I am: A. Condor; B. Fish Kawk; C. Merganser; D. Bald Eagle; E. Wild Turkey. I am: A. A bald eagle the word bald is a pioneer word it meant white. You'll find me on every dollar bill.
