Ben son announced today that U-S surplus wheat and corn will be made available immediately to charitable agencies for distri bution to the hungry overseas. Stocks of dried beans and rice also will be released for foreign relief. (oThe action was a major vic tory for Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish leaders who had ap pealed jQintly to Benson for re lease of surplus grains for over seas relief. Law Interpretation Hit The religious leaders made the appeal in a meeting with Benson last month. They argued that the Agriculture Depart ment had placed too narrow an interpretation on a law enacted by Congress last year. It auth orizes free allocations of surplus farm products to voluntary re lief agencies tor distribution to the needy abroad. Previously, the- department had released only farm products which were in danger of spoil ing in storage, mainly dairy products and cottonseed oil. And it had served notice that the av ailability of dairy products for relief agencies would be sharply curtailed next year because sur plus stocks were dwindling. From Government Stocks The foods will come from the government's stock of more than $7,700,000,000 worth of (jurplus farm products. The foods will be distributed Treasury Film Shown To Rolary Club "America the Beautiful," a technicolor film produced for the Treasury Department show ing cities, industries and scenic attractions of the United States, was shown at the luncheon meet ing of the Medford Rotary club Tuesday at the Medford hotel. Morris B. Leonard Sr., chair man of the U. S. savings bond program in Jackson county, in troduced the film with remarks concerning the current savings bond campaign here, pointing out that Jackson county is a leader in E and H bond sales in Oregon on a per capita basis. Approximately- $150 was raised at Tuesday's meeting to swell the fund now being raised to send the Medford high school band to the East-West Shrine football game at San Francisco, Dec. 31. L. C. Taylor and James Dunlevy were in charge of this phase of the meeting. The Med ford Rotary club will also join ftp. the effort of local service 'Clubs to raise Christmas funds for the Salvation Army. to 67 foreign countries on all continents. Besides supplying the com modities, the Agriculture De partment will pay for packing, transportation to shipside, hand ling and other charges. The International Cooperation admi istration will pay for oc ean transportation from a fund of $9,500,000 allocated for that purpose. United Press Promotes Oregon's Richard Litfin New York (U.R) Fred J. Green today was appointed as sistant general business manag O er of United Press. Succeeding Green as Pacific Division manager, with head quarters in San Francisco, is rvRichard A. Litfin, division bus iness manager for the past 15 mcvaths. Ltfin is from The Dal les, Ore. The appointments were made by Frank H. Bartholomew, president. Cify Planners Call Hearings on Zone Change Requests The planning commission called for two public hearings on zone change requests at its meeting last night.- One hearing is in the recently annexed Laurelhurst addition, where, the commission recom mended that the area west of Mary st. and north to the north city limits be rezoned to class 3B commercial to conform with businesses already established. The remainder of the area would be rezoned to class IB two-family residential. The area was annexed as single family resi dential. The other hearing is on change of zone request from the First Church of Christ, Scientist, for property recently annexed in Siskiyou Heights extension at Woodlawn and Richmond aves. Both hearings will be held at the Jan. 9 meeting. Recommend Change The commission recommend ed to the council that property owned by Marrs R. Gibbons at McAndrews rd. and Clark st. be changed from two-family resi dential to heavy industrial. Commission members pointed out during a public hearing that property just to the east is heavy industrial. Several residents ap peared objecting to the change, saying property values would decrease. The commission voted against amending existing zoning ordin ances to include trailer courts in commercial zones and recom mending a request that lots on Boardman st. be rezoned to light industrial, on the basis of spot zoning, be denied. Porllander Arraigned On Narcotics Charges Portland (U.R) A 50-vear- old Portland man was scheduled to be arraigned today before U. S. Commissioner Robert Leady on a charge of possession and sale of narcotics. Chin Hing Fun, alias Bill Chin, was arrested here last night bv U. S. narcotics aeent Jack Merrill. Also arrested was Imogene Terry Lewis, 34, wife of a San Diego, Calif., sailor recently con victed by the Navy for smug gling narcotics into this country from Mexico. Merrill said there was no connection between the raid and the Navy court-martial.
